We Tried To Move Up From 23

The media missed a bit on Ragnow over the course of draft season. Clearly the NFL were enamoured by him. What a great iOL class this year. Hernandez and Daniels still on the board. It does suggest that Wynn might be pencilled in as a Mason replacement.

We needed to go ahead of CIN for Ragnow. Almost everyone had Ragnow in CIN. We couldn't get it done. DET might have been a target for a trade. They decided to pull the trigger on Ragnow for themselves.

Report: The Lions beat 2 teams, including the Patriots, to Frank Ragnow
First these rumors are specious at best. Second there is no way anyone spreading that rumor would know who the patriots would take if they did.
Third the patriots planting that rumor to make Matty p and Quinn look good in a pick that people questioned seems pretty likely.

You really think Belichick is that magnanimous?

To float a rumor like that, why not.
B.B. is extremely loyal and magnanimous toward people who worked for him that he respects.

I am NOT a conspiracy theorist. IMHO, we needed OL help. Many agreed. This was an excellent draft at IOL, with 2 top OT's.

Mayock had us drafting an OT and an IOL. Ragnow was rated highly. Perhaps the patriots had no interest. That seems unlikely. CIN was pegged to draft Ragnow, so someone needed to move ahead to draft him.

Belichick did indeed draft an OL at 23.

Conspiracy theory aside, this should NOT have been a surprise.

Trade up for a center? Would have been an awful move

Do you seriously not understand how much of an impact an elite center can have on an offense? Give us one for the SuperBowl and that lucky turnover the Eagles got to ice the game probably never happens. And we all know Brady cramming that ball right down their throats and into the endzone to win the game was an inevitability save for a flukey turnover.

Completely agree. Just look what Alex Mack did for Atlanta. I only wish the Pats had a lineman or two with a nasty attitude. Miss guys like Logan Mankins... played with fire...

We appear to be stockpiling Offensive Lineman. This can extend Tom Brady's career OR if he retires in a year or two they will benefit the new QB as well.

Surprised B.B. had his eyes set solely on OL with that first pick. I knew immediately when Tenn traded up they wanted to get Evans before we did.
Yep.

And as soon as Rashaan Evans' name was announced, Bill should have IMMEDIATELY started making phone calls to move Down, EXACTLY as he should have done with the 31st pick.

But we're talking Little Billy Napoleon here, who also thought that throwing away a 4th-rounder simply to move up 7 damn spots to draft a slow dwarf ahead of Justin Reid (or Sam Hubbard...or at least a half-dozen others...) was a good idea.

As he kept falling, I was hoping for a trade-up to get Derwin James. Like our top 2 picks. But, James might be a difference maker on D

If rumors are true, I'm glad the trade up didn't go through. I predict Wynn is the superior talent .

It’ll be interesting to see if Wynn can even be better than Solder. Solder was great but did struggle against the superior rushers in the league at times like Von Miller, etc.

“Slow dwarf”....is that you, Ron??
To paraphrase Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam....I’ve never encountered a man in more dire need of a blowj*b.

Fellowship of the Miserable.

Good post.

Makes you wonder: if they wanted Ragnow so bad, maybe they really do want Wynn to play inside after all?
