Unofficial 1st 2019 regular season game thread: Slackers vs. Gummy Bears

He didn’t look anywhere near that pathetic last season. Maybe some of that was the Packers’ investment in the defensive side of the ball paying off, maybe it’s game plan related (the Packers emphasized contain up front and he had a spy on him almost all night), and maybe some of it is rust because most of the NFL didn’t bother playing their starters for the preseason. The point is, what a team looks like in Week 1 is not indicative of what it will look like later in the year.

People are saying this morning that the Packers did a great job containing all the weapons the Bears have. I’m not sure where they are seeing weapons on offense, aside from Allen Robinson. Now, all that being said, Trubisky was absolutely staring him down all night. On what was the game-sealing INT, all the safety did was read his eyes. He needs to break that habit or it will be a long season.

Definitely agreed with that weapons point about the bears. I was about to point that out myself. I don’t really think much of trubisky, who did progress in year 2, or the Bears weapons. Trey burton can’t be relied to stay on the field. Allen Robinson is a nice player but does he really intimidate defenses? I don’t really see him as a take the top off the defense guy that can do other things like the other elite receivers do.

Their ground game is going to struggle as well (at least out of the gates) because defenses are going to load the box until Trubisky proves that he can beat them from the pocket.

Burton will help, but the problem that Trubisky will face this season will be defended that don’t like him run or get outside the pocket. He’ll have to win from the pocket and the jury is still out on whether he can do that or not.

The Bears are not going to be world-beaters on offense. However, with that defense, they can win the Super Bowl if Trubisky doesn't make mistakes and does just enough to win games. We've seen this formula in the past. With Nagy, I don't feel they can do it though. If they had an offensive guru like McD, then yes.

I am going to check the first quarter maybe but I am not going to watch too much beyond that. Obviously I want the Bears to win and Rodgers to have a bad game. Mostly because i hate the way he plays. If you're not focused entirely on winning when you play (either due to selfish reasons, professionalism or pure drive to be the best) i find it hard to root for you.

I actually like Revis more than Rodgers. Give me a mercenary who will do his best to try to get the most money he can over a guy who is worried and taking a chance or sack cause of his stat line any day.
I turned it off after Collinsworth jizzed over Rodgers throwing it up for grabs in the end zone and the soft TE Graham came down with it somehow. He is the luckiest QB in the history of the NFL. Both teams suck, but we are in year 10 of the NFL shoving Greenbay and Rodgers down our throats.

Awkward...

Went back to look at the 2017 draft where Trubisky, Mahomes, and Watson were drafted. Mahomes was drafted #10. Of the nine teams who drafted before them, 6 of the teams have subsequently fired a coach and/or GM.

1. CLE – Took Myles Garrett. GM Sashi Brown fired later that year.
2. CHI – Took Mitchell Trubisky. Coach John Fox fired after that season
3. SF – Took Solomon Thomas. BUST. Had committed to Garrapolo. No changes (new regime).
4. JAX – Took Leonard Fournette. BUST. No changes.
5. TEN – Took Corey Davis. BUST. Coach John Fox fired after that season.
6. NYJ – Took Jamal Adams. Coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike MacCagnan fired after 2018 season
7. LAC – Took Mike Williams. BUST. No changes.
8. CAR – Christian McCaffery. GM Dave Gettlemen fired after that season.
9. CIN – John Ross. BUST. Coach Marvin Lewis fired after 2018 season.
10. KC – Patrick Mahomes
The only players on this list that are real bust are Thomas & Ross imo. Ross definitely leaning that way but he's had a few injuries.
Davis has been in an anemic offense.
LF7 is exactly who he is supposed to be. He was drafted way too high not his fault.
Williams is not close to a bust.
Gettleman sux.

Believe it or not but there were many that didnt have Mahomes as QB1 or even in the top 5, a few not in top 10 that year.

(Fwiw I had Mahomes at 8.33, Trubisky 8.20 & Watson 8.10) All 2nd Rd (no points for positional value which for QB I probably should?)

Honestly part of me is glad this game happened. Anyone who thinks the Bears have a real shot to win needed this wake up call (including me). They suck on offense. Their QB is okay at times but he will never be consistent enough. As long as you don't turn it over against them they can hold you to 10 points and you still have a good chance to win.

And this game in no way should make anyone a believer in GB. The NFC is disappointing. A lot of very questionable teams that have fatal flaws along with some dark horses who have yet to prove they belong in the conversation. I can't pick one team that i feel is a true contender in the NFC.

Say when you will about the Pats easily schedule but at least they will need to get by KC. They are a for sure threat to win it all unlike any of these NFC teams.

So true, yet you'd never know it if you looked at the prime time tv schedule. Once again it's dominated by NFC games.

Casual fans: "We don't want a low scoring game like the Super Bowl"
The devil: "Deal."

Interesting. Maybe it is because I watched the 40min cutup of the game and not the full game but my initial reaction was not as nice to him as yours. There were still a lot of open players he missed, players he stared down and throws where the ball went "who the fcuk knows where".

Maybe it all looked a bit better given 2-3 additional slowmo angles.

I don't care too much either way. Hopefully from the Bears POV it was an anomaly.

You're down 7-3 and you have the opportunity to kick an easy FG and go for it on 4th and 10 instead? Just dumb.

But then again maybe Lombardi is putting too much effort into it and Nagy is really just a dumbass who looked at the worst possible time at his "BE YOU." note on the call sheet.

I hope they’re trash. I’ve never seen a more mouthy bunch of weasels than the Bears fans that showed up on this forum to talk **** in 2010. Then they proceeded to get shellacked and disappeared.

Nagy later said they were not in range for their kicker. If so, why do you get a kicker who cannot kick a 50 yard FG? That is routine

Who knows what’s going on, my point was that for whatever reason Nagy must have felt that kicking wasn’t an option even in the face of the bad odds a 4th & 10 presented.

How do you take Trubisky over Deshaun Watson and Mahomes? Trubisky isnt going to get you 10 wins even with a great defense.

Their ground game is going to struggle as well (at least out of the gates) because defenses are going to load the box until Trubisky proves that he can beat them from the pocket.

The Bears are a team that should think very seriously about bringing AB in, should he get cut. And the Raiders would be fools to buy the phony remorse apology that AB gave to the team, when they can get out of that contract and just start fresh, with extra money to use next year.

If they were in an opposing stadium it's in range, at Soldier Field Week 1 after their playoffs ended on a missed FG and that was the only talk of the offseason. I can see why it wasn't considered in range. He misses the FG and Chicago might have rioted.

Different kicker. Pineiro is supposed to have a strong leg

Turning point of game....Trubisky trying to beat the 2 minute clock in 4th quarter when there was no reason in the whole wide world to do so. He hurried the play and lofted that rainbow into coverage---game over. (Instead of beating the clock, they should have been thinking--wind it down so GB wd have no time to score a field goal after the presumed Chicago td.
