This years draft haul

Jack Jones in his brief stint did what we need draft picks to do and make game changing plays. Same with Marcus as a kick returner. We don't see enough of this.

Grade is incomplete for all until the season is finished. Passing on LB Devin Lloyd so far is haunting us. However, that can change.

What a Steal Jack Jones is at least we have hope on the back end of our D. Now we need two solid guys @ LB.

The Strange pick was and will always be awful, it was a huge reach and only a position of need, because BB traded away Mason for a bag of magic beans. I don't care if he turns out to be the next John Hannah, he is NOT going to make an impact in the outcome of games (unless he really stinks).

Patriot gamechangers draft at #21 overall:

Chandler Jones
Vince Wilfork
Randy Moss
Lawrence Maroney (OK, I'll give you that one)
Daniel Graham

The 8 guys drafted last year from 21-28 almost all of them are already making significant plays with their new teams. Walker, Ilam, Johnson and Lloyd would all be starting for the Pats defense right now. Lloyd has 20 tackles and 2 INTs in 4 games!! The Pats had a chance to get an impact player at 21, instead they got role players.

Then to pass on George Pickens in round 2! Shmmesh

Right now Jack Jones looks like he could be something, the rest, meh.

The Pats are 1-3 in last place and some of you think this was a good draft????

This post is lapping the field for worst post of the thread.

“I don't care if he turns out to be the next John Hannah, he is NOT going to make an impact in the outcome of games”

It’s hard to describe how dumb this statement is.

It's too early to conclude anything either way regarding the draft however this is how I would grade the picks to date...

Cole Strange C-
Inconsistent at best. At times looks like a rookie who's not quite ready to be a starter.

Tyquan Thornton Inc.
Given his skinny frame it's a really bad sign that he got injured on the very first hard tackle he took. But hopefully soon we'll be able to see what he can contribute. I'm not sure who he's taking snaps from but they already have a receiver (Bourne) not getting enough game reps.

Marcus Jones B-
He looked great in the return game on Sunday but he's not getting any defensive snaps and I'm not sure I'm putting a 3rd round value on a return specialist. However, a few more games like Sunday and I'll be convinced.

Jack Jones B
Significant jump in playing time against the Packers, seeing 99% of defensive snaps. I don't understand what the hell he was doing on the Packers final possession in OT but it's hard to argue with a pick six against Rodgers in Lambeau.

Pierre Strong D
Not playing. Don't need him. Poor choice here.

Bailey Zappe C
A lot of people raving about his poise after being thrust into action on Sunday, and it's a fair complement overall, however he panicked a bit on his final pass of the game. That said, the play calling on that final brief possession didn't help either.

Kevin Harris F
Again, no need for a running back here. Waste of a pick.

Sam Roberts C
He's on the roster but mostly inactive. Had 1 ST snap on Sunday.

Chasen Hines C
OL depth player who hopefully won't be needed.

Andrew Stueber Inc.
Non-football injury list.

Rookies develop differently and at some point they might get injured or hit the rookie wall!

This post is a really fair and accurate assessment. I think should update it again after game 9, game 13 and game 17!

He couldn't tackle a drunk @captain stone and needs to live in the weight room but he's been very good in coverage so far. Which matters the most.

Marcus and Zappe were my favorite picks. We need to give Jones 5-10 snaps on offense the way things are going. I'm not sure I remember the last time we had someone creating for themselves.
Grade is incomplete for all until the season is finished. Passing on LB Devin Lloyd so far is haunting us. However, that can change.
Idk about this. Our DL couldn't stop a drunk @captain stone and Lloyd needs a DL to keep him clean. Not the most physical LB at all so I think it's fair to wonder if he'd be shining here.

This right here is a HUGE MISS so far! Imagine how much better this defense would look with a mobile tackling machine like Devin Lloyd.

Lloyd would have been nice to have against athletic QBs like Josh Allen, Kyler Murray, and Lamar Jackson - the guy who piled up 107 yards rushing in our loss to the Ravens!

Any draft post that includes "we could have picked this player rather than this player" is automatically disqualified from relevance. There are only a handful of picks across the entire draft every year that turn out to literally be the best player available at that time.

We keep talking about evaluating the draft without first talking about how to evaluate a draft.

Well Cole Strange who we could have had in the Second maybe Third caught the Draft world by surprise in the First Round. I was hoping for a Defensive Player based off our last game before the Draft. That said Strange is playing very good living up to his selection.

Any draft post that includes "we could have picked this player rather than this player" is automatically disqualified from relevance Because it might make BB look BAD.

Yup agreed, if you are a loyal defender of BB the last thing you want to know is the guys we should have picked instead. Because the N'Keal Harry pick looks downright awful in hindsight. NEVER criticize BB for FAILING at the draft, message received loud and clear! Let us never criticize BB for making mistakes in the draft, because remember he's infallible and has never made mistakes there!! LMAO :poop:

This is the perfect example of logical fallacy. Let's give an every day example.

Boss: Shouldn't you have done X instead of Z? We're losing money here.
Employee: Never tell me what I should have done instead. I never make mistakes!

What is logical fallacy?

A logical fallacy is a statement that seems to be true until you apply the rules of logic. Then, you realize that it's not. Logical fallacies can often be used to mislead people – to trick them into believing something they otherwise wouldn't.

Quick logic test: everyone thinks the Cole Strange pick was a reach because the head coach and GM of the Rams, whose OL is arguably the worst in the league, said it is.

Think about that for a second.

Hey, where's the fun in that! Second guessing draft picks is a time-honored sport, even if it is unfair. It may be unfair, but it is so much fun to play the omnipotent GM well after the fact. It gives douche bags like me something to yap about.

Of course there are some draft critiques that are reasonable, such as the pick of Harry when a bevy of All-pro WRs were on the board, and then there are others that are open to debate such as the pick of Strange. The pick of Harry was in a class of its own as far as bad Patriots draft choices, probably the worst they ever made (they lost the GOAT because of it).

The Strange pick seems fairly solid. Sure Devin Lloyd might have been better, but then the Patriots would not have been able to trade down and get extra picks. They got the Chiefs third and fourth with which they picked Jack Jones so I think they may have come out on top....It is an interesting discussion...

They didn't lose anyone because of the Harry Pick.
People make up their minds, that particular guy was pissed about his lack of a multi-year deal.
I'm pretty certain that is well known around here.

On Lloyd, it's too early to declare him anything. He's done really well in first 4 games. Had a pretty bad preseason.

As for Strange versus Lloyd, the comparison is actually Strange, Bailey Zappe and a 2023 3rd rounder for Lloyd.

The draft machinations were complex this year so I could be wrong on this, but it looks like the Patriots did a great job on the first round trade back. According to Wikipedia, the Patriots made this trade in the first:

No. 21: New England → Kansas City (D). New England traded its first-round selection (21st overall) to Kansas City in exchange for a first-, third-, and fourth-round selections (29th, 94th, and 121st overall). [emphasis mine]

So then in the fourth round, pick 121, the Patriots took Jack Jones. Here is what Wikipedia said:

No. 121: Miami → Kansas City → New England.

As far as KC's third round pick that the Patriots got it was traded for 4th this year and 2023 third from Carolina.

New England → Carolina (D). New England traded its third-round selection (94th overall) to Carolina in exchange for a fourth-round selection (137th overall) and a 2023 third-round selection.

The Patriots picked Zappe at 137.

So overall, the Patriots got Strange, Jack Jones, Zappe, and a 2023 third for their trade back from 21. Nice haul, even if Zappe fall flat on his face.

Strange still feels like a pick taken a round too early. I'd rather have Devin Lloyd patrolling in our linebacker group right now. Did you see how AWFUL Tavai looked when asked to tackle in space? In fact we're so desperate at linebacker that we took back a guy we cut three times in Jamie Collins! LOL.

Source?
I saw an interview with them where they said they were targeting the player, thought they had an insight into his value that the rest of the league didn't, and were hoping he'd be available with their first pick.

Project much? Wow.
If you actually did some reading before reacting, you'd see I'm anything but a loyalist to any coach or player.
Here's the logic behind the draft guessing game: the first 198 draft picks in the 2000 draft were all completely wrong. Every single team made utterly awful mistakes, multiple times, with their most valuable draft picks.

It is not Lloyd vs. Strange. This has been explained about 100 times. It is do you want Lloyd or Strange + Jack Jones + Bailey Zappe + Carolina's 2023 3rd round pick?

If you prefer Lloyd over those 4 picks you are only trolling and trying to criticize the Pats. The Pats won that draft pick 1000%. Too bad people can not be honest and have to try to bash the Pats for whatever agenda they have.

Again he is a guard! Unless you are awful, all their play is basically equal. It's the truth. Everyone says "Mankins was a "first round pick" I'm pretty sure the Pats didn't win a single SB in all the years they had Mankins. Please show me how the Pats are any better with Strange than Mason, or even Ferentz for that matter. They are 1-3 and lucky to be that. Strange will not move the needle one way or the other, you want playmakers in the first round, not working pieces.

Yes, I would! Lloyd makes the team demonstratively better, Zappe is a back up QB at best, which means if you are playing him, you've already lost. Jones could have been drafted with the third round pick they already had. And Carolina's 2023 3rd round pick will most likely be another reach.

1-3!!

BB traded Mason for NOTHING!! He shipped the 5th round pick for a 6th and 7th round pick and cut both players! Harris is back on the practice squad and Stueber is on IR.

BB Traded 21 for Strange, Jones and a 3rd round pick.

The Cardinals trade #23 for Marquis Brown and a 3rd round pick.

Which trade would you rather have?
