This years draft haul

One thing that has driven my crazy over the last 20 years are pundits and posters who claim that the Patriots are lousy in the draft, when not taking into account their draft position.
Does draft position stop us from taking Lamar Jackson over Sony Michel in 2018? How about Deebo Samuel, AJ Brown, or DK Metcalf over N'Keal Harry in 2019? Hint it doesn't because those players were all taken LATER than our own picks. It's not just about when you take the pick it's about who you choose. The Patriots have failed to make great choices over the years and the lack of talent accumulation through the draft has cost them.

BB's free agency spending spree was his biggest indictment of his own draft process. He signed not one but two tight ends at premium money showing his inability to draft tight ends over the years when it was CLEAR that Gronk was on his last legs. And how sorry would the Patriots pass rush look without Judon? It shows the Patriots have failed to draft a good pass rusher at DE. As for WR we all know the Patriots drafting in that position has been a joke.

Or how about our drought at linebacker? The Patriots were in perfect position to take rookie defensive player of the month Devin Lloyd but instead passed on him to take a guard in Cole strange. So now we have to scrape the bottom of the barrel instead and resign Jamie Collins whom we have already cut 3 or four times now? BB has done a bad job at drafting and he needs to be held accountable.

This is not a fair way to evaluate a draft unless you do it to all the other teams too. By your evaluation of how someone drafts, every player drafted before Tom Brady was a bad pick, and every pick that had a better player drafted after them makes that pick worse. It just doesn't make sense. Cole Strange is a very good pick so far, he will never win offensive player of the month. that award goes to WR, RB, and QB's typically. That doesn't make his value to the team less than Lloyd's would have been. Also, I would be really surprised if BB doesn't hold himself to a very high standard and is harder on himself than anyone else will ever be.

Plus the worst drafting years coincides with something else. Pats drafting has been better the last two years.

Thornton could make or break this draft. Pickens looked fantastic last week with a real NFL QB behind center

Why pass up on a WR who can run routes like that? Who is our chief Wr scout?

Thornton could make or break this draft. .
Utter nonsense, except for those that think that we should get 3 or 4 quality starters out of every draft.

We will likely go into next week with 4 rookies starting: LG, CB, QB and PR.

And the others are all potential contributors.

You should know by now, if we don't get 4 HOF in every draft that is a failure.
That mute button is glorious, the ignore button is a solid 2nd.
Who cares? Just mute and move on.

Agree. And I am actually okay with continuing to draft only guys named Jones. The methodology appears to be sound given the outcomes to date :D

Actually, one of those Jones picks better step it up. I mean, as soon as he can.
The only problem with all these Joneses is who is who, the old numbering system was a better indicator, but at least give a fan a break and put their first initial on their jerseys....

On paper this does look like it has the potential to be a solid class but we have seen a couple guys start off hot and fizzle out like Winovich and Sony. Even still I like the promise that this group shows. Although I am still not thrilled with a guard in the first round at least Strange looks to be a good one. Tyquan flashed in camp and preseason and hopefully can stay healthy. Marcus Jones looks like he could add a spark as a returner and Jack looks to be a corner who can develop if he starts to tackle better. If Zappe ends up as a capable backup that would round out a really good class if the guys I mentioned all progress.

Show me Zappe winning us a game first. He'll likely get his shot to start against Detroit with Mac out and Hoyer likely having suffered a concussion.
He came in as a reliever, so he hasn't even had the opportunity to do so.

That's why we decided to have a Jonathan Jones and a Jack Jones :D

???

Every team in the league misses on future all-pros each and every year.

Picking at the end of the draft means you're not getting those guys in the top 15 who are frequently the transformative players, the locks.

When the last 2 coaching staffs with the Patriots have picked that high, they've taken: Willie McGinest, Terry Glenn, Richard Seymour, Jerod Mayo.

Sure, you can find players as good as McGinest, Glenn, Seymour and Mayo in later rounds. If you're lucky.

The jury is still out on the Thornton versus Pickens. Clearly Thornton can fly and he can get open, but is he durable enough for the NFL? We do not know yet. That being said, Pickens looks really, really good, but I have to wonder if his personality was too "strong" for BB to pick.

All stars at every position and starters in waiting at every back up. That's the standard - especially with past history as a crutch to lean on.

All one has to do is gamble, just once, with their own money across multiple different game of chance to demonstrate the number of variables inherent in predicting any future outcome with the house coming out on top in all but the lowest percentage of random cases to show that there is much less science than guesswork in those outcomes.

The NFL is Draft is no different. You can put yourself in great position, but likelihood of negative rather than positive outcome remains the statistical certainty across all teams and there is no arguing that, but people will anyway.

I don’t think it’s poor scouting.

I will take a guess here and credit Matt Groh to some extent for the last two drafts. I suspect Bill listens to him because he worked his way up even though he was a lawyer and Al Groh’s son. Al Groh coached with or under BB four times.

It's also very convenient for the argument that the Patriots passed on the huge amount of talent that year to leave out some of the WRs taken before Mecalf. It's not only that Harry was a bust.

But also Mecole Hardman, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Parris Campbell, and Andy Isabella were all taken before Metcalf.

The Strange pick was and will always be awful, it was a huge reach and only a position of need, because BB traded away Mason for a bag of magic beans. I don't care if he turns out to be the next John Hannah, he is NOT going to make an impact in the outcome of games (unless he really stinks).

Patriot gamechangers draft at #21 overall:

Chandler Jones
Vince Wilfork
Randy Moss
Lawrence Maroney (OK, I'll give you that one)
Daniel Graham

The 8 guys drafted last year from 21-28 almost all of them are already making significant plays with their new teams. Walker, Ilam, Johnson and Lloyd would all be starting for the Pats defense right now. Lloyd has 20 tackles and 2 INTs in 4 games!! The Pats had a chance to get an impact player at 21, instead they got role players.

Then to pass on George Pickens in round 2! Shmmesh

Right now Jack Jones looks like he could be something, the rest, meh.

The Pats are 1-3 in last place and some of you think this was a good draft????

During the glory days the Pats fell into the trap of drafting for high potential vs. collecting solid talent. Dominique Easley and Rasi Dowling are the poster children from that era. The team has gotten back to fundamentals that last few drafts and the results are obvious. Some of this coincides with Caserio moving to Texas.
