The Tom Brady rumor thread

Does anyone else think it actually might be sort of more interesting and/or fun to see Brady go to Tampa Bay and the Pats go with someone else and just see what happens? Maybe it’s just the coronavirus talking.
My money is still on Vegas and I don't care what Chucky says about how much he likes Carr.

Seems like Bill is punting on next season only to build stronger team in 2021 and beyond...
IMO, if he was punting on next season he would not be signing long time vets like the McCourty Bros and Slater, he'd be in a Dolphins like tear it all down mode.

I think BB is doing the BB thing: looking at player value the way an economics major would. He's told TB12 what he thinks he is worth, which is less than his 2019 salary. TB12 is non-plussed by this, who wouldn't be? BB's the leopard who can't change his spots. He lets them go a year early rather than a year late, he'd rather have a team full of middle class players rather than stars and scrubs.

I think BB is evaluating things on a pure value basis and I don't think TB12 is representing good value for money right now. I think BB would be low-balling TB12 regardless of how he feels about Stidham, Mariota, et al. In his mind I'm sure he feels he'll find somebody that represents better value.

Basically, the ball is in TB12's corner, but it's not looking good for him returning to NE. Someone will offer him a much better deal, and he'll take it.

That doesn't bother me too much, I've been interested to see what a post-TB12 Patriots squad looks like going back to the JG days.

Well said.

The offer BB made Tom (1yr and < $23m) is predicated on 3 things and 3 things only.

1. His evaluation of Tom the player
2. The competition/market for his services (which at this time BB will not bid against himself)
3. Financial flexibility (now and in the future) of the NEP

If TB or LV see #1 differently than BB, he won't change his analysis because of it nor should he.

We know how BB handles #2. There may be some wiggle room but #1 and #3 determine #2

If TB or LA have more than NE for #3, he can't do more.

I'm stating the obvious here but thats really all there is to it.

Tom needs to create a better market for himself. Period.

i think pats are not going to make any offer to brady and let him go. franchising thuney seems like they want to surround stidham and roll with him

Cap was $~19.5m Pats just Franchised Thuney @ ~$14+m
That leaves ~$5m. Not gonna sign Brady without other player extensions or cuts to drop cap.

i bet around noon EST, we will hear numbers from buccaners.. all this tampering period is BS. its already happened.

With tagging Thuney, Brady gone! The Brady era is over! Lets see what Stidham can do!

A lot can happen. We could trade thuney, sign him long term, and like you said extend/cut players to change the current cap situation.

I never thought we would end up here with brady but here we are . Damn !

you have to remeber that by signing Brady the Pats instantly save 6.5 million in cap space, then you can give him a large signing bonus, spread it out and his cap is still manageable.

I thought it was 19.5 without the DMac extension? Does anyone know?

You are correct. DMac money not yet published. hopefully saves some 2020 cap. TBD.

The $19.5 figure had $6.5m allocated to Brady. Not saved when/if he signs.

So, TB12 can now 'officially' listen to other team's offers.

Most of the pundits said if this happened, he was gone.

It's interesting to see on Twitter how so many of them want to keep the story alive and say the Pats are still in the game.
