IMO, if he was punting on next season he would not be signing long time vets like the McCourty Bros and Slater, he'd be in a Dolphins like tear it all down mode.
I think BB is doing the BB thing: looking at player value the way an economics major would. He's told TB12 what he thinks he is worth, which is less than his 2019 salary. TB12 is non-plussed by this, who wouldn't be? BB's the leopard who can't change his spots. He lets them go a year early rather than a year late, he'd rather have a team full of middle class players rather than stars and scrubs.
I think BB is evaluating things on a pure value basis and I don't think TB12 is representing good value for money right now. I think BB would be low-balling TB12 regardless of how he feels about Stidham, Mariota, et al. In his mind I'm sure he feels he'll find somebody that represents better value.
Basically, the ball is in TB12's corner, but it's not looking good for him returning to NE. Someone will offer him a much better deal, and he'll take it.
That doesn't bother me too much, I've been interested to see what a post-TB12 Patriots squad looks like going back to the JG days.
