The talk about Martellus Bennett

Gronk is injury prone..it is what it is. If he goes down for a few..we need a good TE in this O...Bennett can be that guy and to me that $5 mill is worth it. After this year he is a FA so unless he has a fantastic year and turns it around he may stay. But who knows.

Like Foster..he better stay

Who knows. I watched him for three days in camp and he seemed fully invested. Perhaps he's coasting a bit since then...

Paul Perillo of Patriots Football Weekly on CSN went into some detail about Bennett's questionable work ethic and commitment to football.
Paul Perillo admits that not only does he not know the difference between an X and a Y receiver, he admitted he doesn't even care. There's literally millions of people that would jump at the opportunity to do his job, yet this guy doesn't even care to learn some of the fundamentals of the sport he covers. I have yet to see him add an real insight when talking about the Pats or about football, and what he reports means less than nothing to me. People should take anything he says with a huge grain of salt.

Perillo? Paul Perillo? Come on. You may have just as well cited a poster on here. Because that's what Perillo is nothing more than a Pats fan that lucked into a job covering the Pats for the Pats.

I mean this is a guy that works for the Pats yet has never broken one story regarding the team
Perillo can be a good source. He does offer occasional insider observations that don't necessarily follow the Pats' party line, including this latest bit about Bennett.

You mean like smart veterans who know they're on a team?

Gronk seemed invisible.
But Gronk is special and Bennet isn't

I don't think we need to cut Bennet any slack but we certainly can cut Gronk a lot of it

He's a big social media guy..he just wrote a book. So football just may be #2 for him after all of that. Seems really close with his kids and family. But i still think he can add a ton of value to this team..especially given Dola and Jules always seems to miss at least 3-4 games a year

Bennett's body of work is very impressive.

Again, go back to the Saints game (game 1).

That's the guy we want. if they cut him/trade him they're a significantly weaker team, unless they get a ton in return (OT?).

This is sports-talk-hype and rank speculation. Some vets coast a bit in preseason, many don't even play.

I didn't say I don't want him, I said Gronk deserves a heck of a lot more respect than Bennet as far as cutting slack goes

He's Gronk and Bennet is not

Honestly, Bennet should have played like a man fighting for a spot. It's not like his track record is special

You're right. He blows.

Some people - too eagerly awaiting this years surprise from BB - are suggesting Bennett is not going to work in NE citing his poor presentations in the last preseason games and possible unfit charachter with Brady. They suggest he might be a surprise cut/trade.

First let me say I really dont want this to happen. Its true that he didn't look good on the field lately, mostly he visibly lacked motivation, even with TB in command the other night. This are the things that could irritate BB and especially TB but its only a preseason and they brought Bennett for the SB run.
I believe he will be what we hope for with Gronk when it starts for real. Most of all I am looking forward to Bennett-Gronk snaps when TB returns.

But just for the sake of discussion what would letting Bennett go mean for the team:

-- they would keep Harbor together with Derby and Gronk and that is still a very good group. Derby really knows how to get opened and with Gronk in the mix he would be a serious threat. But if Gronk gets injured then this is not a solid let alone dominant position anymore and thats where having Bennett (in his normal form) could be crucial. Keeping Harbor (which they might anyway) would help the run.

-- they could probably get a decent trade out of Bennett and save over $5M. But what trade could possibly make this team (losing Bennett) better? I guess only starting OT would fit into this category ... what I don't know is if there is a team out there willing to part from their starting OT for a top 10 TE one week before the start of the season.

So I hope for no surprise at this front in the next hours and looking forward enjoying real MB when it matters.

p.s.
I didn't like his change of numbers at the beginning of TC since 88 brought us the biggest disapointment last year. Hope its not a jinx.
Bennett is making the team and playing 70+ % of the snaps.

Name one story he has broken about the pats, I'll wait.

That is 100% ********. Perillo doesn't know what he is talking about.

I've watched Bennett two times in camp. On the surface, he does seem to have a lackadaisical attitude because he has a laidback personality and a slow gait, especially when returning to the huddle.

But there is no question he does have fire. I've seen him drop a Brady pass, come back to the sideline and slam his helmet on the turf and shout epithets at himself. I did not once see him out of position or alignment, and that is not something easily accomplished without a lot of homework. He also makes diving catches; that's atypical of an "unmotivated" player.

Another thing I observed about him is that even on the sideline, he would continually talk football and route-running in general with other receivers. Picking their brains, it would seem.

So the info youre going by is his own idiotic observations? Is that correct?
I don't know how much you and others here might listen to Perillo, but you must take whatever he says in proper context: he is an employee of the Patriots with Patriots Football Weekly. So, you can't expect to hear from him what might come from other reporters. Despite that, I've found him to be interestingly candid on occasion regarding individual players and behind-the-scenes team machinations. He's on TV/radio regularly during the season and generally is worth listening to, IMHO.

Maybe it was preseason game 4 and he is in contract year, so yeah he should play agreessive and tried to get hurt.

You can keep waiting. It's not his job to "break" stories.
Ha! We have members here that get psyched because they were the one that posted a breaking story first!

I find that very amusing

Perillo doesn't know his ass from his elbow either.
