The talk about Martellus Bennett

His blocking performance last week was immense. Too many people just get caught up watching the football/stat lines. Running behind him and Gronk is going to be fun this year. The two TE offence we had under Gronk and A-Hern may well be back.
Assuming Gronk gets his lazy arse on the field anytime soon.

All jokes aside, the average fan only knows stats now. There is a kid at work that goes straight to BSPN.com whenever we used to talk player comparisons. He's also the same guy who once tried to convince me Jimmy Graham was better than Gronk. Needless to say, I don't talk much football with that guy these days.

Week 3/4 of the preseason, certain posters were claiming that Bennett was on the bubble, and took some offense when I stated how ridiculous that was.

Hopefully they've come around, and have learned something from the experience.
I wasn't one of those posters, but to be fair I think it was probably spurred by a writer (I forget which one) who did a thought exercise speculating on a potential shocking cut.

Bennet of course wasn't cut, but that's where it came from. With any prediction like that, you're always on safer ground saying it's ridiculous--just like most would have said cutting Milloy or trading Mankins would have seemed ridiculous.

He's now in a place where his football IQ is finally being respected. In a manner of speaking, he has died and gone to football heaven.

With all due respect, I argue to the contrary! He has just now started living, and it looks like he's going to thrive!

(but I agree with your football IQ comment).

I wonder too if Gronk being out hasn’t helped Bennett from a mental standpoint. He’s looked at as a pretty top-shelf tight end, but entering a situation where he no way shape or form would be considered the best tight end on the team.

As so many of these guys thrive on being the alpha dog, Gronk not being around maybe helped...he threw himself into the blocking role against Arizona (yesterday too, but he was more involved in the passing game yesterday), not because he was a secondary choice, but because he’s a team guy and all that—the top tight end on the field, willing to do whatever it takes, etc.

Just seems like a good way to get him to become a Patriot. And when Gronk does come back, the dude’s already proved his bona fides with the Pats—he’ll block, he’ll register a 100+ yard game, whatever…bring it on. Not a bad way to start at all.

I'm not sure the Bennett sees it that way....he's a pretty free thinker, and the reality is with the emphasis the team has placed on TE, there's room for 2 #1 TE's here....in 2011, the Pats came 90 yards short of having 2 1000 yard TE's......I think these 2 could achieve it.....both can block and both can get big yards per catch......

2 headed monster........they can feed off each other

Yeah, just idle speculation really. Great start for the dude.

I get chills when I think about this offense firing on all cylinders later this season, if health holds up.

Gronk and Bennett as the tight ends, with Edelman and Hogan on the outside, and Lewis lined up next to Brady. Obviously you can swap in Blount, White, Amendola, Mitchell, Develin as needed (and I'm sure we will, especially just when the opposing DCs think they have us figured out).

It could be the epitome of everything we have been building to over the years. I just like to sit quietly and dream about it.

what isn't around here that hasn't already happened?

he's got similar ypc, and in 2 games, he's an almost 80% compl/tgt.....it's a reasonable assumption if they can be out there for 12-13 games together

I meant my initial post was idle speculation.

Per Mike Lombardi, the Pats needed to fix the running game.

Did they upgrade at RB? No.
Did they upgrade on the OL? Well, there's Thuney.

The biggest upgrades may have been Marty and Scar.

Well, technically Andrews at C (was benched when Stork came back) and Mason and Karras at RG.

I know Mason played last year but from what IIRC Mason primarily lined up at the LG spot.

Kinda funny how we spend years hearing about how players want to play for guys like Rex Ryan first and foremost. Turns out that lots of players--particularly the ones you'd most want to begin with--prefer winning to a "players' coach"
Absolutely, and not surprising, really.

Think of the teachers you recall fondly now--I'll bet they're not the ones who let you do whatever the hell you wanted, but the ones who maybe gave you a hard time, rode you a little, and helped you to succeed.

Regarding Mason.......I think having to wear the club is exactly what he needed......the guy is a physical specimen but needed something to force him to improve technique.......when the cast comes off, he will be a better player than before the injury

the thuney/mason combo provides some serious pulling action.......and having karras as depth is looking good too.

Thuney and Karras. Right.

Andrews was here last year, so he's not a talent upgrade in the usual way. (He is, however, a player who could have been expected to improve from last year to this one.)

So Dion Lewis at RB is not good? This year Blount sucks too?Why drafting RB in 2016 when you have such a talent in 2017 draft. As well as OT.

Drafting Stork, then Mason and Tree Jackson UDFA Andrews, then Thuney, adding Cooper is not upgrade over UDFA Kline, Wendell, Connoly?
The fact is they dont have luck with injuries. Stork concussion, Jackson knee PUP, Vollmer PUP, Cooper and Mason with almost no TC snaps. And why everyone forgetting about Tree Jackson. i think that Dante sees something in him and he is good pass protector. Maybe MAson has higher upside and will be starter but as a backup Tree jackson is ok. Again unlucky with injuries.
