There seems to be a lot of revisionist history here. I don't recall more than three or four of us, defending Cassel in the preseason.

We were the only ones, (besides Belichick!) who thought Cassel was doing what he was asked to do by Bill, and doing it with poise and aplomb. Cassel has all the physical tools; but QB is played between the ears, not between the yard-lines. I thought he passed the adversity testst that BB had created for him. And said so, only to get laughed at.

That was requirement to be a Charter member.

I was thinking the same thing. It might have been more than 4. But it sure wasn't 26. I screwed up making the poll. I should have made the poll show you could see the names of who selected what. I meant to do that but forgot to check that box when I created the poll.

......

You make it sound like a bad thing

Despite my mixed emotions about Bill Parcells' time as the Pats coach, I still value his observations. One that made great sense to me was "You are what your record says you are."

If Matt had a bang-up year, would it matter if the Pats still managed to come up short? I'm neither up nor down on him or any other particular player. I JUST WANT WINS. If the Pats lose because someone other than Matt screws up, he's still technically at fault - isn't it the Pats philosophy that they win and lose, and take group responsibility for both, as a team?

If they win, do you think they'll celebrate longer than five minutes this time before getting called on mess-ups?

Sorry the premium levels close after week 8; game 7.

However, once the Pats make the playoffs, we will running a special on the "bandwagon" membership level.

As long as my 16-0 dream is still alive, i don't mind jumping on 'bandwagon' at all.

Yes, my skin is thick.

Jets game is a good start.

See ... this is kind of so called "reasoning" that saw Cassel as quality
backup to Tom.

AzPatsFan and TheGodInAGreyHoodie,
so BB told Cassel to go there and look posied and give the air
confidence while failing to move the offense or score any points.
And this is why he deserved all your support. It matters not that
he didn't get his team to score because he passed an "adversity" test.
Based on this you guys were so gifted that you saw how good this
QB would be if called upon?

I really hope Cassel does very very well
and .... I'll even gladly bear the arrogance of you two proclaiming how
gifted with insight you were while most of us were just were blind.

There were alot more than four. Check the earlier poll about which QBs would make the final roster. Pretty easy to be one of the 26 if predicting Cassel was going to be the #2 entering the RS is one of your criteria.

With the extremely limited information pre-season games give us fans, the best evidence to use in a case like Cassel is to infer things based on decisions made by those that have all the information to analyze properly.

Also you can't discount his past growth, intangible qualities and abilities because of pre-season. He was also throwing to the likes of Chad Jackson and other fringe players most of the time, behind a hurting o-line in disarray.

From all we've heard about Cassel in practices and camps in the past is that he has the potential to be a quality starter in the NFL. Now it's just about getting those chances that all QBs fight/wait for.

The fact that the offense didn't score points in the pre-season with Cassel at QB is just a very very very tiny fact that we can draw 0 conclusions from alone.

I understand your point that we as fans just don't have enough information to properly analyze Cassel, but that is often the case. For example, people often mis-analyze cornerbacks because they just don't have all the information (e.g. my man Ellis Hobbs). We as fans of the Patriots are fortunate to have a guy like BB and his coaching staff that we can actually be extremely confident that his decisions will be correct because he has a very high success rate and proven track record.

Given the entire body of evidence, it becomes clearer that the "Cassel should be cut crowd" were very flawed in their reasoning. It would/should have been more of a surprise if Cassel WERE cut. We are all human and we have a tendency to let our emotions cloud our judgement as well as overvaluing the extreme short term results.

Well I think you are right in the sense there really wasn't enough 'evidence' to say he should he should be cut but certainly wasn't enough to say he's the number two QB needed if Tom went down.

But I think most of us expected more out of him when he was given the
so much playing time in preseason. Especially for a guy who had been
in the system so long.
From outside observers, fans, there was room for a lot of doubt based on
his performance on the field not just this preseason but his performance
is games that counted.

Any prior doubters interested in joining at the silver level?

I just jumped on the bandwagon (I bought the ticket a few days ago when I convinced myself that there was no one we could bring in worth bringing in). I'm fully expecting this team to make the superbowl.

The Jets humiliation was sufficient. Matt did enough to be an asset. My stated requirements were met. Sign me up

Deus was there and so was I.............someone should go back and keep score!!

Cassel has a number thats how many regular season games we will win 16-0 baby!!!!

He may not be as accurate as TB, he may not have the arm strength of TB, he may not be as good as TB. However BB has faith in him he hasn't gone out and got another QB Dante Culpepper is a FA so was Simms. We left them for some reason and picked Matt Gutierrez back up. If our coach believes in him and i have faith in BB I BELIEVE IN MATT CASSEL!

I would like to see a vet there to help him out in training and at games someone like Vinny Testaverde who knows parts of our system and knows the position. I also think he would benefit from a chat with Doug Flutie. The way he moves round reminds me of Flutie.

I will got with president member.

I was a charter member of the Cassel fan club until this preseason, when I finally jumped off the bandwagon in disgust.

Shows what I know about football. I am back on now.

There was a Poll on patsfans on which QBs would be on the roster, including any anonymous vet.

25% of us voted that it would be Brady Cassel, O'Connell, not a majority but far more than 4 people met the stated qualifications. Many of us racked up dozens of posts in a futile attempt to explain to the permanemtly dense that "No BB will NOT bring in veteran QB (insert favorite name here)"

Let me expound by saying although I felt that Matt was clearly our best option, including vets, as a #2, I am far from confident at this time that he is capable of bringing us 10 or more wins. Hope to be proven wrong.

That aside, he's human and will have a couple bad games. Hope they're in contests we weren't gonna win anyhow.
