The 2013 Prospect Thread

According to CBS Sports/NFL DraftScout, a whopping 52 underclassmen have declared with a week to go:

2013 NFL Draft: Underclassmen Tracker - CBSSports

That list doesn't include Florida St. OT Menelik Watson.

As far as I can tell, the big guys still undeclared are the top 3 OTs (Joeckel, Matthews and Lewan) and Alabama CB Dee Milliner.

Am I missing anyone?

Where do you think Eddie Lacy would go? He's better as a runner than Bernard isn't he? Iffy hands drops him a little.

I hope McCarrons draft stock will not increase too much during his senior year. Would be awesome if the Pats can grab him with a late round pick and develop him 3 years behind Brady to take over...

Late round pick? I doubt it. Someone will spend a day 2 pick based on his girlfriend alone. Seriously, he's too good a prospect to be a late round pick, unless he regresses significantly or has injury issues.

How much do you think his stock will drop if she dumps him?

One down - Luke Joeckel coming out:

I personally expect Milliner and Taylor Lewan to declare. Not sure about Jake Matthews, though I doubt his stock will go much higher next year. If he does come out, Johnny Manziel might want to get a good insurance policy.

Nice writeup on Manx's binky Garrett Gilkey (aka, the prospect soon to be known as "Mayo's binky, Garrett Gilkey" ):

Ducey: NFL goal now within reach for Gilkey - Omaha.com

Man, he looks cut. Of note:

He’s projected as a mid- to late-round draft pick, he said, after 27 NFL scouts visited Chadron to see him play for the Eagles, who went 9-3 and made the Division II playoffs. Several teams have told him they hope he’s still available in the fourth and fifth rounds. They like the flexibility in his hips, how he finishes plays, his aggressiveness, his technique and his explosiveness.

:cry2: So do I, based on the video Manx posted.

Manti Te'O stock slips

Where that leaves the winner of the Walter Camp, Bednarik, Lombardi, and Nagurski awards is open to debate, but in an NFL that does not value the traditional 4-3 inside linebacker as is once did, Te'o may find himself on the outside looking in unless he positions himself in pre-draft workouts as the kind nickel linebacker who can cover half a football field and deal with a multi-faceted NFL passing game. That's where he has more potential, because Te'o really does cover ground impressively. When it comes to hitting run gaps with authority, Te'o may need more help from defensive tackles than some people imagined.
Subpar performance in BCS title game raises serious questions about Manti Te

If the Patriots are convinced he'll be The One, as it were, I have no problem with them using even a 2014 1.

Here's a random thought, if Star Lotulelei doesn't get picked in the first four picks, then I can see him slipping to at least #10.

#5 Lions: They do pick BPA but they're well set for DT
#6 Browns: Another team with much bigger needs than DT
#7 Cards: Pass rush, QB and OL are their biggest needs
#8 Bills: Front four is the one strength they have.
#9 Jets: Again, much bigger needs lmost everywhere except front four.

#10 Titans: Finally a potential home.

Not sure how this is advantageous to the Pats except that if Star is falling to #10, that pushes Hankins and J Williams down.

Then I hope, the Pats can grab him with a 3rd round pick. Would be nice as Bradys successor!

Taylor Lewan returning to Michigan. Some new name leaving are; Kwame Gaethers - DT - Georgia, Chris Faulk - T - LSU, Bennie Logan - DT - LSU and am hearing Milliner, Fluker and Lacy from Bama are leaving.

Wow, I full expected Lewan to come out.

2013 NFL Draft: Underclassmen Tracker - CBSSports

With the season winding down, draft-eligible underclassmen will soon make their intentions known about returning to school or entering the 2013 NFL Draft. Last season a record 65 underclassmen were granted eligibility, surpassing the previous high (56), which was set the year prior.

In order to declare early for the NFL draft, prospects must meet the league's three-year eligibility and submit a written application to renounce their remaining college football eligibility. The deadline for underclassment to declare is Jan. 15, 2013.

Current Underclassmen Total: 63

Wow, I full expected Lewan to come out.

Could cause some trading at the top. Chargers, Eagles, Cards, Bears, Rams are all teams that need a LT and they're now left with only Joeckel and Fisher to chose from. Joeckel, presumably becomes much more valuable and Lane Johnson could see a rise up some boards.

Just to stoke the McCarron as future Brady replacement fires, these two tweets stood out for me (re: BCS game):

RT @Draft_Hub: So McCarron was 20-for-28 with four drops and two intentional throw aways.

https://twitter.com/DougKyedNESN/status/289271215405805569

McCarron was accurate on 24 of his 26 aimed passes with his only two misses being slight (very slight) overthrows on Cooper on deep posts

Not bad.

The thing with McCarron though is that he's really hard to evaluate because he has all the time in the world with that OL and play action works a treat with 'Bama's running game.

Not a good move by Lewan.

Faulk is intriguing as a former first rounder. I wish I had some 2012 film but that's only North Texas @ LSU.

Seems like everyone from LSU is declaring.

Perhaps you can bett evaluate him during his senior season with 3 of his 5 starting olinemen leaving (can't see Fluker staying after Matthews and Lewan not declaring).

Jake Matthews formally announces he's returning to Texas A&M, as rumored:

OT Jake Matthews will return to A&M, move to left tackle | College Sports Blog

So the top 3 tackles in the 2013 draft class are clearly Luke Joeckel (by a mile) and then Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson. Matthews and Lewan both going back real hurts the OT class. One of them would have been the 2nd tackle off the board this year, and at least one will be no better than the 2nd tackle off the board next year.

Good for Kyle Long and Menelik Watson. As high upside guys, they'll get a look from teams in the late first and second rounds.
