The 2013 Prospect Thread

Sounds like Hernandez and Spikes. Meyer just never threw any of their problem guys off of the team. Kept them around. Never said he can play cb in the NFL. But, I do know he'd be a better slot player than Ebner will ever be a safety.

Actually, he kicked Cam Newton out.

To mayo's point, Meyer gave Hernandez and Spikes a chance to show remorse and they did. Mathieu has been given several chances and has failed every time. Mathieu appears to have a dependence issue, and even if that doesn't immediately affect his play, there are rules you have to follow to show commitment, and he hasn't shown that commitment. High character isn't the issue.

This article says that Spikes, Hernandez and Harvin all failed drug tests at Florida. Spikes has even failed one in the NFL and cost himself 4 games his rookie year. We also wanted to draft Harvin.

Report: Spikes, Hernandez failed drug tests at Florida

The drug test in 2010 for Spikes was reportedly for Adderall, for which he had a prescription. Not quite the same as with Mathieu. As for Spikes and MJ, I don't believe he ever formally tested positive at an independent setting. It wouldn't shock me at all that he used it early in his college career - as probably did many, many players - but he seems to have been clean for a long time since then, and drug use really wasn't a question mark about him going into the 2010 draft. His timed speed was the big issue. I haven't seen one draft profile going back to 2010 that suggests that drug issues were a red flag with Spikes.

Urban didn't kick him out. The school threatened to over academic cheating. Big difference. Urban ran a very loose ship. I'm sure it lead to his early departure. He was only there for 6 years and had to leave for health issues. Too much stress. He recruited too many questionable characters and didn't boot them because of the pressure to win in the SEC. Not criticizing him for that. But, it's the truth.

winning pushes other priorities to the side, but Meyer is/was not hoarding dirtbags more than any other organization because of the pressure of winning. 10 other coaches shoulder the same pressure. Now we're speculating that morality was digging at Meyer and causing health issues. Hardly the concrete truth.

If the dark side really did eat away at your soul, John Calipari would look like death by now.

I'm amused at the idea that BB likes high character people. Didn't we just trade for Talib? And Haynesworth. And Ocho.

I've always felt he fills the locker room with captains and high character Jedis so that he can afford the problem prospects.

Probably less to BB, I would guess. Ebner has incredible athleticism and work ethic with great intangibles and upside. He's a ST demon who could possibly turn into more. That's worth a 6 to BB. Mathieu is an undersized playmaker with great instincts and poor man coverage skills who has multiple character issues and repeat drug problems. My guess is he won't be on BB's draft board.

Did you see his interview yesterday? I don't think I've ever seen a worse poker face. He probably had a joint in his pocket while he claimed he was going to be the next Ray Lewis. Undraftable.

He does not get the MHTK Seal of Approval.

Here's another op/ed piece on Florida. Don't lump the rest of the country in with the SEC. Saban runs injured players off when he thinks he can sign a better player. The NCAA has a 25 limit scholarship each year. Texas A&M has signed 35 with a month to go. 5 enroll early, but that's still 30. The pressure to win there is vastly different than any other league. Auburn fires their coach 2 years after winning the National Championship.

Where was that idea expressed recently in this thread? I certainly wasn't trying to imply it.

I think that BB is fine taking some guys with character risks. But selectively. I personally doubt that Mathieu will be one of them, and if so, not before the 6th-7th round. I think BB picks and chooses his spots to take risks.

BB is willing to take on character risks if they're willing to adopt the Patriot Way. He drafts a lot of choir boys, so to speak, so he can take a few chances here and there on the delinquents.

I refuse to believe that (A) BB actually wanted to draft Harvin, (B) knew he was going to Minnesota afterwards, and (C) told him, knowing Harvin might blab to Childress.

BB hates Childress.

This is Mackenzies and Mayo's guy Travis Kelce. I've been looking forward to seeing him and I'm very impressed. Excellent blocker, really good hands, nice football awareness. The only question I have is his speed of the LOS, he looks a little slow but is fine once he's up to speed. I hope we get some more of him, he's very Gronk-like in his skill-set and will be a fast riser. I wouldn't be surprised to see him climb up towards or into the 2nd round.

To be fair, he's Mackenzie's guy Travis Kelce, who Mayo, that johnny-come-lately binky-stealer, latched onto, just like he did with so many others.

:deadhorse: All I take credit for is being able to recognize talent when you guys point it out.

According to CBS Sports/NFL DraftScout, a whopping 52 underclassmen have declared with a week to go:

2013 NFL Draft: Underclassmen Tracker - CBSSports

That list doesn't include Florida St. OT Menelik Watson.

As far as I can tell, the big guys still undeclared are the top 3 OTs (Joeckel, Matthews and Lewan) and Alabama CB Dee Milliner.

Am I missing anyone?

I hope McCarrons draft stock will not increase too much during his senior year. Would be awesome if the Pats can grab him with a late round pick and develop him 3 years behind Brady to take over...
