The 2013 Prospect Thread

It's possible, but Ansah has a ways to go before that happens. And if it does, there are always other options.

Dan Kadar of Mocking the Draft had this update on SMU DE Margus Hunt recently:

2013 NFL Draft: SMU's Margus Hunt, Darius Johnson, Zach Line impress - SBNation.com

A couple of months ago Hunt was the latest flavor du jour on this board and many others for a freakish talent with unlimited upside at LDE. He's sort of fallen off the radar. It's easy to fixate on one prospect. Ansah may have freakish ability, but there are a lot of freak athletes out there, and a relatively small percentage actually realize their potential. I'm not saying he shouldn't be someone to watch closely and a high prospect of interest, but I doubt the success of our 2013 draft will depend on whether we land any single prospect. A year ago Chandler Jones was on no one's radar.

Actually I started a thread on Chandler Jones around this time last year But your point is well taken - I only highlighted Chandler Jones as an intriguing prospect.

Been wondering if Willian Gholston could be the first pick.

You guys think he could add bulk and play a DE/DT roll like Seamour?

I have a feeling Hunt might be a great fit at DT if he were to put on some weight, I'd also love to use him as a supersized TE here and there. Damn he's an intriguing one!

Mackenzie,

This is why I love your profiles. Whether I agree with your assessments or not - and there are times I don't - you do your homework, take your time to look at film, and you make your assessment to the best of your ability based on hard work and personal observation, rather than jumping on the. "hype train" like so many draftniks.

I've been interested in John Jenkins for 2 years. I first brought him to OTG's attention when he signed with Georgia. I love athletic DTs, and any kid with his size and some semblance of movement skills is going to get some interest from me.

With that in mind, Georgia's defense scares the bejesus out of me. So much talent, and so little production. Something doesn't add up. I personally wouldn't touch any of those guys, at least until I see that defense start to perform.

As for Jenkins, 5th round may be a bit harsh, but I agree that he's out of shape and massively overhyped right now. I've seen some discussions of him as a top 15 pick and possibly even sneaking ahead of Lotulelei or Hankins. I'd consider him in the late 2nd or 3rd round, but not earlier.

I'll try to explain Georgia's defense as well as I can.

First of all, the D-line is overrated. I hate Jenkins, Abry Jones is also out of shape, and Kwame Geathers has out of this world talent but doesn't know how to play. The only guy on that defense who can be counted on against the run is Jarvis Jones, and even Jones isn't top notch against the run. Ogletree flashes brilliance (amazing Outback Bowl), but is inconsistent, and Rambo is similar. The corners are frail

Thoughts on Mike Taylor, LB Wisconsin?

Listed as a 7th/FA on CBS looks better than that to me.

Jones was one my radar in August 2011, and I followed him closely last year. You may recall, when he declared in December I PM'd you about Jones, who I rated at that time as worth a mid-2nd round pick. But I certainly didn't expect him to be as dominant as he has been.

Too many guys who have talent but are inconsistent. Add in Cornelius Washington. Even Sean Jones, many people's DB binky on this board. And the defense overall is less than the sum of it's parts. I'll pass.

And you shouldn't have. The player they drafted and the player that showed up at camp were night and day.

Washington is a different player when you isolate his play on obvious passing downs.

The question is how high do you want to draft a sub-rusher?

I do like him, but Wisconsin has sucked this season. A bit of a poor man's Daryl Smith. I have him as a 4th rounder, maybe 3rd

1st rounders only.

2013 Prospects I love:

Montgomery
Star
Hankins
Teo
John Simon(not really a 1st rounder, love him though)
Lattimore
Reid(could definitely fall out of this list)
Bell

Guys I don't love:
Barkley
Bray
Any of the OT's
Keenan Allen
Kawann Short

Just wrote about Cornelius Washington. Underrated, has potential
Cornelius Washington- 2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report - NFL Mocks

I can’t emphasize this enough; I don’t think Washington will be an every down player in the NFL. He is terrible against the run, and, at this point, it’s safe to assume he always will be. That being said, I think he has a bright future as a purely situational pass rusher in the NFL. I think he’s a guy who can get at 8-10 sacks a year playing exclusively on third downs that also has the potential to dominate in coverage against many of the NFL’s tight ends. He’s a role player, but a pretty good one, who can give a team some nice snaps when asked. And he’s worth keeping an eye on.

Great minds think alike!

I think he'll run faster than a 4.68 though.

You know, this is the kind of guy I'd like to see on the Pats. Next season, I want Chandler Jones as a DT in obvious passing situations, with a quick "hair on fire" guy at DE. A "hair on fire" guy with some length sounds even better.

Personally I'd rather keep Chandler Jones where he performs best. Draft Ansah to shift inside on passing downs and have Bequette come in at DE.
