Some OL chatter

Someone get a still shot of Onwenu. Guy fell into college habits and his weight has obviously ballooned. At Michigan reports were he had difficulty controlling his weight. He was a three-year starter who performed at a high level.

Guess what? He looked about 370 in his first game back after his offseason ankle surgery—same weight he is thought to have eaten himself to in college.

He let the team down. It’s going to take a good month before he is in proper shape. He has my problem: food addiction.

Look to see plenty more of greenhorn Mafi. Or Sow when he’s back.
You weighed Onwenu?

Not being in game conditioning doesn't mean he blew up to 370 pounds, that's your imagination at work.

Ridiculous...

No. They did at Michigan. And 370 was the weight he repeatedly got up to. That’s why his draft stock plummeted.

BTW, your snarkiness is unappreciated. Did I ever say I weighed him. I merely said he looked heavier than normal.

And your optimism about the OL in August looks misguided now.

Onwenu did not play well. Yeah, I’m sure the first few run blocks he made guys cry for their momma. But he quickly got winded and, according to PFF, received a failing grade at pass blocking.

Again, this was already posted in the thread, by SlowGettingUp.

Calvin Anderson: 33.5 (146/161)
Mike Onwneu: 48.6 (127/161)
David Andrews: 48.9 (125/161)
Vederian Lowe: 49.1 (124/161)
Hmmmm PFF, well you can't have it both ways. You can't have the same posters saying something was wrong with Strange and yet PFF says he played great. Which is it?

You've repeatedly stated his weight ballooned this offseason with no proof whatsoever except he was standing next to 305 pound Calvin Anderson. Even at 330-350 pounds he is going to look much bigger than Anderson.

He was playing his first snaps of this season after coming off injury, he had very little practice reps in the offseason. Stop pretending you can guess his weight and saying "he let the team down," when they clearly had him on a pitch count prior to the game.

This is a lot like people telling us Trent Brown came into camp grossly overweight, then BB came out and said he reported lighter than he had in the past.

My off-season optimism about the O-Line was predicated on the starters getting healthy, which hasn't happened to this point.... has it.

you can say both, because PFF grades are arbitrary, just like the opinions of many posters hahaha

Thinking here about Anderson, who was absolutely brutal against the Dolphins. He wasn’t good against the Eagles but much worse in game #2, which is surprising considering what I would’ve expected given what I thought (probably wrongly) about the talent of Reddick and others for the Eagles in comparison to who he went up against on the Dolphins.

What do we suppose happened to him? He missed the preseason, could it be just that he is not really in game shape yet? There’s no indication I’ve seen of an injury but those guys are always banged up to some extent I think.

Last year in Denver, his starts were at LT, so as @captain stone points out maybe he is a passable LT but not a RT at the NFL level - in Denver he was apparently 3rd on the RT and LT depth charts before injuries to Bolles and Fleming led them to start him at LT. Obviously the Pats preferred Lowe over him at LT this past week, it’s not like he had done so well for so long at RT that they wanted continuity there, so clearly he is 3rd on the LT depth chart here too.

Has Wheatley gotten on the field yet? They spent a roster spot in him so either he’s not ready yet or not good enough to overtake Anderson as bad as Anderson had been so far.

What happens when Rieff recovers from his injury? Does he supplant someone at OG or will they try him again at OT. Personally I don’t see using a roster spot on him given what he looked like in preseason but what the hell do I know?

Sorry for the doom and gloom here, I’m usually a lot more optimistic, try to be anyway.

On the plus side it gives me more reason to watch college football, trying to have a look at OT prospects so if and when the Pats select one I have a frame of reference.

The Pats drafted J Andrews early so I assume they already see D Andrews slipping.
If they did, then why didn't they sign a vet backup Center better than Thanksdad, i.e.: Anybody Else?

...Brown at LT and I think they need to do something at RT. Maybe try Sow?

No no no no NO!

Playing the Sow at Right Tackle during TC/preseason was a COLOSSAL waste of time when he should've been playing LEFT Tackle & LEFT Guard during TC/preseason instead.

The fact that Wheatley hasn’t played means very little. He and Lowe are still trying to learn the playbook. Lowe admitted after the game that it was a big challenge for him because he was still just trying to get to line calls correct. Wheatley is still relatively new to the position (converted TE) so he is known to be more of a developmental guy. I’m not sure why some are criticizing them for acquiring him at this point, other than the fact that some criticize Bill as though it is a bodily function.

D Andrews is OK this year. J Andrews hopefully is ready in 2024.

Brown and Strange are entrenched on the left side.

The Patriots have been doing unforced errors like this for several years now. Swapping Wynn and Brown at the tackle spots last year was an obvious mistake.

Moving Chasen Hines, a doppelgänger to Onwenu in his being strictly a RG (and a backup center), to LG this preseason where he predictably struggled.

Drafting an inexperienced LG in Mafi and putting him at RG.

Anderson, who clearly is LT and is undersized to begin with, and moving him to RT against Miami…well the poor result is evident for all to see.

The jury is still out on Adrian Klemm. Am I alone in wanting Cole Popovich to return to the organization? He and his sidekick now with the Raiders were shaping up to be adequate to fill the big shoes of Dante. Until he refused the jab.

I'll give Klemm more time but I'd have no problem if we could get Popovich back.

This game three will go a long way determining a lot of people’s future, from Zach Wilson to Bill Belichick.

Don’t forget our new OL coach, Adrian Klemm.

As I wrote in another thread, Miami’s new OL coach, Butch Barry, has made that group into a top tier unit. An amazing transformation.

Trent Brown played left tackle at a pro bowl level in 2018. The line didn’t struggle last season because they swapped him and Wynn, they struggled because Patricia was a dumpster fire and the scheme was preschool level. Opponents knew the snap counts and were calling out whether it was a pass or run pre-snap.

Left guard, right guard… you’re making too much out of this. A large percentage of linemen can play both sides well. Last year Patricia was the problem, not the talent.

This year they’ve had a rotating cast of rookies, newbies and the occasional starter mixed in. One season has nothing to do with the other.

They get most or all of their starters back this week, they still have to go out there execute well and call a smart offense.

they should offer Scar $10 million to come consult and help with the Oline

are they top tier, or does getting the ball out in 1.5 seconds and relying on YAC result in most teams only rushing 3/4 and not blitzing much come into play......and teams don't load up on the run, trying not to cover those receivers, factor in.......is it the "great OL coach" or the great offensive scheme making the OL coach & the OL look better as a result?

when the pats did blitz on occasion or stunt, to dial up some occasional pressure, they were successful in getting pressure and forcing mistakes.....you just can't do that often against that scheme, or you'll get slashed with quick passes and monster YAC

i mean, both can be true.....but that dolphin scheme and skillset at WR really makes things like pass rush very difficult, and sets up the run well......honestly, if the Pats D had been healthy, the model of attacking that O was pretty solid....

Anderson has been a jag. yes, potential, but to date unfulfilled. that said, he should be able to build into a serviceable T thru the season.
I see no reason Brown will change his ways. it is no longer 2018, when he parlayed a very good half season into a nice contract. if and when motivated, he is a good enough T.
Onwenu should only improve with a new contract hanging in the balance.
I assume D Andrews will be his usual solid self.
Strange was average last season. he is fighting a knee injury. Mafi or Sow might be a better option.

the group should build to an acceptable OL. if and when they do, will the team be in contention or already out of the playoffs?
