If they somehow beat Buffalo I would certainly be looking at the team differently because that would mean they elevated from being probably the worst team in the league all the way up to being able to knock off one of the best (maybe THE best) team in the league, in their house, on national TV.

So yeah I would probably be re-thinking my opinion because that’s a pretty huge change in performance.

I wouldn't. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, or, even a blind squirrel will eventually find a nut, Etc.

With the understanding that the Pats will not get a top name, established coach, Flores is a real option. He would be the epitome of getting a coach on the second stop after learning a thing or two the first time. (Same with Vrabel) Doing the job in Minnesota really validates that his on field results are real after what happened in Miami. It is fair to say that he was trying to do the right thing in dysfunctional environment and did not handle the situation well. At the end of the day he has that hard wired sense of urgency needed from a leader that can not be taught. It is much easier to get someone to learn to take a step back before taking action rather than having to kick them in the ass to get moving.

I would not hate Flores as HC, just as long as he brings in the right coordinators and position coaches.

I just don’t get the thought process. They fired the last guy because things were apparently so bad, but his replacement is even worse; took the same defensive crew and made a mockery of it. Why give him more time? What is he good at, what does he do, what has he improved on over the course of the year?

“Criticism is going to happen. Not everyone’s a Patriots fan. I understand the frustrations as we continue to build this thing out. In saying that, it’s fine, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.”

So… apparently… if you don’t like him then you’re just not a Patriots fan, since only non-fans are criticizing him, right?

However, you had Mayo indicating otherwise. Mayo basically sounding like he believes he is a DEI hire. I was hired "to be a black head coach." Instead of I was hired to be the coach and I happen to be black. Then Mayo explaining how he will use DEI methods to build a team that looks like the world and how he doesn't want to be colorblind so he can fight racism.

That was one of the more bizarre introductory press conferences. And what was said made many of us think this team was going to turn into a three ring circus this season. And we were right

When Mayo says that politics will be at the forefront of everything he does as head coach, it's ok.

When people react to it, they're the ones accused of being political and bringing politics where it doesn't belong.

It's like basketball tryouts, a guy shows he can't shoot, can't dribble, can't rebound, can't pass, but then in the end he hits one from the other side of the court, nothing but net. Nice shot, you're still not making the team.

I voted no because this won't go far enough. This piecemeal change is just dragging on the inevitable. RKK should do what he should have done last season, cast a wide net and interview HC & GM candidates only from the outside.

Robert, your internal candidates are not good and haven't been good for the last 4 seasons. You are not holding a dynasty together. That dynasty is way back in the rear view mirror. Time to start fresh.

Additionally how attractive is the HC (or even OC) job here if the owners became known for canning coaches and personnel after one season?

but most of what you said ONLY applies to the offense, and the offense has been better than the defense. You mentioned all of these items as reasons for patience with Mayo and none of these apply:

- Terrible roster: the defense is fine, they were good last year with the same players
- Turnover in schemes: the defensive scheme is the same
- Coach needs time to find his footing with players: it’s the same players he was coaching last year as the co-DC

So none of those apply to the defense but the defense has fallen apart. Makes no sense why we should be patient based on the above. As for the other points:

- Got saddled with a bad OC: whose fault is that? Maybe he shouldn’t have been gunning for a HC job if he had no connections to anyone? Seemed like his only “guy” he had a connection to was Nick Caley, and Caley didn’t want to come play for him
- One of the worst OL in football: true, but a very good QB capable of mitigating that to some extent. Also, the Texans/Seahawks both have OL roughly as bad and they’re both playoff teams so a bad OL is not the be-all/end-all for an entire roster

Just seems like a lot of excuse making for the guy.

I hear ya but we have to admit that would be pretty big wouldn’t it? It would have to be a situation where Buffalo was asleep at the wheel. But if Buffalo is on their A Game and the Pats still take them out, in Buffalo, would be significant.

100% it’s not about the record it’s about the dysfunction and the 3 Stooges coaching staff proving what we all thought when they were hired, that they aren’t qualified.
Players development is hurt more by bad coaching than by a change to good coaching.

I went back to his press conference. 3 minutes in to him speaking he brought up DEI.

I don’t want to get into parsing every comment he makes but yesterday he said Gonzalez is the best player on defense because he plays hard every play .
This is such a different attitude than belichick or any other HC. It’s so contrary to the team attitude, the attitude that we win as a team and lose as a team to get up and say he is better than all the other defensive players.
Do your job has become single individuals out (6 days ago he threw the OC under the bus) and throwing blame around at others.
It just feels like a bad culture to me.

Was the OC truly selected by Mayo or was it Wolfe? Sounds more like no one else was convinced or paid enough to take such a ****ty job until it’s become clear that Maye is good.

I don’t blame Mayo for taking the opportunity, anyone who ultimately wants to be a head coach is likely to gun for it when the opportunity presents itself.

I don’t agree that a QB can just mitigate a historically bad offensive line to the point of it becoming not a huge issue. It’s impressive what Maye has done but what good can a QB do when his receivers are also an abomination or his OL cannot block without holding and costing the team points every damn time we get to the red zone? This is an Eliot Wolfe problem.

But that’s getting away from the point. I’m pretty sure I said that the defense is why he ought to be fired so what are we disagreeing on here? Are we supposed to definitively state that Jerod Mayo is the worst head coach in history and he has committed crimes against humanity?

I think it’s already time to pull the plug so I largely agree. I’m just also acknowledging that the owners and GM didn’t help him out in anyway. This is an organization wide disaster, not just him.

The worst part is the last comment. The first rule in competitive situations is effort doesn’t replace results.
Trying hard and failing is still failing and you can’t feel good about failure because you tried hard.
This attitude seems to permeate the 3 Stooges coaching staff.

Mayo here says even though the results aren’t what we want they play hard. First there is no evidence they okay any harder than anyone else and it’s such a loser mentality. I lost but I tried hard is just an attempt to shirk responsibility for the result, which is all that matters.
Covington says basically the same thing this week. Dont worry about results be proud they do the minimum and show up and try.
AVP shunned results and said his play calling that failed was fine, we just didn’t execute.

We have entered the stage where the focus of this team and staff is to make you feel good about failure.

When reporters ask the coaches who interviewed how it went and they say they were surprised they didn’t talk more about football stuff you end up with a guy who isn’t good at football stuff but talks a good “developing people, be their friend, earn their respect” hogwash game.
