Seau Expected to Re-Sign With Patriots

seau only played 2 downs and obvious running downs.

he'll do something similar depending how Bruschi rebounds inside

Colvin is 10x as good the player he was injured in 2003 and 2x the player he was rehabbing in 2004.

Wow, I like being positive but this is plain homerism. Colvin is good, but he's not close to the playmaker McGinest was for us.

How is that a Homer statement? I would actually accuse YOU of purposefully taking a contrarian's position. The level of Devil's advocacy you're laying out is actually bordering on Felger-ishly annoying.

Colvin was immensely better post injury, and has shown considerable improvement each year. Even with a severely depleted LB corp he's produced nicely. I would argue that in light of that depleted position, he was a huge playmaker for us last year.

Your definition Homerism is way off. Not everyone chooses to take your glass is half empty view of the Linebacking corp.

colvin was our best LB last year..and hes improving every season

Gives the Patriots a good 5 man rotation at LB and allows some [laying time for Woods, Mays and/or Alexander or whover they feel has the best shot(s) at becoming good future players. I agree that Vrabel can still play outside and suspect that he and Thomas will flip/flop at the LOS at times. Like after Peyton's done withe his theatrics -:)
There's some "if's" here., but if Wilson and Harrison can come back to play like they did a couple of years ago and Meriweather picks up the system quickly, I also suspect on obvious pass downs some 3 safety looke with Harrison near the LOS and Wilson and Meriweather playing deeper. Or Wilson and Harrison back with Meriweather playing the slot guy or whatever combo they use depending on the opponent.
There's combo's to use amoungst the DL's, LB's and DB's themselves and with the other groups and how they can work togther. And maybe we'll have a year without a lot of DB injuries so they can all jell well together.

Colvin is so much more of a complete linebacker than he was when he first signed here. The injury was a huge setback but before he just rushed the passer every down but now he plays the run and even drops back into coverage. The plays where he knocked down the pass against the Jets in the playoffs (which turned into fumble) and the interception against the Chargers were awesome. He wouldn't have made those when he signed here.

Considering Colvin's injury back then and the fact that Thomas is probably better than McGinest, I'd say they're even.

At this point of the season, Colvin was still healthy back then.

I think this is great news, but I too will only really be comfortable if there's a confirmed 6th good player as well.

Seau = another piece of the veteran leadership puzzle for Moss and Meriweather

http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070512/news_1s12nflnotes.html

"A source familiar with the situation said last night that the veteran linebacker will re-sign with the New England Patriots late next week, pending a physical exam."

I am not saying he is the end all be all of linebackers but he if can come in and play 1st and 2nd downs in a roatation the defense will be improved.

We can start to examine our backup backups but if Seau is signed and he shows well in training camp then there is precious little to complain about on this roster.

ROLB - Colvin, Woods
SILB - Seau , (winner of the Lua/Warren,Bissinger, Mays death match), Izzo
WILB - Bruschi, Alexander
LOLB - Thomas, Vrabel, Rogers

On 3rd downs the goal would be to place the top 4 LBs on the field (Colvin, Bruschi, Vrabel, Thomas).

I hope the rumor is true.

Finally, there's news of the missing link! This is great news indeed. The problem last year was that when Seau went down and Vrabel replaced him in the middle, Tully for the most part took his spot, which in turn the opposing teams responded by attacking the strong side B or C gaps effectively with the running game. Now, even if Tedy or Seau gets knicked up and Vrabel or Thomas is forced to slide over to the inside, it still leaves Vrabel or Thomas on the outside to do a better job of plugging their gaps on running downs.

AND....we also get Rodney back!!!:D

How about the D-Line?

We have such solid depth its crazy.

Then the LB corps Seau, Tedy, Colvin, Vrabel, and Adalius Thomas!

Some younger players that, who knows??

Then in the backfield:

Harrison, Meriweather, Wilson, Hobbs!, Randall Gay (this is my guy in Madden -- always line up as Gay and blitz from the dime!!!),and MAYBE Asante Samuel.

Then there's the rookie from Notre Dame who I don't know anything about.

BUT SEAU signing is huge. A broken arm is not a knee injury. He is the most sick inside LB ever, or at least among them. He played AWESOME last year.

Don't forget RANDY MOSS to throw to?

So pysched now!!

This is great news! Love to see Jr get his ring. I really think that Seau connected very quickly with the fans here and was truly touched by the standing O he was given when he was helped off the field. Let's get it done this year!!!!

Seau came within minutes of recieving a ring last year...
I share the concerns of age and injuries, but I would be a fool to second guess our front office evaluation of talent.
Count me among those who was saddened that we didn't select a top LB in the last 2 years draft...but who can complain about our results as a team this century?
I think we must develop players (such as Givens) to remain competitive under the salary cap, we can expect TBCs replacement to miraculuosly appear from our TC this year.
Frankly Seau we be a cheap quality ILB who should make his presence felt in run defense.
Free agency isn't over yet.
I expect Samuel to play.
and 1 or 2 extra free agants coming aboard
and a couple WRs traded for low picks next year...

I'm all for this. I've been saying all along (with a good number of people here btw) that it wasn't just a case of WR's dropping balls last year or failing to get open that lost us the Indy Game. We scored a ton of points in the first half for goodness sakes. If Seau had not gotten hurt, no one would have been able to run at us like they did in the latter part of the season. Seau was awesome last year especially against the run and i'm glad to see him back here.

The true news here isn't Seau's (probable) return, it's his return prior to mini-camp. I was unable to find the Colvin item from the other day where he was discussing his off-season efforts to make sure he's ready for all the ways BB/DP/MP will use this versatile talent pool in the defense or I'd link it here - but the bottom line to bringing Seau in for mini-camp is this is where the 2007 playbook/scheme gets installed. Seau starting this early means the five "senior" members of the LB corps (Izzo, the sixth, being more STs' specialist) will be here for the installation - putting the LB unit that much further ahead from the past two season's struggles. Assuming Seau is re-signed next week, the full participation of the core LB rotation in the installation is very good news for Pats' fans, and antacid companies.

Good point... I loved having Roman Phifer here but he'd obviously not re-sign until well into training camp... I can't think of too many guys who wouldn't cut camp short if they could - certainly there's no need to sign this early - unless you are REALLY motivated to get back to game shape and work with the new guys.

also for me this is a good news

i expected it honestly

i think he can rotate well and he can still play and contribute

Vrabel has "clearly" lost a step? I don't think that's true.

Most of us wanted Vrabel on the outside for this year. He is less suited to play inside.

Seau's broken arm was a freak injury. I wouldn't call him injury prone because of it.

Yes, they're old. What are the Pats supposed to do? Stock the roster with young players behind them? That's what they've done, and it won't help.

Phifer and Johnson weren't dinosaurs in their final years? McGinest hadn't lost a step by 2005? Give me a break.

Colvin is 10x as good the player he was injured in 2003 and 2x the player he was rehabbing in 2004.

I'll take the 2004 Bruschi over the 2007 Bruschi, sure. But the 2004 and the 2007 Vrabel are very even. The 2004 Colvin isn't anything like the 2007 Colvin. The 2007 Thomas will be better than the 2004 McGinest. The 2007 Seau is every bit as good as the 2004 Johnson or Phifer.

The 2004 unit was beyond deep. It was utterly dominant. But in 2003, does Matt Chatham starting ring a bell? There was NO depth on the outside. Johnson was sparsely used inside.

The 2004 unit's backups were a very raw Banta-Cain, Chatham, Izzo, Davis, and Alexander for a few weeks.

The 2007 unit's backups will be an improving Woods and Alexander, Izzo, Mays, Rogers, and probably Lua.

Those two units are very, very comparable. One is much younger than the other. And don't complain about that, because you just went on about how the Pats are too old there.

If you think the Patriots don't have depth at LB right now, I'm very curious to see what you think depth is. Who do you want the Pats to get? Spikes? Urlacher? Briggs?

Yeah, what He said.

This is great news for us and for Seau, who hopefully will get his ring. What a fantastic mix of vets and youth we have and I can't imagine any better mentors for these new guys than the ones we have on board.
Props to Seau for returning in time for camp, too. He must be still as motivated and focused as he was last year.
The season can't get here fast enough.
