That guy isn't good enough to play backup, or so I've been informed.

Who knew when Bledsoe went down and Brady came in that he would lead them to their 1st Super Bowl?
I never said it was likely.Probably not. Next year's QB draft class is supposed to be very good. And if Garoppolo rides the pine all season or has to play and plays poorly, teams may lose interest in him. He will never be worth more than he is now unless Brady goes down for a long period of time and Garoppolo plays spectacularly. But then, the Pats wouldn't trade him anyway.
Unlike this year, next year's draft is expected to have legitimate QB talent available. Why would the Browns lose a year of JAG and then pay a premium for him in a year when there are other excellent options available?
Sounds like he wants Garoppollo here as insurance to Brissett in case he gets hurt again.
Well they have the picks to gamble. If jimmy plays well than they have their guy no matter what. As great as the class is let's not forget that you have quarterback busts everywhere. The fact that bill doesn't want to give jimmy G makes 2018-2019 interesting.
Plus the fact that Darnold is about 5 and a half years younger (Darnold doesn't turn 20 until this June). If the Browns suck this year, they'll be in position to draft Sam Darnold. At that point, the desire to pay big money + picks for JAG is likely to be nonexistent for them.

More than likely the Browns won't have the #1 pick again. Heck, at 1-15 if 49ers hadn't lost Week 16 the Browns wouldn't have had it this year.Plus the fact that Darnold is about 5 and a half years younger (Darnold doesn't turn 20 until this June).
Also, I think at least coming out of the draft Darnold has a much higher ceiling than Jimmy G did.
Darnold is one of the best QB prospects in the last several years.

The Jets also look like they're all in to absolutely tank for Darnold.
Another theory is that Bill didn't feel the need for a first this year but would rather have them next year. Cleveland offers their 1st and 2nd this year and Bill says F off. Cleveland sleeps on it last night and is even more freaked out today, they call Bill and offer TWO 1st's next year and one or two 2nd's. Bill says "throw in a 2nd this year and you have a deal", Cleveland bites, Bill wins.
One other thing, now that Garoppolo isn't getting traded, the "We can't give up the back up QB this year even for three first rounders because the Pats are all in" brigade are going to declare victory.
Unfortunately, we may never know why Garoppolo wasn't traded to the Browns or anyone else. The only way we will know for sure is if he is the Patriots' starting QB in 2018.
