Report: Patriots working to trade Matt Judon to Atlanta (Update: Deal is done)

I am going to miss Judon and appreciate what he did for the Pats. Great player and leader. However, I think a third round pick was good compensation. This rebuild is going to take time and lets hope Mayo, Groh & Wolf do what is necessary to put together a competitive roster.

Now rumor is that atl won’t be extending him…whaaaa

Very surprising, especially on the heels of the Reddick drama. Leads me to believe that the blood was worse than we thought between Judon and the Patriots, but also raises some serious concerns from the Falcons side of things. Maybe the pressure of wanting to make a good impression on new teammates will keep him motivated to play, but it's a bit of a gamble.

Judon was not home grown.

His trade re-inforced the messaging.

Complain and become a distraction and you are gone.

Basides, Judon was taken care of last year and got big money from the team as FA.
I don't think the players care if was drafted here or not.

I think the message that is getting reinforced is that it's hard for the teams best players to get paid by the Krafts.

This won't stop other players from complaining if they think they are underpaid too if anything the opposite.

And they don't won't remember the details if when Judon got paid before all they see is management trading a very good player for a mid round pick.

Agree. Sacks are the topic as that is what the poster focuses on.

I don't think Judon is a great edge-setter/run defender but his value in disrupting the passing game more than makes up for it.

Well, the rebuild plan is to establish a different team culture, bring along a rookie QB very slowly. Lock up the young veterans to long-term deals and add talent where they need it.
I guess it depends on what you mean by "very slowly." Drake is going to get a year holding the clipboard, but it's fully expected he will be the guy in 2025. Once he is, I hope they've built some semblance of a team around him as opposed to expecting him to be the savior.

There's been some arguing about Mac and if everything was his fault. I personally think the Pats broke him for good. He was never going to be what they wanted him to be, and they drafted him too early and tried to tout him as the next big thing. He showed flashes of what he could be in the right system, and with a good defense, in his first season. Then the Pats got cute in a bunch of ways that no one needs listed here, and things went to hell.

Is Drake better than Mac? I believe so. But I also think they reached for him in desperation to try and fix the mistakes they made with Mac. It will remain to be seen if he's the next savior, but I already think they're putting too much stock in him without giving him enough support. Is the 2025 team going to be significantly better than the 2024 team? I doubt it but come opening day next season Drake will be taking those reins.

This is for another thread, and I hope I'm wrong, but I wanted them to draft MHJ and build as the 49ers did, from the outside in. Create the system and get the right players on both sides of the ball, then plug in a serviceable QB to run it. I think as QBs get more and more expensive this is going to be the way to team build moving forward. That is not a knock on Drake, more a testament to where I think the league will go in the next 5 years.

No but my point is he got his money. A player who hasn't been paid couldn't care less about the contract squabble of a player who has.

The 10+ extensions doled out this offseason ruin your arguement

Players will always complain about their contracts.

Players know when they get old, injured and don't perform they are vulnerable

Got that feeling the next few years there’s going to be a continuous shuffle of players. Hopefully only a couple of years, but I got a feeling if Mayo gets ****canned in three years, which I’m betting dollars to donuts, this shuffle is gonna continue till the 2030s….dont get too attatched to any player !!

My original point was that by trading Judon they wipe away any goodwill that might have been forged by those extensions.

I think that's a bit too extreme. Judon was not the only player in that locker room that other players liked. Also, while he may have been their best player, he wasn't the only really good player, and others (like Barmore, Dugger, Stevenson, and Peppers) got their deals. If failing to re-up one player is enough to sour a locker room on you, there's not a team in the league that wouldn't have that reputation.

Nobody wants to extend him coming off an injury. He's either going to suck and fumble the bag or play like a stud and hold somebody hostage for a contract so they can hold their breath that his decline isn't immediate.

The team's best players have been getting paid by the Kraft's. In fact, many on here complained how many of them were paid by the Kraft's. The "I am mad at the new regime because Bill got fired" crowd is so all over the place. One of you is mad we literally didn't sign 70 free agents. Others are mad that we retained so many guys from last year's team even though they're Bill Belichick picks. Now it seems that that group is mad that we didn't sign a 32 year old to big money who was already causing a distraction.

Maybe a bit extreme but I'm not happy so forgive my hyperbole

We're all allowed our own opinions right or am I supposed to conference with the people you've labeled team Bill

Ive never really known what that meant anyway since I was always team TB12 too. I tend to like the coaches and players who perform well when they are here so forgive me if I like Bill, Brady, and Judon.

You can be the leader of team save money if you want. I'm not on that team.

So, Judon was due $7.5M to play for us this year. He refused without more money.

After many meetings with Judon, the team traded him for a 3rd.

Judon is now under contract (after his physical) to play for ATL for $7.5M (including game bonuses).

Now, ATL can try to get him to play for a reasonable amount of money.
===============
The reality is that we didn't think that we could sign him to a reasonable long-term contract now (to a player returning from a major injury) or later with a player that wants to be PAID.

It seems that much of the anger is that the team did not properly address OT. The team will be right on track if the OL settles down a bit. Otherwise it will be a very long year.

4 of 5 were toast and the other (Randy) regretted it. Judon, we'll see. Given how engaged he was with the team and fans, he certainly got a kick in the ass on the way out.

I agree..

I don't like the move. HOWEVER, It does fall into line with what Wolf/Mayo have done in constructing the team.

They've gotten rid of many guys who were over 30. I think that only Godchaux has gotten a contract while being 30+ from this management.

Looks like Keion White and Anfernee Jennings are going to be our starters on the Ends.. It's going to be interesting to see if UCHE progresses or if he flames out.

Not adequately addressing the tackle spot after it being basically ignored last year is a legitimate gripe. Ideally we would have gone tackle in round 2 but I assume it has to be top priority next year.

Everyone is allowed to think what you want and I won't get mad at anyone for not being happy we traded our best player. My posts were in response to you claiming the players in the locker room will neglect the money paid out to the rest of their teammates because a 32 year old malcontent, to some extent, forced their hand and got traded.

Do you think they are happy with Wolfe today?

Yeah if the OL was looking good, if Maye was beating out Jacoby, if Barmore was back, and/or some combination then this would be much easier to handle. But the cumulative effect is frustrating and the season hasn't even started.

And please don't misunderstand my including Maye above as some knock on him I think he's looked pretty good just that if he was really lighting it up it would make anything bearable.
