You like Agholor over Myers on the field? Is that just more due to scheme fit?
That's a very interesting question, Joey. Let me TRY and explain my choice. I felt Aghular was very much underused last season. It seemed like he spent much of his time running clear out routes, than being an actual potential target. I don't know if that was because of Mac's rookieness, or because a belief that Aghular was limited in some way by McDaniel. I believe it was more of the former.
We all seem to want a WR who can "take the top off the defense". Well Aghular actually HAS that kind of speed. But we rarely saw him run stop and go kinds of routes, or the deep in cuts we see speed guys like Hill do routinely. Now was that because he couldn't run those kinds of routes well, or was it Mac wasn't ready to throw them in his first year. I'm hoping it was the latter and he will be better at it this season.
The passing offense this season could be greatly changed with Smith and Keane lining up at TE/FB and Wing positions creating even more dynamic problems for defenses to deal with. I don't think the addition of Parker/draft picks is going to change the fact that the running game is still going to be the heart and soul of our offense and that our passing offense is going to be based on how we can take advantage of teams that will be stacking their defenses to stop that run
As to Myers, I LOVE the kid. He is a classic overachiever, But the fact remains that he is limited as a receiver. He isn't fast. He isn't quick, and he can be taken out by good man defense. The very fact that he gets the production he DOES get is remarkable. My placing him as my 4th WR doesn't diminish what he's done. But it DOES recognize those limitations. In my humble assessment, Aghular offers a unique skill set that Myers doesn't. He can run fast. And in a league where speed kills, Myers can't kill, BUT he does have his place, but in my mind it's as quality depth.
But if say Tre Nixon or some rookie comes to camp and shows HE can do that job on the outside, I'd let go of Nelson in a nanosecond. But as of THIS moment, there is no one on the roster that can replace Aghular's skill set and until we do, we need to keep him. Just a thought
