To me the “no-Lewis“ situation is not about White (I even saw some positive signs of his improved running). Its just a huge blow to the entire offence not because of how much better he is at running or receiving but because its impossible to read the offence with him on the field (taking the pressure off our depleted OL as well). Moreover this might take away a significant amount from our passing extravaganza ...

White and Blount are very solid each in his own “part“ of the game. But they cannot replace Lewis because with him its like you have both Blount and White on the field - on the other hand, with Blount and White you always have a one-sided back on the field. At least with Brown and Gaffney you keep the Ds guessing. Unfortunately they are far from Lewis.

I hope the slight signs of White's improved running efforts show up already on Friday. Its a great situation that we go against Panthers for this incredibly crucial dress rehearsal. If we cannot run on Friday (without underlining our intentions w Develin + 2TE + 6th OL in Fleming) I am moving to a trade for RB camp.

Yea I'm still not sold on White as a runner both rushing and after the catch. He goes down very easily. Thats the main reason why Lewis is a vastly superior player than White. Elusiveness, after initial contact, a little more power, etc.

To me White seems a little faster in the open field but that in no way makes him a better player. He just isn't.

Well this is not ideal, but I would rather have Lewis for 6-games plus the playoffs then 8-10 games and then have him miss the playoffs. If he plays in the Denver game back in January the Pats win.

No wonder he never showed up to camp.

People need to get over Lewis.......the flash in his game also has him a hair from being crushed like a bug

he's blast to watch, but that blast simply does not have him long for the game

Even if that's a clean up surgery it's been reported that he had a setback in his recovery. I'm counting him done for this season, I hope BB is too and making plans with this assumption so if he comes back good, if not, it is what it is.

Good news (kinda): No one expected this guy to play like he was playing last year, he was on the bubble roster and until pre-season game 4 no one had him as a lock. This offense was not built around him, they can still move the ball with White or any other jag pass catching RB. What we really need is a power back, Blount is looking a better player so far, but we all know his ceiling.
I'm not counting him out. It seems most are expecting him back at some point. Until he goes on permanent IR, I am also. Now, how long before he goes down again after returning is another matter.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I was not counting on Lewis being ready to start the season at anything close to full strength.

An acl doesn't fully heal that fast and I thought many people here were overly optimistic.

I posted the same as well. I never thought he'd be ready to start the season. Kinda like Gronk a few seasons back. Didn't know he'd have this setback/follow up surgery though. I don't see him on the Pats next year, the poor guy just can't stay healthy.

Yeah, he's under contract but he's not a superstar to get the kind of privilege of a roster spot guaranteed. He played what, 6 or 7 good games for us when defenses were not prepared for him. He is a great player but the position he plays and the way he plays would make him susceptible to injuries even if he was made of iron and we know that's not the case, he came to New England with a history of injuries. The only way he is a lock for next season is if he comes back this year and makes a difference.

Of course they should have drafted a RB. That was plainly obvious when the offseason started. They didn't. Now the team has to hope that decision doesn't come back to bite them in the ass.
You would've taken Devontae Booker with the Valentine pick?

The quicker returns of certain players have set the bar higher in terms of what's expected in the recovery time. Optimistic fans now assume that their favorite player can return from an ACL tear 8-9 months later. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it's not.

In addition, return to play is not the same as healed. Athletes are always pushing the performance envelope and commonly return before the tissues are fully healed. While need for surgery is not a good sign, it is said not to involve the ACL (infection?), in which case the additional time off will actually give Dion a more fully healed ACL than he would have had otherwise.
"The process of turning any tendon graft into a ligament takes a minimum of 18 months," Dr. Chao wrote. Though Peterson was running wild through NFL defenses in 2012, his reconstructed ACL was nowhere near healed. In fact, even as he was bursting through linebackers and racing past safeties, his recovering knee still wasn't performing at pre-injury levels.
Are Players Rushing ACL Injury Recovery?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'd prefer Lewis the first half of the season. Super Bowls aren't what they used to be. Rather put up big stats early in the season.

Sincerely,
Colts fans

Controversial statement of the day:

If you had a 3rd and 20 and could throw a screen pass to Lewis or White, who do you choose?

Me: White

Is that based on their 3rd down conversion percentage, average yards per play or what would you be making that decision on?

In general terms, I feel Lewis is the more explosive athlete that can make an ordinary play get real dangerous for a defense real fast, but I don't have any stats right now to back it up.. you have me curious now though, so if you got some stats handy you could save me an awful lot of time lol

Not based on stats. I haven't dug that deep.

It just strikes me that whenever White gets the ball in space, he makes something happen. He reads the downfield blocking exceptionally well and always seems to get very good yardage.

Make no misake- Lewis is the superior player.

But just something about White in the open field.....

I don't have time to read through all 7 pages.

Can someone please just tell me......Is Lewis' career as a New England Patriot over?

Is it really realistic to think a guy the size of Lewis could ever play 16 games in a season and then 3 playoff games?

We have always needed a plan b for Lewis. I have faith in James white.

No. He will have a new procedure that will set him back 8-10 more weeks, so he still has a shot of contributing to our second half run.

Well crap... I guess Gaffney better get ready to compete for some starting snaps!
