Probably the most hilarious thread you'll read on any opposing team's message board

The Jets homer chiming in was pretty amusing.

Also liked the change in tone from "Super bowl wins are team stats" to talking about Brady losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl.

If you actually watch the game you see Ryan didn't play all that well.

First drive - gets a huge run to get to mid field. runs for a short gain, passes for a short gain then takes a sack on 3rd down. If he anticipates it right he could have converted but didn't.

Second drive - hand off 9 yards. short pass to FB left open. Hand off short run, hand off short run (3rd and 3 now). Sack. Actually this sack is understated as he kind of ran into it on a 3 man rush. Looking back he could have found a lot of open space running laterally to his right to buy more time and maybe then run.

Third drive - TD drive - He made a 20 yard pass to Jones but any other WR gets that ball knocked out. Logan Ryan actually got a hand on it but Jones had the strength to hang on to it. He didn't look for an open man and just forced it into Jones. He actually had a more open player in the middle and a RB screen option that was open. Next pass is better but to an open Sanu on the sideline. Still not a hard pass. run for 15 yards. run for 9 yards. run for a TD. On this drive Ryan made 2 throws. One to Jones which was really a 50/50 ball but Jones made the play and one to an Open Sanu on the sideline.

Forth drive - TD drive - First pass finds a guy open in the middle of the field for 25 off play action(Gabriel I think). He just had to hit him. No one under or around him within 5 yards. The next pass for 15 yards is pretty impressive. He makes it on the run to the sideline on fairly tight coverage. That is a solid throw no question. Hand off 1 yard. 50/50 ball to Hooper incomplete. Then he makes a good TD pass to Hooper against Chung. Hooper did push off and Chung fell cause of it at the very end but it was a good play. - So on this drive 1 very good pass and one pretty good pass.

Pats drive - pick 6 and pats drive.

half ends. On the whole Ryan imo this half had 1 very good pass and 1 good pass. Some questionable sacks and open throws and forced balls he didn't pay for.

Fifth drive - Run loss of 3. Open pass to the RB for 7. Forced the pass and it was incomplete. Not much to say here. Ryan had to unload it and no one seemed open. His RB would have been the better choice and could have tried to throw him open. So IMO he didn't make the best choice he could. Overall nothing overly impressive or unimpressive. He saw the blitz coming though and I would just think looking for your RB on a crossing route to get 6 yards seems to make sense but it is a minor nitpick to be honest.

Sixth drive - Opens for 20 yards. Finds Gabriel in the open part of a zone. He was not super wide open. Not particularly good but it was okay. A run for 5 yards then hits an open Gabriel for 30. He was pretty wide open here. This is the play he stepped on Butler's foot. Run for 1 yard. Ryan makes nice throw here to Sanu avoiding the rush. Better catch than throw but still a pretty good throw for 12. Run for 9 yards. Loss of 3 on a run. Throw incomplete but PI. Honestly I don't like the PI call a ton here and think the throw was a bad idea. Then the Wide open TD to Freeman. So he made 1 good throw on this drive.

Seventh drive - Starts with a failed onside kick. Ball at the 41. Throws to an open Hooper for 9. Hand off lost 1 yard but a holding penalty knocks them back so 2nd and 11 at the 42. You need at least 7 more yards here then you can ice the game most likely. Ryan almost gets sacked but avoids it He then misses on a throw that makes it hard to catch and is knocked out to go incomplete (he had open guys). Stands in the pocket too long and takes a sack. He had Hooper open on this play it seemed. Just a really bad sack when you need 6-7 yards.

Eighth drive - (up 28-12.. anything but a turnover here is fine you should think) run for 8. run for 0. Then the strip sack. Lets break it down. The pass rusher came from the front not the blindside. Hightower clearly looks like he plans to rush. Does Ryan call it out to his RB to be sure he is on the same page? nope. Does he see him at all even though he should? nope. The hit gets there right as he is about to throw and knocks it out. This is on Coleman and Ryan. Ryan needs to point out the odd spot Hightower is lining up to be sure he is taken care of and he needs to not be caught but surprise from a pass rush from the front. Taking a sack here would not be good but it be okay compared to what happened.

Ninth drive - Wide open pass to the RB for 39 yards. That looks great on a stat sheet but honestly is no show of skill. run for 2 yards. Pass to Jones for 20 on an amazing catch. I feel like I need to give Ryan a ton of credit for this one. I still don't know how Rowe missed the tip but he did and Jones makes a near inhuman catch. However with any other WR that would not have worked and it seemed needlessly risky but it worked so i must applaud. Right now you are at the 22. Don't go backwards. They run for minus 1 yard. Still fine. Now the much talked about 12 yard sack. Ryan just panicked here pure and simple. Complain of the call if you want but players need to know the situation. There is never an excuse for a 12 yard sack. Okay 4-5 yards.. fine. Once you know it won't work run to the line as much as you can but he panicked and went backwards. Then the holding (he hit a guy on that to be fair but he was wide open). Then incomplete. on the incomplete pass you need 10 yards to have a realistic try (53 in a dome seems doable). He potentially had Gabriel and Jones for 10 on that play but he missed Gabriel when he went to him.

Tenth drive - Yeah not much to talk about here to be honest. Just very safe.

So on the whole Ryan made a few good plays and 2 very good ones IMO but much of it was just not particularly hard and he made massive mistakes. Just cause you don't get picked doesn't mean you were good. I would say the stat sheet here looking back is very generous to Ryan and very ungenerous to Brady.

If I had to give Ryan an overall grade I'd say C+/B-. He didn't miss many throws and hit the open guys down the field so that is worth something. However the mistakes to plays ratio isn't good and more often it was the play makers making him look good than the other way around this game. So an above average starting QB performance but not by much

For those that don't care to wade through this Falcons Message Board mess, in summary:
  • Matt Ryan is great
  • Tom Brady is lucky
  • Julio Jones' catch was talent
  • Julian Edelman's catch was luck
  • Brady's pick-6 is proof of his mediocrity
  • Ryan's strip-sack and other sacks are not his fault
  • Atlanta lost due to injuries on the offensive line
  • Atlanta lost due to not running (behind same OL) despite 2 ypc in 2nd half
  • Atlanta lost due to bad luck
  • Stats that put Ryan in a positive light are meaningful
  • Stats that put Brady in a positive light are meaningless

I think that sums it up, did I forget anything?
How about everyone gets their turn on the Patriots/BB/Brady wheel of pain. They should just be thankful they only have to play us once every 4 years + any SBs they make.

Every competing team in the AFC, these last 16 years, has had the Patriots block them 1 way or another. Giants can laud the 2 SBs over us, but haven't really been relevant outside of those 2 games and Denver has done well too, but would their fans trade their post-season success for ours?

That Falcons fan defeats his own argument when he cites the stats. It's right here:

Ryan: 70 Attempts, 94 Completions vs. Brady: 93 Attempts, 142 Completions.

Brady completed more passes than he even attempted. Matt Ryan didn't come close to doing that.

Seriously, though, this was Ryan's 9th season. He's appeared in the playoffs 5 times, with 3 one and dones. The last time Atlanta was in the playoffs was 2012, where they were the #1 seed. In that postseason, they needed a late FG to beat the Seahawks and then lost to SF in the NFCCG. This year, Atlanta won their playoff games in a lot more convincing fashion and built a big lead in the SB before losing it and the game.

I also liked this line:

What hurt me more than anything was after the overtime coin toss won by Patriots was watching Ryan on the sideline unable to do anything to get back in the game.

Ryan did have a chance to do something at the end of regulation. We've seen a QB direct a drive for a SB-winning FG late in the 4th quarter before. The league MVP (especially one who is superior to Brady in the playoffs) leading the top scoring offense in the league with an all-pro talent like Julio Jones should also be able to also, or at least come close. Instead, Atlanta handled that drive like it was a tribute to Andy Reid's clock management, only picked up 1 first down and had to punt the ball back with 11 seconds left. Ryan and the Falcons had their chances and they blew it.

Weight against a pick 6 that would have sunk the season of any quarterback not named Tom Brady?
The point I was making is that while the interception was in the stats that were being used to compare Ryan and TB12, fumbles were not.

I'm gonna give them a pass. That game had to be traumatizing.

At least with the Helmet Catch it was just some fluke ****/great play by the other team.

In this game they had the ball at our 22 with like, 4:40 left. 3 kneel downs and a FG and they're up by 11 and we've got probably under 3 minutes left. As close to being in the bag as you could imagine.

Instead they run and lose two, hike the ball with time still on the clock, get sacked, then hike it again with time on the clock and get a holding penalty.

Honestly, every time I rewatch the 2nd half I do that thing where part of me forgets the game is already decided and I feel this odd prick of dread when Julio makes that catch. They were so close to victory.

Sad.
And kind of embarrassing.
I hope the poster gets over it...otherwise he's going to be miserable for a long time.

Don't forget you are talking about a fanbase that considers going to the SB a gigantic success. Wish we had modest standards like that..

BREAKING FAKE NEWS: HC Dan Quinn tells Matt Ryan to double Brady's production to win SB 52 (56 TDs, 2 INTs)
Can we not be goddamn ridiculous here?

It'd be four interceptions.

Can we not be goddamn ridiculous here?

It'd be four interceptions.

So you were looking for a different level of absurdity.

I should have added Ryan does all of that in 8 - not 12 regular season games.

What was worse to you, the way the Pats' 05 season ended, or the way the 06 season ended?

I should have specified that I was talking about our last two SB victims.

If Matt Ryan just did what TB did in that SB they would all be doing back flips, Matty stones, Matty ice, Matty unstoppable etc...

Call when he has 25+ more post season appearances and he's missing key guys like Julio and the team is ravaged with injuries on many occasions.

I should have specified that I was talking about our last two SB victims.
I know, just saying we've been through pretty much the situations you mentioned.... just not in the super bowl. I would say that the Peyton comeback in 07 was harder to take than the Bailey interception in 06.

To bring it full circle, I think the falcons fans should be feeling worse.
