Probably the most hilarious thread you'll read on any opposing team's message board

BTW, Jake Delhomme did better against the Pats than Ryan did

Absolutely. But when we're one play away at several points of the game, from the story of the Superbowl being about the epic failure of the New England Patriots over the first 2 1/2 quarters, I think it pays to be a little humble. And maybe a little understanding when fans of the other team brag up their team's performance a bit.

I don't understand it at all. If it had been the Patriots up 28-3 and then blew that lead, I wouldn't brag about any aspect of the team's performance.

You don't see any Patriots fans bragging about almost winning SB 42 & 46 and holding late leads in those games.

Are the Falcons today's version of the 2000's Colts?

Thanks for being the moral compass.....at least we know why you're here.

Of course not. Because we're used to winning. Our high water mark is a lot higher than theirs is. I remember having this disucssion on a Boston Bruins forum in 08 when the 8 seed Bruins took the 1 seed Habs to 7 games in the 08 ECF semis that season, a lot of Bruins fans thought it was a good sign for the future, and so we bragged about it and Habs fans laughed at us over it. Because they were used to winning and we were the braggadocious upstarts. Then when the Bruins won in 11, they started bragging the same thing, they'd taken us to overtime in game 7 in the semis and gave us the best run for our money we'd had that postseason, and we were the ones laughing.

It's just part of the sports fan life cycle. Fans of smalltime teams or teams on the downswing gather their celebrations wherever they can, and fans of established bigtime perennial contenders laugh at them over it. How you feel about it kind of depends on where your team is on the cycle.

Aw, darn. I just made a critical blunder: I actually read the post this thread is referring to instead of just the incendiary headline.

It turns out that the Atlanta fan doesn't say that his team should have won or that Brady sucks or anything of the sort. He says "I have to give a huge shout out to Matt Ryan" and tries to give some context to Ryan's accomplishments despite the loss.

Not the fans fault. they just don't have that much experience with playoff football.

Every game starts at 0-0 and you don't get a set amount based on style points from the previous game or games.

I'm assuming you missed the part where he makes the hilarious claim that Matt Ryan's 2016 postseason was better than any postseason Brady (the 5 time SB champ and 4 time SB MVP) has ever had.

Ryan played better in 2016 Playoffs than Tom Brady has ever played in playoffs

Poor little guys are having such a difficult time dealing with that devastating loss and are so delusional, that they have to resort to such silliness.
For those that don't care to wade through this Falcons Message Board mess, in summary:
  • Matt Ryan is great
  • Tom Brady is lucky
  • Julio Jones' catch was talent
  • Julian Edelman's catch was luck
  • Brady's pick-6 is proof of his mediocrity
  • Ryan's strip-sack and other sacks are not his fault
  • Atlanta lost due to injuries on the offensive line
  • Atlanta lost due to not running (behind same OL) despite 2 ypc in 2nd half
  • Atlanta lost due to bad luck
  • Stats that put Ryan in a positive light are meaningful
  • Stats that put Brady in a positive light are meaningless

I think that sums it up, did I forget anything?

Actually, yes. You forgot the most important part of that thread:

I thought those Atlanta fans were fine. The few Atlanta fans that I ran into here at Patsfans were also very respectable, before and after the game.

I wonder what's worse, losing on a big comeback or on a INT at the goal line?
What was worse to you, the way the Pats' 05 season ended, or the way the 06 season ended?

Matt Ryan made two of the worst plays any player has ever made when trying to defend a 4th quarter lead in the Super Bowl.

Mmm. Except if you are a Matt Ryan fan, you blame Freeman for failing to pick up Hightower on the strip sack, and pointing out that it was the holding call that ACTUALLY took the Falcons out of field goal range, Matt holding the ball too long and taking the sack rather than grounding the football cost the Falcons yards, but they were still in field goal range until the holding call.

Matt Ryan's decision making didn't help either situation, but his mistakes weren't the ones that really cost the Falcons opportunities to put the game away. That said his decisions made the situation worse rather than rising above his teammates' mistakes and carrying the team like Brady was doing, so it still marks the huge difference between the two men.

I reall do think though that Matty Ice will eventually come down with a Superbowl ring. It would be shocking to me if a guy that talented just never made it at all.

Yes, I actually saw that thread and posted elsewhere but that game is the perfect example of how stats can be misleading. Ryan had the chance to win the game and he did not come through. Brady had the same chance (even less actually) and came through. I remember making the same argument that in 1986-87 divisional game, that Eason outplayed Elway. But in reality, it was not even close. Elway made the plays when he needed to and won the game.

I saw that thread. Matt Ryan was great, until he absolutely needed to be. There's more to being a great QB than just filling up the stat sheet. Its not always just about the plays you make. Sometimes its when you make them. Same goes for mistakes. Matt Ryan made the biggest mistakes in the game at the most pivotal time in the game. Brady made every throw he needed to when he couldn't afford another mistake. There's your difference. One QB got better in crunch time and the other faded.

If Amendola doesn't get that extra half inch and squeak into the endzone on the 2 point conversion, threads like that would appear here, and be laughed at by the 5 diehard Atlanta fans in their forum.

I love how you spelled your forum name "Simpelton," great use of sly humor there!
