Postgame thread: Patriots defeat Panthers 10 - 3

I find it baffling that Meyers would give up on a route with Brady in the game. He almost looked intimidated being with the 1s.

Yeah, I thought he showed that he's not ready to run with big dogs. But, along the lines of what you're saying, I think it's fair for those of us on the outside to wonder if that was more a case of first time jitters or him having at least momentarily gotten in over his head.

What'd he say about it? It just looked like Meyers turned around and didn't realize the ball was coming to him or just couldn't locate it as opposed to giving up on the route like Zo and Socci insinuated
Meyers himself said he quit on the route.

Just a few thoughts on this game.

1. When you consider how the Pats did you have to consider the competition. I don't know how the Panthers are going to do this year but I do know that they have a very good OL and a very good front 7. So everything we saw tonight has to be taken with that context in mind/

In this game, for the most part only the first half counted as the 2nd half was primarily a back up game.

2. Really glad the first team O got a significant number of snaps because they played like they hadn't played this preseason. AGAIN the only thing that was stopping the Pats in the first quarter....were the Pats penalties. There are no first and 28 plays. It kind of sucks that you run 3 plays, gain 25 yard and have to punt.

3. I don't think there is any doubt now that Jacobi Meyers is the back up slot guy for the Pats this season. This might have been a step back for him, especially the 0-3 with Brady, but as a rookie you need to undergo painful lessons in order to progress.

The plus part of this game for him was how he bounced back the rest of the game. Clearly he has some chemistry with Stidham. Unfortunately he needs to have it with Brady if he's getting off the bench.

IMHO, Meyers will make the team, but I don't see him being a big factor early on.

4. A great catch by Izzo on a BB from Brady. That's a make the roster kind of a catch. He's got a job as the 2nd TE. Who's going to be the top guy while Watson is on the sidelines

5. Nice job in pass protection by the first OL. They kept Brady fairly clean. I think he only got hit twice in 12 throws. Again, against a good DL. Wynn missed a block on a screen, but again he was flawless in his pass protection. Remember this is a D that has led the league in sacks for the last few years, and they barely got a whiff of Brady.

6. I hope this game ends the "Dorsett has to go" chants we've heard so often the last few weeks.

7. Eric Reid's hit on Watson was really bad. It is more deserving of suspension that whatever Chung has done. Easily it should be a serious fine. I think that will be the last we see of Ben until October.

8. Awesome job on defense AGAIN. Lucky miss on KVN's injury. It didn't look good early. I have never seen a Pats D more active and position-ally fluid as we've seen thus far. Remember it can only be that way because the secondary is even more awesome.

9. THRILLLED to see the 2 challenges by Rivera get denied. I only wish the penalty for throwing a flag on a ticky tack call be more than just losing a TO.

10. Getting more and more impressed with Williams as a CB. Looks tough against the run as well. Good tackler.

11. Stidham had an up and down night. I really like his poise and toughness. He's a really good prospect. But if Brady went down for 3 or 4 games, I think I'd rather have Hoyer out there.

12. I'm not taking the fact Hoyer didn't play as meaning much. He'll get the first half next week. The Pats gave Stidhaam a good run. He needs the reps. If Bill were really thinking that he's not going to go with 3 QB's,, he'd have at least give Hoyer a chance to compete for his job. I choose to believe that they know what they got in Hoyer, and Stidham needed the reps more than he did.

13. Bradon King's injury might create a spot for the Munson kid. He's a good football player.

14. Gunner's PR's were an eyeopener. I don't think you can afford to keep a PR specialist this year. I only hope this game doesn't put him on some other team's radar. He needs to be on this PS to get the reps he needs to become an NFL WR. I think he has the talent to do it, but he needs time.

I'm summarizing, not quoting, so remember that if someone attacks my wording:

Meyers quit on the route. It's something that happens with some college systems, but no routes are dead on this team. He'll (Meyers) figure that out and everything will be fine on those sorts of plays in the future.

Nice game for Stidham. Earned the three game role and looked good. Story of the game.

Another good show from Meyers. Seven more catches. Clearly the top receiver in preseason. Can’t ask any more from an undrafted rookie.

Ton of ugly penalties. Third straight game. What’s going on?

Sony Michel looked sharp and elusive. But only 36 yards on 10 carries.
Rex Burkhead two carries for three yards. That could at least slide him onto the bubble.
Really nice athletic catch for Izzo. Great to see. Watson looked like he got concussed on that dirty play. Could miss three or four games...
However offense doesn’t really look electric. Going to be some low scoring games this year.

Defense looks stacked. Tough cuts ahead. Depth at all three levels.

Watch out Hoyer. Stidhim is handsome and we all know NE loves signing models ;)

I know this is a terrible thing to say, but...a couple of times the tv showed a shot of Stidham's face in his helmet and I gave a start, certain it was Mark Sanchez. <shudder>

Several short yardage runs, plus his biggest play got called back due to a borderline hold. This is definitely a situation where the eye test > stats.

Yeah yeah it’s only preseason, but this Defense looks legit.

I could care less that the Pats won or lost this game...all I worry about is injuries. We got a few guys banged up in this shytshow preseason exhibition...and Ron Rivera is a giant vage BTW.

think he makes the team?

Do you have any sources or details? All I can find is general mentions like "all-conference special teams" and can't tell if that refers to more than his punt return prowess.
Gunner is a sneaky sleeper to make the roster over Berrios. I don’t think he’s taken any reps at corner this preseason, but perhaps his experience as a corner and his position versatility adds to his value in Belichicks eyes.

Return guy, 5th string WR, emergency Cornerback.

I think that there's a clear group at WR, and the question is going to be how deep BB decides to go at the position. I don't think there's any question about which 4 receivers are the best right now (Edelman, Gordon, Thomas (if), Dorsett), but Harry's a lock as a first rounder, and Meyers has impressed against the backups.

If they go with 6 WRs, Meyers is in. If they go with 5, I'd have to be guessing at BB's mindset about youth and potential with regards to Thomas/Dorsett/Meyers.

regular season can't get here fast enough...

9/8, Pixburgh, right?

Give me a shutout then, and we can start getting turnt :D

At TE, Watson is taking a 4 game vacation, and will not count against the roster at the start. I don't think any other TE has played his way onto the roster as a pass-catching TE, and I think that makes the numbers issue very interesting.

I think coaches are just challenging it to have an idea of how this is going to proceed in the regular season - using the preseason as a preseason on the officials as well.

My thoughts.

Myers had a bad night but should still make the team. He isn't ready to play top CBs but he isn't far off. It isn't uncommon for rookie WRs to not be ready to play the 1s this early. I think Harry would be but that is why he went it round 1. Most guys take a year or at least a number of games into their first year before they finally put it together against the ones.

Burkhead has been a guy I considered uncuttable due to his contract. I'm not so sure anymore. Bolden has outplayed Burkhead from the RB position. In fact it could be argued Burkhead is the worst RB on the roster. He has experience and won't screw up but that may not be enough I think they may seriously consider cutting him.

Cowart is making this team. He hasn't been out there much but he has done it multiple times vs starters and has been one of our best DT pass rushers. Pennel may actually be in jeopardy. I didn't want to believe it but it can't be a coincidence at this point and Cowart just isn't cuttable anymore. Someone has to go from the DT spot.

Carrying 8 OL will be tough. Froholdt hasn't looked ready and I worry about going thin there with as unreliable as he has been. Still I think they have to.

Munson should make this team over Roberts. He fits better with what we do now. Also the same could be said for a guy like Wise. He doesn't fit this team nearly as well but he is too valuable to cut.

I'd say it's at least somewhat the former. All the reports I've seen are that he's been able to beat just about anybody he's been up against in practice. I think it's fair to give him a little time. Of course Lard Ass Beetle and Big Jim Murry say it's betwen him and Gunner for the last spot on the team and they're pretty sure he blew it tonight. Also, Stidham has regressed with every game and clearly they'd better keep Hoyer.
