Post Game Thread - Pats vs Jags

Here! Here!
The main difference between the Jaguars and the Patriots is that they have much
better players on defense. The Patriots have Flowers and Gilmore and the Jaguars
have 6 Probowl players.

As such a long time poster, you'd think you'd remember that Pro-bowl is nothing but a popularity contest. It doesn't mean squat. Especially with so many people bowing out every year. Now, if you were talking ALL-PROs, they had 2 on defense. Calais Campbell and Jalen Ramsey. Only Ramsey is homegrown. And Ramsey was the 5th over-all choice in 2016.

What's the average position that the Jaguars have drafted from 2012 - 2017? 4,5,3,3,2
What's the average position that the Patriots have drafted from 2012-2017? 32, 29, 32, 29, 28

Then take into consideration that the league stole their 2017 1st round pick as part of the DeflateGate witchhunt and it becomes more obvious.

No that is smart football given the score and amount of time on the clock (with 3 TOs).

There was 8:01 left to play and the defense had already given up an 8 minute drive to start the half. You don't give the JAX offense the chance to have another long drive on your defense that has already spent a ton of time on the field..

After a loss like that.... My silver lining is getting slightly less invested in this season so I can get some other things done.. lol

You’re a clown. No sh*t the jaguars have one of the best defenses in the league. I am not asking for a super defense but an average one. This defense is dreadful. He goes out there and gets a guy like clayborn who got half his sacks against the cowboys.

You're the clown. Not Charlotte Pats fan. You still don't know jack about the game of football. Numerous experienced posters have told you the same thing. Yet you're still inundating us with your incessant garbage.

Because it's not encroachment. For it to be encroachment, the defensive player has to touch the offensive player. It should have been called as a Neutral Zone Infraction with an automatic first down.
No, it shouldn't have been called as a NZI or as anything.

If the defender gets back onsides before the snap without any contact with an offensive player or the OLmen nearest him breaking their stance there's no penalty. The ref made the correct call.

All that NE needed to do to pick up that first down was SNAP THE EFFIN BALL or just have the OLman opposite that defender (King, I think) touch him or move out of his stance. That's it.

Like I said upstream, I bet the ref was reaching for his flag because he expected NE to do the TOTALLY OBVIOUS AND EXPECTED thing of snapping or flinching to draw the flag, but NE inexplicably did neither and so he (rightly!) kept the flag in his pocket.

Rams.

Talib. Peters. Donald. Suh.

I’d take one. Probably not Suh.

Gurley. Cooks.

Talib - 1 year deal.
Peters - 1 year deal for low money
Goff is still on his rookie contract.
Gurley signed a contract extension, lowering his cap hit.
Cooks signed an extension lowering his cap hit.

They also traded Alec Ogeltree who carried a large cap hit.

the Rams have 27 guys making less than $1M

Patriots have 20 guys making less than $1M.

This was the Jaguars Superbowl and they played like it. Credit to Bortles never thought I'd see him have a game like that specially against a Belichick defense. Bortles won that game how weird is that to say

Hey! What did I miss? Couldn't watch today.

Regards,
Chris
Pretty bad dawg. Defense played liked they did in Superbowl 52. Couldn't get off the field in critical 3rd downs and Bortles was perfect today

Tell that to Mike Vrabel who got called for NZI for doing the exact same thing.

Interesting to see how they do the rest of the year. They will be in games because of that defense.

Specific schemes aside, as a general matter, this team, for the past several seasons, seems too timid and passive coming into big games. When they encounter well-coached teams with a chip on their shoulder (like JAX) they seem to mentally and psychologically crumble a bit. This is reflected in their play-calling and demeanor. When they do mentally 'check in' it's often too late.

They need to do a better job of getting mentally and psychologically prepared for the challenge, matching their opponents intensity and setting a strong tone from the outset. Too often they take the first punch and play off their back foot for the better part of the game, which has a trickle down effect for the remainder of the contest.

The defense has an apparent inability to effectively play zone coverage. Anytime they play zone, there appears to be a lack of communication and cohesiveness amongst those in coverage.

When we look back at what lost this game we'll point towards leaving points on the field in the red zone as a result of poor play calling, combined with the decision (or lack thereof) to go for it on 4th down midway through the 4th quarter.

A few other observations ...

J. Jones need to see the field more. He's darn good.

Flowers is extremely important to this defense.

Gilmore is damn good. Great signing.

James White should not carry the ball often. His only utility is as a pass-catcher and pass-blocker. He goes down in a stiff wind running the ball.

I'd like to see Karras get a look over Andrews. He has looked good in his limited time and is bigger and stronger than Andrews, who routinely gets overpowered.

QM's correct, that's the rule.

That said, the fact that this happened with the Titans (and it did) speaks to the fact that I think we're at an all-time low when it comes to officiating.

Not just referees throwing bad flags - but referees not actually knowing the rules. Jerome Boger and crew doing the KC/Pitt game today was an absolute embarrassment.

I know. Had it on gamecast radio until the Brady fumble when I had to head out. Had a very Steelers 2004 Halloween loss kind of feel. Lots of football after left after that game then and today's game now.

Chris

I've been a Devin defender but he looks slow out there and so does Hightower. I'm shocked McCourty hasn't been asked to take a paycut as he's being paid like a top flight safety when he isn't anymore (Earl Thomas who wants a new contract makes less than him). Also despite losing their left tackle no one could breath on Bortles. And everytime Clayborn rushed he allowed an escape valve for Bortles to slip out for yet another first down. I hope we never acquire another Philly cornerback because the last two experiences have been awful. J.C. Jackson and Crossen need to see the field. I can't believe I'm saying this but Duke Dawson might have to be an integral part to this team.

Can duke dawson get on the field first? I hope he’s not another waste of a second round pick. Also what’s the deal with rivers? Why isn’t he active?

I still don’t understand why the LB situation wasn’t addressed as much. Hightower looks like broken glass from all the nicks throughout the years.

The offense isnt an issue. it will get better . usually does. Defensively, the staff will coach them up and they wont be as bad as today. Unfortunately , at in opportune times they are suspect to playing like this on 3rd down for years now. We just keep masking it with the offense and talking about PPG, or pees or patricia etc etc. They are really arent very different in most cases.
I know a lot of factors cost us the game but for me the LOS was dominated by jax and our 3rd down defense cost us the game.

The funny thing is that the pats will face better wrs corps than the one they faced today. If i am an opposing coach i am trying to get my running backs in space in the passing game against these slow LBs.
