Therefore, it's not terribly surprising that the top five payouts were:

1. DT Chris Jones $232K
2. DT Joe Vellano $203K
3. CB Alfonzo Dennard $159K
4. WR Kenbrell Thompkins $154K
5. C Ryan Wendell $147K

Everyone who took a snap for the Patriots during the regular season in 2013 (even released players like Zach Sudfeld) gets a cut. Players who spent the entire season on IR don't (ditto for Ryan Mallett ).

How does Zach Sudfeld get $$12,947.42? Good for the low salary guys getting some money, Devlin got $98,695.44 and for Jones and Vellano that's about half again of their total salary for the year.
