Patterson as running back

Patterson is not a running back. At best he's a guy who you can use to ambush another team with a surprise carry. He's strong and quick, and I've loved his ability to run after the catch, but being a regular rotation at running back is a whole nother animal than outsmarting the secondary to add another 4-5 yards to a catch, which is where Patterson's strength lies

Honestly if I wanted to convert one Pats receiver into a RB my first choice is Julian Edelman. He has the mentality, attitude and physical strength to play a role similar to the one James White currently plays.

I agree with you that Edelman would very likely be a very fine temporary solution at RB (heck, he was extremely effective as a running QB in college), but no, no, no!

Edelman is simply too valuable to the Patriots as a wide receiver. I hate even seeing him returning punts, I certainly don't want to get him beat up at running back.

So: I'll endorse your idea as long as we wait until the second half of the Super Bowl to unleash it.

It still won’t work full time. And it worked a lot less in the 2nd half when GB adjusted.

But it can still do damage when NE catches the defense in a bad matchup against it and then goes no-huddle so the D can’t switch out of it.

Patterson doesn't run wll between the tackles, but toss him the ball on a sweep and hes explosive. Last night he looked like he was shot out of a cannon, he ran with speed and power.

Patterson needs a tear-away short. Being tackled by pulling on a shirt shouldn't happen.

I was wrong. We now have 2 RB's. We'll have more if and when Michel and/or Bulkhead are anywhere near 100%. But that is an issue for after the bye. For now, we have our 2 running backs.

He doesn't (yet) run consistently well between the tackles. Once he gets going up the middle for a yard or so beyond the LoS, though, he's a big, strong, violent runner who's tough to bring down.

IIRC, tear-away jerseys were outlawed by the NFL some time ago.

Watch - now that everyone appears to be accepting Patterson as a legit RB, he won't see a snap in the backfield against the Titans and Barner will have a career day, a la Jonas Gray.

What impresses me is that he has not fumbled the ball as a RB and he has taken some good hits.

His running sort of turned me around a bit on him: I didn't expect to see that kind of power and explosion behind Devlin, and he seemed sure-handed (other than the fumble at the goal line). He actually seemed like a semi-credible running back threat, possibly between the tackles with better reads.

The interesting thing is that I don't think he was intended to be a significant part of the game plan. He obviously came in when White tweaked his knee in the 2Q and I wonder if that insane drive that he carried on his back down the field made McDaniels switch around the carry load in the second half. Just speculating.

(Although I know he said he asked for 25 carries, and other players said he worked very hard this week, so maybe Belchick's comment that Buffalo was a "unique game" was more Hoodie subterfuge, and CP was part of the plan all along....)

He showed me more than I thought I'd see from him. He basically carried the team downfield for the bulk of one drive until White could get back in there. And I loved the fact that he took a guy with him on one of his runs.

One thing Patterson has definitely impressed me with, he's got a lot of determination and heart out there it's matched with more strength than I thought he had. He's made himself into a keeper as a jack of all trades depth guy, so from that perspective, mission accomplished, he'll probably add a few million to his account in the long run as a result of this experiment, and good for him.

True.. he can probly learn more of the running back craft. Work on protecting himself and the ball. Still gotta be free to fly tho. I like the way he pounded his chest in the end zone.. he wants the ball and knows he can pound on a defense.

Oh by the way -- Patterson's success is also a testament to just how excellent #46 is. Every time I've seen a successful Patterson run, he was running behind the fullback. Not to say Patterson doesn't show a surprising competence as a RB because he does, but James Develin deserves a tip o' the cap for Patterson's success last Sunday because he opened a lot of the gaps that Patterson exploited..

Basically, it comes down to mcD and how much of the game plan will be a run heavy Patterson package.. we didn't see the play action but CP did catch a check down from Brady... It will only get better.
