Howe just did a Twitter Q&A, which is worth checking out. I know Bentley has made some plays, but this is the strongest opinion I’ve seen on him so far:

Maybe Bentley just needed a really long time to recover from that old injury. He was a legitimately great player as a rookie in a small sample size before he got hurt.

I think he was way too heavy as a rookie and in 2019. He was 260ish as a rook and last year he was mid/low 250s. Thought I read hes now high 240s which I assume has helped with his speed and agility.

over the middle, at the numbers, at the boundaries, down the field... Meyers has so far been better (in real games) at getting open all over planet Earth, relative to Harry

That's his game. Harry is a big body receiver who should be rock solid in the red area. I believe missing half of a season his rookie year and playing with a QB who runs it in at the goal line were significant reasons as to why Harry hasn't seen much action. In 2019, the target split was 41/24 in Meyers's favor and in 2020 it was 81/57 as well. 122/81 over two seasons.

Last year, Harry seemed to get dinged coming out of the BYE week and did nothing in the Niners, @Bills, and @Jets games.

I don't question that Meyers has been by far the better player, but I am saying...let's see what Harry can do before we write him off completely.

On this subject, if I can go to bat for Chris2223, I would argue it would be boring to marry someone who is a clone of yourself, real life usually isn't like TV where you find a soul mate that agrees you on every little thing. I fortunately don't have the problem with my wife being an anti-vaxer (admittedly, if she was a fanatical anti-science conspiracy theorist she probably wouldn't have married a university professor), but I have in laws who I love very, very much and who I actually respect very much in many, many ways who are anti-vaxers. I admit I can't understand it, but it isn't a show stopper for me, I don't require everyone to agree with me (that would also be boring).
Not taking the vaccine has nothing to do with conspiracy theories or anti-science. The Scientist that invented the mRNA technology even claims that it shouldn't be used the way they are doing it.
I have already had it. I have antibodies that are far superior to any vaccine. That is science. Especially when the mRNA "vaccine" does not prevent you from contracting or spreading the virus.

Accumulated 7/7's and 11/11's through camp...

Cam Newton: 61/103 (59%), 5 INTs, 5 drops
Mac Jones: 78/128 (61%), 2 INTs, 6 drops

This isn't nothing. We're talking a ROOKIE vs. a 10-year vet. Mac should have double the INT's and over 10% less completions. Isn't that what we've all been told to expect with rookie QB's? If Brady was here, Mac would be getting 1/4 of the snaps. This isn't normal stuff for a clear starter vs. development guy. This is a legit QB competition.

Absolutely...Cam is a 10 year vet that should be killing it...but he's not. In fact Mac is having a better camp at this point...arguably.

I agree. That is a media created thing. Seriously, if Mac Jones cannot mentally handle playing against Brady in week 4 (even if the Pats get blown out), he isn't our QB of the future. This is playing against the guy he will be replacing, not playing in a Super Bowl in his first month of his NFL career.

I am not sure Belichick will be starting Mac right out of the gate even if he is clearly the Pats' best QB. But I seriously doubt it has anything to do with Brady coming to town week 4. In fact, Belichick might see that as a good test of Mac's mental toughness to play vs. Brady. Belichick might want Jones to watch games from the sidelines to see the speed of the game before he gets started and shadow McDaniels to see how a game is called during an NFL game to get him acclimated to the difference from the college game. But that would be why Belichick might wait a month to start Jones, not because he is afraid to start Jones vs. Brady and mentally damage him some way.

If anything about Tampa, I might think Belichick might be concerned about Jones playing against a great Bucs defense (based how they played down the stretch and in the playoffs last year) than vs. Brady.
Yeah there's no reason to baby Mac, I'm sure he can handle it. Why not put him up against the champs and maybe the best team in football this year as well - what better measuring stick is there?

The Bucs defense is (or at least was last year) lethal against the run and it feels to me that Cam is not the guy you want facing that defense.

I am tempted to walk out on a medium length limb and say it may only be one or two more practices, if things continue to go this way, that it clearly becomes Mac's job. Barring injury of course. Now I don't expect BB to come out and announce it any time soon. But the extra reps and the results speak for themselves.

Mac is in the drivers seat right now.

And as I said back sometime just after the draft, I think if his attitude is right and he accepts the backup role, there will be a special package for Cam. No reason not to use that threat in certain situations. I know the media is now starting to discuss it, but it seemed pretty obvious, to me at least that a New Orleans style QB platoon, could be very beneficial to this team.

There are a ton of combinations that can come of a Mac and Cam combo. Imagine Cam lined up in the backfield or split ot as a TE. If executed it could be nearly impossible to scheme for all the possibilities of them on the field at the same time. Not to mention just Cam coming in at QB in short yardage/goaline situations.

If Dugger breaks out, Pats easily have the best secondary in the NFL and it's not close.

Over the last two days, Jones has taken 52 snaps in 11-on-11 team drills while Newton has taken 29.
Significant or just par for the course?

I’d argue that Cam need the reps as much as Mac! The fact that he doesn’t look much better than a rookie QB in his first TC is pretty concerning!

Hmmmm, just reading between the Lines, but ……

could it possibly be that media is just creating a controversy out of apples vs oranges comparison…
Jones went 15-for-19 in full-team drills. Removing that series, the rookie was 10-for-14. Newton, meanwhile, finished the day 5-for-11 and was just 2-of-6 when the final period began.
…..
Newton wasn’t given much to do. Before his final two-minute drill, just six of the veteran’s 20 11-on-11 reps were passing plays.

It seems like the two might be getting similar nbr of reps, just the media is ONLY COUNTING PASS PLAYS.

well could it just be that McDaniels is giving our RPO QB more run plays to practice than the traditional drop-back qb? But total nr of plays is same. ???

maybe some actual witnesses could clear up what appears like some flakey counting /comparison to me.

We're doing this?

What drove me crazy about him last year weren’t his awful throws, but standing around in the pocket for a week before getting sacked.

So I'll close with the same question I opened with - what is the reason why it's better to use limited salary cap space for a "#1 WR" nowadays and how (without hindsight) can one know beyond a shadow of a doubt that WR "is"/"will be" a consistent #1?
You can argue about a certain number here, or a certain number there, but they're meaningless without context. Here's the reality:

Adams in Green Bay - Last two NFCCGs
Evans in Tampa - Last NFCCG
Brown in Tennessee - One of last two AFCCGs
Diggs in Buffalo - Last AFCCG
Hill in K.C. - Last two AFCCGs

In other words, only one of the last 8 teams to make a conference championship has done it without a legitimate high end WR. And that one team was a 49ers team with Kittle (TE), Samuel and Sanders.

If Dugger breaks out, Pats easily have the best secondary in the NFL and it's not close.
Assuming that Gilmore plays, which I am expecting but still…

It always bothers be that folks trying to guess the final 53 never account for injuries. They always happen. It might be more useful to consider the final 56 or something because a few are going to get dinged in preseason or practice. To be able to cut someone from a position group that faced no injuries is a privilege.
