Patriots sign WR Jordan Matthews to a 1 Year Deal

Hard to get a good market read on Matthews, particularly on a longer term multi year deal.

Come 2019, he could seriously be anywhere from jag camp fodder to demanding a 10+ million dollar deal. It will all depend whether or not he can produce in the fall.

Does he have the legs to create separation anymore?

Not sure he makes it out of training camp!

from Reiss:

Reviewing parts of the 2015 Patriots-Eagles game, when Matthews had a 10-yard touchdown catch, I could have made the case that he was as much of a “move tight end” as a receiver. Wearing No. 81, he reminded me a little bit of former Patriots tight end Tim Wright (also No. 81) in terms of being almost a cross between receiver and tight end.

Is Reiss trying to make me hate the signing?

I always liked Matthews, if he can stay healthy, he can make a difference. Looks like we are going big and fast instead of small and fast. Patterson 6’3 runs a 4.42, Matthews is 6’3” runs a 4.46, Britt is 6’3” (not sure what he runs).

At this point, I can’t see the Pats drafting a WR this year. Edelman, Hogan, Mitchell, Dorsett, Britt, Matthews. Add in practice squad receivers McCarron and Hollister fighting for a roster spot. Very deep at WR. Sure, some question marks injuries wise, but camp is gonna be so competitive at the WR spot. I want DaeSean Hamilton from Penn State, probably a perfect Edelman replacement in a few years. But I can’t see them drafting a WR.

Looking at the ages of the only two proven WRs on the roster (Edelman and Hogan) and the contract situation of some of the others I fully expect the Pats to draft WRs.

Britt, Dorsett, Matthews and Patterson are all on their final year. It is entirely possible that only one of those 4 even makes it through camp as there are no big repercussions for cutting any of those players.

He is alot slower than Cooks

He will have a different role than Cooks had. He is much more physical and not afraid to go through the middle than Cooks. He is closer to E. Sanders than any outside receiver from what I have seen.

He's been pretty bad his whole career but I guess we're in full spin mode again at Patsfans dot com because the Patriots threw a dart at a guy who may or may not make the team.

Seems pretty clear that BB won't draft a WR in this draft, at least early on. I would prefer to use the first two picks on defense or LT.

Based on his horrible track record with them in the Second... I sure hope so.

Who’s been pretty bad his whole career? Matthews?
Through the first 3 years he averaged 75 catches, about 900 yards, and 6 touchdowns per season.

Unfortunately for him, he had a down year last year playing injured and missing 6 games with multiple injuries in Buffalo’s offense with Tyrod Taylor as his QB.

I mean if he is pretty bad then I am curious what you say about the other garbage WRs that don't average 900yd seasons when they are fully healthy. He is by no stretch guaranteed a roster spot on the team but he is also not "pretty bad". That is hyperbole..
