Player Signing Patriots Showing Serious Interest in JuJu Smith-Schuster (Update: Done)

Someone just said Jakobi Meyers is better at beating press and gaining separation
Is there just no integrity left in the world?
I know it's your job to just carry the water of whatever move it is Bill makes, but that's my evaluation of the player after watching about 45 min of film of a couple of his games from last year. Thought he struggled a bit versus man and a lot of his big plays came either after receiving a ball in traffic, surviving a big hit (which Meyers never seemed to do) and finding space, or getting open after Mahomes drifted back in the pocket and did his little song and dance for about 7 seconds. Thought he was much better vs. zone and showed a surprising aptitude at those little whip routes Edelman loved to run, but especially when lined up outside I didn't think he had the suddenness and explosiveness to win consistently against man coverage, more of a back shoulder fade, positioning type receiver at the perimeter.

You're free to disagree with this analysis, I'm not a professional scout after all but even if an honest appraisal of a guy I think is of a similar level of the one they let go is worthy of this type of empty snark I just hope you're making money of this little character you play here.

Which games. And which plays did you identify as man coverage and see him
“struggle”
The comment is because no matter what they do or who they sign you will throw water in it. It’s like clockwork if the Patriots do anything here you come to criticize it, and this was kind of an obvious example of just making up a reason.
If you would like to show me those examples of Meyers owning man coverage and dominating separation go ahead. I’d imagine I would find you among the people who complained “our reCeeVerZz coUlDnt gEt AnY SePAratIon” when Meyers was out there.

Why not? They structured an 11 mill per year 3 year deal with only 15% of the hit in year 1. That is textbook maximizing this years cap by taking advantage of excess future cap available
in this case yeah
but overall they resigned their own guys and replaced the losses with almost the same tier players
--> ergo this is not an improvement, maybe Juju is a slight improvement but overall the offense and defense have not got better so far and quit some top players are gone

Changes to last season:

QB: same
RB: Harris out (so far), Robinson in --> equal
TE: Smith out, 0 in --> worse depth -->
WR: Meyers out; Juju in --> slight improvement
OL: Reiff, Anderson in + resign own guys; Wynn out --> maybe improvement, especially availability but not so much quality

DL: same
LB: same --> needs still existing
DB: McCourty out --> need a big boundary corner and FS

so overall we still need:
- blocking TE
- WR
- starting OT (i can see a day 1/2 pick to compete)
- FS
- starting LB with speed, agility, coverage skills
- Edge depth
- IOL depth

--> BB has made only 1 move for a longterm deal with future cap hits higher as you said (because we needed to replace Meyers and even with JuJu still need a WR)

--> so my conclusion: we are not building a winning team because last year we saw several important areas (weapons, QB play, O-Line) are not good enough to compete with top teams

of course everything i said is as it stands today and i know it's very early and a lot of moves will/should come
but you hardly can make this statement as of today

They aren’t done. That was the point. Structuring the contract that way means they aren’t done. Not sure why we would complain about filling holes.

You forgot P and K. They're both pretty crucial when you're going to have an offense still trying to find itself.

TBH , I like the moves so far . More of value signings . I am in the Meyers camp but hoping JuJu can come into the party .

We removed 6 deadwood - Wynn, agholor, Jonnu, bailey , Patricia and Judge. That itself is a big win.

Getting an offensive coach and OLine coach is also a win.

We have 10 draft picks and a pretty deep TE,ED and CB class. So if we really draft well this year has potential to skyrocket is into contention for next 4 years .

Mac needs to develop into a top 10 QB and Thornton into a top 40 WR. If these happen we are back in business . Next year we can sign marquee free agents.

Judge is still with the team. Phat Matt may be back since he can't find a job anywhere else. Sure, they won't be in the same roles but they'll be around.
I hope they are nowhere near the Patriots playing field ever. I'm ok with Phatt Matt being a data research / analyst guy and Judge is a total a-hole that should never speak to Mac again. Seriously...Judge has to get permission from Kraft to talk to Mac...that's how it should be.

Hope springs eternal. This is the year the Pats nail their WR pick in the draft. Super serious this time.
So I don't watch any college football and know little to nothing about scouting. I wonder if the Pats would let me try to pick a wide receiver. I mean I can't do worse than what they've done for the past 22 years right? Or maybe they can try the George Costanza method by choosing the opposite receiver they want. What’s bizarre in all of this is that if Bill thought so lowly of Meyers and didn’t offer him a contract, why was he featured so damn much hogging so many targets?

We don't exactly have an all-star cast at WR. The simplest answer is we didn't have better alternatives.

On top of that Patricia had stuck Bourne so far into his dog house that he could hardly ever get featured.

But that’s concerning. Did Patricia do it and BB let him? Or did BB do it and let Patricia take the fall? Either way is concerning because either BB gave Matt FULL control over the offense despite almost no experience or BB was making it harder on Matt and the team by benching Bourne.

It could also be option C where both agreed he should be benched but I’m sick of that ****. Welker benching in postseason over jokes (but to be fair that was not a terrible benching. Only like one possession) but then Butler the entire game.

But then he keeps running out Mac Jones despite openly yelling at his coach.

It was just a weird season where BB seemed checked out and I really hope that was just my imagination

Why? He's a big boy who got paid like one.

How do you know how he feels about how committed the Pats were to the offense? The first thing they did this off-season was fire Phat Matt and hire BoB. That sounds like a team committed to offense. to me.
The Pats had to dump Patricia or there would have been a revolt. Plus, it's pretty obvious that Bill was waiting on Bob to fill the position.
