Patriots Rumor Tracker / FA Signings (Updated: Signings in OP - 4/7)

Listen, I know I’m spoiled, been a fan since 1975, and have seen the Pats win 6 Super Bowls and go to 12. But I want the front office to do the right things. Not trying to fix the offense is frustrating.

The offense is a mess. They were exposed in the playoffs. Second highest scoring offense in football, but as we all know, vs a weak schedule. They are not helping one of the best YOUNG QBs in football, he needs help. Obviously the Oline needs help, Drake was the 4th most sacked QB in football, and then broke a record by getting sacked 21 times in 4 playoff games.

What Olineman did we sign today ? No urgency. The team has average WRs at best, which WR did we sign today ? No urgency. We have ONE NFL TE on the roster, and he’s getting old. Did we sign a TE today.

I’ll agree we needed help at edge. But the offense is where we need the most help.

I know it’s just the first day of free agency, but we needed to be more urgent about fixing major weaknesses. It doesn’t give me confidence in our front office.

But Vrabel has only been with the team for a year but according to Patriot fans he’s been at it for years.
Because he is the HC now and he will be punished for the sins of the previous HC's

Considering most deals today were massive, it definitely wasn’t the day to look for “cheaper”. Their contract for Jones definitely looks very valuable in hindsight after all the other edge guys signed later.
Yeah agreed. Today was “drunken sailor day”. Hopefully it calms the F down this week and some value is there.

One positive is Chaisson didn’t sign. Maybe the league doesn’t view him the way he views himself. I’d welcome him back at a sub $10MM/yr price

Acting like the season is over because they didn’t splurge on day 1 is silly. It’s also ok to be disappointed that with day 1 of free agency over they’re currently down their best WR, starting FS, 2nd TE, starting center, and best run defending DL while only having upgraded at FB and swapped one DE for another who’s probably not as good a pass rusher but still a comparable overall player I guess. That’s not where I thought we’d be at the end of day 1 based on the strong foundation with limited holes they had and very ample cap space to fill that. I had higher hopes for more serious additions. We will see what happens the rest of the way though.

Funny thing is…today is like preseason free agency. FA doesn’t even start until Wednesday and some people on this forum are already in full “WE’RE DOOMED!” mode.
The best UFAs signed today.

No, nothing that dramatic but there is definitely something amiss with how the team evaluates them. I believe they only changed the grading system prior to last year’s draft. We took one WR. Hopefully it’s fixed. I want them to take at least 2 WR this year.

I actually believe the issue is they just haven’t taken enough swings historically.

And when they did, it seemed obvious they F’d up. Chad Jackson, N’Keal, etc.

There’s depth this year…and all sorts of body types.
We have a one offseason to go on.

I don't believe in curses.

Let's see what they do going forward.

I mean today tells you that the Krafts told Vrabel etc al to not spend too much this year. I mean they still have the Gonzo contract to work out and I am starting to feel he's not worth it.

Don't even get me started on Maye. It's gonna be his third season and some reports are that he will be looking at 70-80 per. I'm not sure even he is worth that. In fact, I know he's not.

Does that mean he gets credit for 6 Lonbardis too?

They will spend. Just because they don’t chase drunken sailor spending doesn’t mean they don’t have a plan.
More plays for the same total cost without going crazy for a few is a sound approach.

Surprisingly kind of agree on both players for different reasons.

Gonzo seems a guy who plays hard when he feels like it. I deeply dislike that. He’s incredibly talented, but also gets burned by JAGS at times because he loses focus.

Maye…I just haven’t seen anything telling me he’s worthy of being the highest paid player in the league yet. Not even close.

If he was, he’d have found a way to throw a few TD’s in the Superbowl pressure be damned.

You know darned well a young Mahomes would have done it.

That’s the 2026 standard. Clutch, not clutch. Drake just hasn’t shown it yet. Doesn’t mean he can’t become that, but he objectively hasn’t yet.

If he does next year, pay him.

Actually no one signed today. Signings can’t happen until Wednesday.

Remember last year when it was reported that Milton Williams was signing with Carolina…where did he end up?

I’m not saying we’re gonna have similar scenarios this year but you really shouldn’t immediately go all “doom and gloom”. Especially when there are tons of free agents left to be signed.

Give it a few days…

I’d laugh my **** off of the Pats snaked another player last min.

Seriously? You think they are not trying to improve the offense?
You think that the only way to improve is to overpay the most?
Paying more than anyone else will is not a sound strategy.

We were the #2 offense in the NFL. We faced 4 of the 5 best defenses in the NFL and beat 3 of them.
The offense was held back by weather and pass blocking.
Barking out the highest number isn’t how you fix that effectively.

We were the #2 offense with 3 rookie starters and a 4th that played a lot.
We were the #2 offense with 7 new starters, brought in in one off season.
We will add players. Not adding the ones that people over paid for isn’t not trying, it’s not going crazy.

What TE would you have us sign?
I like the options in the draft way better, it's a deep class with lots of intriguing prospects.
Likely stinks and Otton is a JAG. Fant...ah no.
We can do better in the draft.

I still expect someone like dulcich and bitonio/avt, chaisson.

I do not understand why we could not keep Tonga other than being cheap
