He promoted Smith to replace him. Both good choices. He promoted Downing after the first 2 were hired as HCs. Downing first year they were 12-5Unless he hires Todd Downing. Remember, that was the only coordinator Vrabel hired. Lafluer and Smith were already on staff.
Belichick said he used to find him in his office with his feet up on his desk.
When he was at Ohio State Andy Katzenmoyer was supposed to be the next big thing. They were running laps and as Vrabel was about to lap Katenmoyer, who was dogging it, he shoved him from behind, sending Katzenmoyer ass over tea kettle. Vrabel has always been about accountability, and that’s something they desperately needed.
“The pats are a contender and Maye is a top QB in the league” is probably an exaggeration. For example, Dave Canales got the Panthers job off of his work with Mayfield in TB. I wouldn’t say Mayfield is one of the best in the league and the Bucs were really contending. But yeah, it means things are going well and moving in a positive direction. If Rees is gone in two years, that means the Pats are a contender and Maye is a top QB in the league. If Vrabel is smart, he is already developing another assistant under Rees to take over when Rees leaves and the offense doesn't miss a beat.
McDaniels may not ever leave because no one is ever going to hiring him again to be a head coach, but that isn't a reason to select an OC. You take the best guy to be your OC even if you fear that he will become a prime head coaching candidate in a few years. That was Belichick's mistake with making Patricia OC rather than promoting Caley. He didn't promote Caley because he feared that he would leave in a few years. He knew Patricia would never leave.
The other advantage of running a different scheme than most of the league is that there is less competition for players that have the needed skillset.
The problem I have with this is that I hope we're not picking this high the year after. We hadn't picked this high (last 2 yrs) since 1993. These opportunities will hopefully be rare. Do you trust this personnel office with what will hopefully be the last time we do this?I generally think you need to give a GM at least 3 years to turn a bad franchise around, especially when they are saddled with the owners coaching staff, and they suck. However I think this time next year there will be a better understanding of whether Wolf is doing a good job or not. Now he has a good Head Coach, 135 million to spend in free agency, and a good draft situation. Wolf should be able to make significant progress with this roster given this situation, and by then we will have a better read on whether his first draft class is panning out or not.
Sometimes I feel like this organization is the 25-year-old guy who never moved, wearing his letterman jacket at the townie bar on Thanksgiving break. He sees all his old friends and relives the glory days, trying to recreate that only to wake up the next morning in the same place doing the same thing he has been doing.
I don't hate the Vrabel hire, and honestly, he was my second choice for HC, but I will be pretty disappointed if we end up with McDaniels as OC, Wes as the receivers coach, etc. It just feels like the Krafts still don't want to move on and need the ties to the dynasty to make them feel comfortable. I know guys like Vrabel and Wes aren't part of Bill's coaching tree, but it just feels like we constantly make safe, comfortable hires instead of going outside the walls for someone innovative.

The jest mocking thread never left. no matter how bad the pats have been we will always have the jest, they're suckage is eternalSo I'm sitting here thinking about this news, and I keep coming back to this, from a personal perspective: I feel like for the past 6 months or so, most of my thoughts about the team have been negative, verging on angry. I understand certain people who spend too much time on TikTok (guessing: never been there myself) or watching a lot of Oprah will feel that "anger is never justified," but I kind of think that's crap. You can only dine on so many **** sandwiches before you get a little cranky. Setting that aside, it's just a great relief to feel a little hopeful, and it really it is a pleasure to find myself in a sunnier place for a change. We have a quarterback, and we have a coach, and we have a #1 corner. Pretty darn good, eh? I mean, the Jets, to whom comparisons have been dangerously apt this year, haven't had all three of those critical roles filled in decades. Maybe it's time to revive that Jet's-Mocking thread that was so much fun for years.
I’m going to take a “prove it” approach. This franchise won’t ever relinquish the need to have a defensive coach in an offensive league. Ben must’ve turned us downAlright time to turn this **** around, finally.
I don’t like the resume. Basically one year in the NFL as TE coach and passing game coordinator in an offense that sucked. He’s basically a college guy who wasn’t great there. Why not?
