If it’s McDaniel he won’t need to be replaced.
If it’s someone who gets a HC job, he will have been grooming a replacement.
And hiring an OC who makes our pathetic offense so good that he gets hired as a HC is a problem I am happy to accept
Unless he hires Todd Downing. Remember, that was the only coordinator Vrabel hired. Lafluer and Smith were already on staff.

I have alot of faith in qb and hc now. Last domino to drop is GM. If wolf doesnt have a good 2025 must cut bait and try again there . Unless Vrabel gets him replaced now

I wouldn’t mind Tommy Rees but I’m not opposed to Josh because it would be a long term commitment as long it worked. I know the Josh detractors have said it’s an outdated offense. To me I think Josh has spent the last couple years watching games and thinking about how he could update his playbook and play calling, I would think that’s what any out of work coordinator would be doing.

If most of the league was running a certain type of offense would it be better to be a team that ran a different offense? I remember Bill saying at one point the Pats, Steelers and a couple other teams were running a 3-4 defense while all the others ran a 4-3, he thought it gave then an advantage because offenses had to spend some more time planning for something they didn’t see too often.
The other advantage of running a different scheme than most of the league is that there is less competition for players that have the needed skillset.

I would have been happy with Johnson, but I am thrilled with the Vrabel hiring. Seems to be exactly what this franchise needed. I was so pissed when the Pats traded him and this almost makes up for that.

There is no way that Vrabel accepted the job without influence over personnel. If Wolf stays his role will be more administrative than decision maker which is a very good thing.

Don’t want Rees

I am beginning to like the idea of Tommy Rees as OC. Vrabel actually consulted on offense last year with the Browns. So he worked closely with Rees. Rees has success calling plays at the college level. He seems like he could be an up and coming OC.
Two school of thought:

- With Rees you’ll need to find a new OC in 2 years
- With McDaniels you are probably set for a longtime

Doug Pederson could be an interesting choice for OC

When he was playing here, he would routinely get up in Belichick's face (metaphorically, at least). And Belichick put up with it, because he backed it up with his play. He knew what he was supposed to do, and he knew what his teammates were doing. (Plus he was so versatile that they never had a play design where they had to take him off the field.)

Belichick said he used to find him in his office with his feet up on his desk.

When he was at Ohio State Andy Katzenmoyer was supposed to be the next big thing. They were running laps and as Vrabel was about to lap Katenmoyer, who was dogging it, he shoved him from behind, sending Katzenmoyer ass over tea kettle. Vrabel has always been about accountability, and that’s something they desperately needed.

Reid is the offensive mind for his team. Thats what the Pats lack and I fear it WILL bite them. Vrabel I have no doubt will hire a top notch OC and offensive staff. Who are their replacements?
Vrabel needs to hire a good QB coach who can learn from say Tommy Rees and if the OC takes a head coaching job then the QB coach takes over.

I generally think you need to give a GM at least 3 years to turn a bad franchise around, especially when they are saddled with the owners coaching staff, and they suck. However I think this time next year there will be a better understanding of whether Wolf is doing a good job or not. Now he has a good Head Coach, 135 million to spend in free agency, and a good draft situation. Wolf should be able to make significant progress with this roster given this situation, and by then we will have a better read on whether his first draft class is panning out or not.

If Rees is gone in two years, that means the Pats are a contender and Maye is a top QB in the league. If Vrabel is smart, he is already developing another assistant under Rees to take over when Rees leaves and the offense doesn't miss a beat.

McDaniels may not ever leave because no one is ever going to hiring him again to be a head coach, but that isn't a reason to select an OC. You take the best guy to be your OC even if you fear that he will become a prime head coaching candidate in a few years. That was Belichick's mistake with making Patricia OC rather than promoting Caley. He didn't promote Caley because he feared that he would leave in a few years. He knew Patricia would never leave.
