Patriots Early 53-Man Roster Projection 1.0

With a 3.3m dollar cap hit, to boot.
I think we can all safetly say that we have no idea whats happening at Linebacker after Hightower. Would it be the most shocking thing if Van Noy or Harris didnt make the cut? Surprising for sure, but BB has done stuff like that before.

I think most would agree that Harris is a lock, at least for 2017. I'd put him up there with HT.

McClellin, while being a bit overpriced in my opinion, wears a lot of hats, too, so he's probably safe.

You make a good point about the competition at LB, though. I think we've improved upon that position.

I won't feel bad if Cyrus Jones and Richards get cut. CJ is a headcase and Richards was a major overreach. This roster is too good to carry non productive players.

Jones didn't look great by any stretch of the imagination in 2016. Having said that, perhaps we should at least give him another TC before tossing him down the crapper.

If Cyrus Jones is our #5 or even #6 CB, he'll still make the team. I don't see Belichick changes his basic draft strategy because a rookie had a bad year. Early round draft choices get a second chance. That's jus the way it is.

BTW, if that weren't the case, Richards wouldn't have made last year's team.

While not a perfect comparison, cutting ties early with Kevin O'Connell comes to mind.

KOC was a third round draft pick, 94th overall.

C Jones was a 2nd round draft pick, 60th overall.

O'Connell was released during his second training camp.

I am not expecting Cyrus Jones to look as bad as O'Connell did, but there is a precedent. If he doesn't show improvement, it would not be surprising if he is history when roster cuts are made at the end of training camp.

The interesting thing about the "Patriots Meritocracy" is that if Cyrus Jones does not show significant improvement and carve a niche for himself on this team he will be gone... BB will not give a crap about how it looks.

BB has enough cred to do that sort of thing without any worries of fan backlash, of course if he is let go then there will be the predictable threads about "List BB's biggest draft busts", "Should BB give away his GM duties because of his draft history?" or "Has football passed BB by and he needs some help?".

Those shiny Lombardi things help.....
I think he approached this year's draft much like 2007's in that he was going in with veteran FAs and trades and needed fewer draft picks as a result (4). Then it was a trade for Moss and Welker and after drafting Meriweather ( round 1) and Kareem Brown ( round 4), it was a bunch of 6th and 7th rounders who I don't think made the team... You know those 6th and 7th rounders never amount to anything.....

I fully agree with your reasoning, Darryl, but I think Cyrus would have to play very poorly during the next 6 weeks to be cut.

I don't believe we've seen enough of him on defense to make that type of decision at this point, even with the fumbling issues on ST. Of course, that could change quickly if he plays poorly during TC/preseason, but I think it would have to be downright awful play.

A lot of folks have David Harris making the 53. While I agree that he was a good signing, I'd be surprised if they cut Roberts at his expense as he performed well as a rookie and should continue to improve. While Harris brings great leadership, he will be turning 34 this January. How much more does this guy have in the tank?

6 RBs and 6 CBs?

No Harris?

If Slater wasn't so good he'd be gone.

Patriots Early 53-Man Roster Projection 1.0

Steve Balestrieri

The New England Patriots will have many difficult decisions to make at the end of training camp this summer. They enter the 2017 season fresh off a Super Bowl win and have re-tooled their roster to an even more dangerous (on paper) group that was victorious in February.

They seem to have more than made up for the players that they’ve lost in free agency and appear poised for another deep playoff run in 2017. Bill Belichick went against the grain once again and traded most of his draft picks in what was considered a very deep draft and came away with a slew of established veterans.

Roberts not making the roster is absurd. He played excellent in his rookie season and there is not reason to believe he cannot improve on that. You cut a young up and coming LB to keep a 33 year old ex-Jet.

I do not like Harris to make the roster. Harris decline was noticeable last season and I would rather keep someone with some upside.
His salary and dead cap guarantee he is on the 2017 roster.

Considering how much money Burkhead is being paid, can we assume he will continue to play on special teams?

Usually players making that much money are kept off ST.
While he is getting paid handsomely, so is Gilleslie and James white and they will be platooning along with Lewis who is no slouch. It is very much possible that Burkhead's anticipated contributions to Special Teams was factored into his salary.

Absolutely. Figure 15-20 ST snaps a game and 15-35 snaps on O and he will contribute offensively.

That's a good chunk of playing time and for $3m seems reasonable

Elandon Roberts will not get cut.

Pretty good leadership here for a rookie:

BTW - High was on the field..
