About the only thing that makes sense here is that they saved about $750K in salary cap room.

Punting DOES matter, Weatherford was my MVP of the last Pats/Giants Super Bowl, he put the Pats offense inside the 10 pretty much every time.

A good punter is a potential game winner.

I can say definitively that anyone who says definitively who will definitely make the team or definitely be cut is definitely a fool.

You have to think that the Patriots are going to be looking elsewhere for additions from other rosters (i.e. Garay could be a natural fit considering the current depth at DT).

Not to me. Forston was the only other guy on my 53, and I had him as a likely late cut after a scrap-heap signing.

I wonder if that was a money move and they wanted to prevent another AV move when they let a good young kicker ( Robby Gould) get away and then lost the old hand anyway.... This was the last year of Mesko's contract and who knows what he would have wanted and they tie up Allen for a few years..

lol sure thing. The difference between a "great punter" and an average one is like 5 yards of field position, which in today's NFL is meaningless. Not to mention that we should be punting about 75% less than we currently do (if at all) anyway.

I suspect the fact that Mesko was in his final contract year was a bigger factor than the cost. Allen is cost-controlled for the next 4 seasons.
