I'm not as shocked as I was when he cut Lawyer Milloy just days before start of the season.

I'm trying to remember how that worked out in the end.

Yeah, everyone likes that low lying fruit comparison as a guarantee of future success. However, Rodney Harrison was on that roster and was an upgrade over Milloy which made Milloy expendable.

I'm not seeing any Rodney Harrisons on this roster.

Well we can close the door on the 2007 draft now. :confused3:

While technically no draftees remain, I still consider it to be a rather productive draft based on the return on investment from those original draft picks (i.e., Welker, Moss).

Every once in a while there is a BB move that boggles the mind. Absolutely mystifies.

What on earth is going on -- cutting the starting safety who has played 64 games in 4 years, knows the system, is playing for 1.65 million (inexpensive).
What was the rush? Who is currently on the roster better than Merriweather. He may be an ass but he was a known quantity.

BB could have cut him before the opener -- and used the next 8 days to TRADE him. Some team desperate for a starting safety would have coughed up a 3rd rounder. Incidentally, for a coach who value VALUE -- he could have let Merriweather go next year as a free agent and received some compensation. As it is, BB got NOTHING back now nor wil he get anything next year.

All he did wa make Merriweather a FA one year earlier. No loss for the player but questionable move from the TEAM perspective.

Boggled. Mystified. And its even worse if the Pats did NOT even try to trade him. Just what was the hurry, Mr. Belichick?

Bill is a perfectionist ... I'm guessing he has some OCD as well. it had to drive him up the wall - possibly to the point of distraction to watch him play - watching others cover for him.

Josh Barrett and Sergio Brown?

Darren Sharper?

I rather have another Shutdown Cornerback over a converted safety that has an injury history. The S seem to get more wear and tear.Keep the BEAST Ras as a CB opposite McCourty

How do you know they didn't try to trade him? And the fact that Meriweather's a know quantity actually counts against him since, you know, he f'ing sucks.

The difference between then and now is that the Pats had Rodney Harrison to take over for Millow and felt that Antwan Harris could take over for Tebucky Jones. And that didn't last a full game before Eugene Wilson was on the field as the starting Free-Safety.

This year, the Pats have Chung, who is NOT Rodney Harrison, Brown, Ihedigbo, and Antwaun Molden... They also have Ras-I Dowling who either is the best kept secret or hasn't played much at all.. Huge difference in situations.

We didn't know what we had in Rodney at the time - though Belichick apparently had a good idea.

As far as the fans knew at the time Rodney was signed, it was simply the Patriots picking up a guy cut outright by the Chargers to add some quality depth.

The similarity of the situations is more important than the differences. In both cases Belichick keeps the players he feels gives the team the best chance to win.

When he cut Milloy to the shock of every Patriots fan, that resulted in another Super Bowl ring.

I just got back home, having spent the day with an ailing relative and no outside access. I'll read the threads later, but I thought I'd post before reading takes:

This cut completely surprises me, because I figured he was as safe as could be, especially after the Sanders cut. The fact that they didn't work out a trade with someone is also a head scratcher.

Just my first impression, probably already overtaken by events.

Surprising, as Sanders was already cut. They are kinda thin on Safeties..

Maybe Darren Sharper will be a Patriot? Assuming his knee surgery does not hinder that..

His play before being accused of shooting someone has always been erratic. I lost count on how many times hes landed in BBs doghouse.

Rumors out of this camp were that it wasnt going well for old Brandon and that Mayo had to clue him in on where he was supposed to line up.

The fact that they didn't work out a trade with someone is also a head scratcher.

Just goes to show you what the rest of the NFL thinks of this Pro Bowl Safety. Nobody wanted him bad enough to step up with compensation before he hit the waiver wire.
