I don't consider it a legitimate question. I just took about 30 seconds and showed how to add more than $27m to next year's available cap money, and that's on top of the fact that next year's roster is currently sitting at $101,248,228 for 32 players, which would leave $40 million available even without the cap rising and potential cuts.

Browner and wilfork, ok....but I really don't think looking at the circumstances there was any way for us to keep Revis. Even McCourty said it, his heart was in NYC. and when woody made it a priority to bring him back he never was returning.

Yeah, whether or not his heart was in NY or not, the Jets would have given him an offer that the Pats couldn't match (they could have front loaded $25-30 million into this year if they had to). There was no way the Pats would have been able to compete financially with the Jets. So even if he would take a slight discount to stay, there is no way the Pats could have gotten close.

The only thing the Pats could have done is stayed in the race and drove up the price more. But Revis probably used the Pats anyway saying they were still bidding for his services even after they backed out of the race.

The cap will be going up, yet again. As of right now, cutting Mayo next year (instead of reworking/cutting him this year) would free up $8m in cap space, Sheard (if he doesn't work out) would be another $5m, and Amendola more than $4m. So, just 3 cuts would net more than $17m on top of what some figure will be another $10m cap jump.

It is a Felgerism to take the quote out of context. Yes, there is cap maneuverability that all teams can do, but the cap is not this completely flexible guideline that teams can bend at their will to pay their entire team top dollar.

There are ways to push money into the future. But if you ask the Saints this year, the Cowboys last year, or the Jets three years ago, you eventually have to pay the piper and clear house to pay for past cap manipulations.

And BTW, Hightower, Chandler Jones, and Solder are free agents next year. Both Hightower and Jones can and may very well have their option years picked up which will likely take about $15-16 million of the cap space you just freed up. Solder will also eat up $4 or so million. Yes, it is fun doing all this cap cutting in a vacuum and ignoring the other issues the team has to deal with in terms of contracts.

So are the Pats going to field a team of Brady, Gronk, Revis, and a bunch of veteran minimum scrubs. No, none of the impending free agents next year are as good as Revis is individually, but when you have to say good bye to a bunch of them for one player they start to be far more costly as a group.

Well, when you're talking about cap space, and those are the guys being used as examples of players who might be lost, it's kind of important, IMO.

It's a common sense, and understandable, response to the Patriots letting Revis, Browner and Wilfork walk, when keeping them would pretty much have assured (barring injury) that the Patriots were going to be returning to the Super Bowl.

I'm sorry that your reading comprehension sucks. Perhaps, if you hadn't deliberately ignored where I wrote "pretty much have assured" in your response, you may have gotten a better grasp of my post.

Lets just cut a bunch of players to get under the cap and say the cap is irrelvant
