OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

I don't get the people who say it's rigged and still watch profusely. Might as well watch WWE instead
There were times that I'd watch the NYFL and it seemed like the WWE or games were rigged, especially when they went to the mystery guest in NY for a call on close plays.

I have been on the forum since Sunday and it has been awesome. They believe Mahomes specifically took a dive because of how bad he played in the second half. They have no football explanation for it. That is probably what makes me chuckle the most. They have also been mentioning Brady non-stop as they know he will never catch him legacy-wise.
Well to be fair there are a couple coaches talking about the same thing

What do you mean about taking a dive?

It's rediculous how Chief fans and Mahomes lovers keep on talking about catching up to Brady.

He is not even in the same ball park.
He isn't even better than Rodgers and Brees and he needs to pass them first.

If he does, then they can talk about him being better than the Mannings and Roethlisberger.

Until he passes them, they just look stupid comparing Mahomes to Brady.

Nobody catching Tom. Doesn't help Mahomes that he'll forever be 0-2 vs Brady in the postseason. Chiefs also have more things to worry about than Mahomes legacy. The AFC is stacked with great young QBs

Imo, it's halfway there.

There's favoritism and also new rules used solely to enfluence the outcome of a game.

The most blatant tool used is taunting. Taunting has nothing to do with how the game is played on the field. It's used to try to change the momentum of the game. It was used on both Suh and Brady for the sin of complaining about infractions committed against them.

Have to disagree overall, but I respect your viewpoint on the topic.

I believe Mahomes is better than Rodgers and Brees. I mean, I think he plays at a higher level than those two played at during their peak. And in terms of accomplishments, his ability to win games is well above either of them. Sure, he has only four years as a starter, so he won't stack up to their career longevity and numbers, but what he's done over this stretch is more impressive than any four year stretch from those guys. True, he hasn't played yet with the team handicapped by his salary, and he's always had great weapons, but I think what he's done is pretty far beyond those two.

All that said, I think there's legitimate concerns about Mahomes psyche. Beginning last Super Bowl, he clearly has some major problems in his head about structure and freelancing. I'm not even convinced it's because he's ****y; it actually may have to do with the opposite type of pressure, which is self-confidence and hesitation. But whatever it is, it's really ugly when it happens. That AFCCG was absolutely atrocious. I'm still in disbelief over the final six dropbacks, which I can understand why Chiefs fans would be in such disbelief and confusion they'd stab at desperate conclusions. It does indeed seem inexplicable that a guy could basically Knoblauch there...a guy of Mahomes stature.

Maybe we don't see it again...who knows? But I think his play all season was boiling to some type of point like that. He was fantastic when he let the running game and underneath routes do their job against favorable defensive schemes, and then capitalizing after being patient. But then he abandoned the approach at the worst time and went back to his read/reach/freelance style, which has been terribly inefficient for a long time. If this is an innate trait, as @Deus Irae suggested about Mahomes draft concerns, then he's just going to follow in the footsteps of all these great QBs before him who won their first Super Bowl and were considered all-time greats, and then never came through again when it mattered.

Of the young QBs, Mahomes only had Lamar as competition who is no better than Michael Vick was.

Now it's Allen, Herbert, and Burrows. At the end of their careers, Mahomes might not even be the best or 2nd best of this group.

I also think the big contract he signed may be playing in his head as well. When you get half a billion it’s easy to feel like you have to be the man to justify it.

Another reason to me would be his family. Not sure if you saw but the Bengals fans came out with a sweatshirt that says goodbye Britney on it. That’s how much of a negative profile she has with his rival teams. That can’t be easy for him either to go along with his TicToc brother.

That's just it. Brady took on all comers for 20 years including Mahomes at the end. That is what is required to be the GOAT which I admit is a ridiculous mountain top to reach but that is the standard set by TFB.

  • Brady was an NFL starter for 20 seasons.
  • Brady went to 10 Super Bowls.
  • So, with Brady, you were 50/50 to get to the title game.

Mahomes is currently matching that pace, albeit with a much shorter career to date so let's not demand perfection of the kid. With Brady now retired, Mahomes is the best QB in the game today, and he should have plenty of time to improve his game.

Problem he WILL face is what happens when talent around him changes and perhaps most importantly he loses his head coach? Brady dealt with the former essentially 4 separate times and the latter once and never ever slowed down.

Mahomes certainly off to a hot start.

But part of it has been his competition, Pats at the end of their dynasty, Steelers with an over the hill QB, Ravens with a severely limited QB, and an ascending Bills team that still can't get over the hump.

It's only going to get harder from here for Mahomes. His salary cap will be in the 40-50 mil range. Kelce is getting up there in age. Bills are now an experienced team. There are now several other ascending teams and up and comer QBs.

I'll be shocked if his next 4 years will be like his 1st 4.

So here's my dream scenario.

Godwin, Gronk, and Fournette are back with the Bucs. They trade a 2nd rounder for JG. He plays adequately enough that the Bucs are contending for a playoff spot. Jimmy GQ does his thing, which is getting injured midway through the season. They make an emergency call to Brady.

He comes to the rescue. He continues that chemistry with Evans that he finally had at the end of this season. Evans has 1500 yard and gets his 1st all pro. Gronk and Brady surpasses Manning/Harrison in Tds. He finish the season raising his 8th Lombardi before riding off into the sunset into retirement with Gronk.

In 5 years Brady enters the HOF with Gronk rather than Roethlisberger.

d%#*!@t. Why'd he have to retire. This all could have been a reality instead of a daydream.

I believe the reason for why the Bucs are clearly signaling that they won’t be able to bring back key FAs is because Glazer just doesn’t want to spend the cold hard cash to do it. The cap is not a problem for them next season. It REALLY isn’t. If the Bucs wanted to they could bring back who the wanted and upgrade in other areas pretty easily. But that would involve big up front real money in the form of signing bonuses that hit the cap in like 2024 or whenever and Glazer is literally internationally known as a cheap ass owner. So forget the cap, he’s probably not willing to write a 9 figure check this offseason of immediately guaranteed cash to field an elite team next year.

Why would he want to play and get hit when he can make $25M from the comfort of the booth.

No chance he does this. He probably won’t be good at it. Also, this involves more traveling than actually being a football player. Why the hell would he do that when a huge reason he retired is because of his family.

(Not saying he'll do it , but "if"):

Because Giselle would be thrilled to see Tom making that kind of cash for so much less time investment.

Just the fact that we think those type of things is reason enough to be concerned. Luckily I'm done with the NYFL now.
