OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

Still amazed at this. This was from week 4 last year, look at the score and time remaining and we know the Pats left points on the field up to this point. If the Chiefs struggled like this against a weak team with no NFL QB on the active roster and no practice at all - could have been foreshadowing for their Super Bowl collapse.
They were also pretty awful vs the Panthers, Falcons, Chargers and the first half vs Miami when Mahomes had 3 picks. They were sleep walking through the season last year while their defense led the league in holding/PI calls. That got masked because of the offense putting up so many points but it all did come home to roost in the Super Bowl when they ran into a wagon called the Bucs that exposed everything about their team.

I get that, but I also get that over the last two decades, I have seen these teams jump up and...oh this is going to be the next dynasty talk. It never happens. They are a cant miss they are going to be great forever. Not with a cap they wont be. Only one team with a perfect storm was able to do that, and KC is not off to a great start with the cap or learning that You have to actually have a defense too. There have been a lot of high flying offenses, and then the league catches up with you, and they learn what they have to do with you. I could have made this same argument with the Rams in 2000, who is ever going to stop them? How long did it last? Injuries, inner turmoil, cap, loss of players, etc etc.
Saying "Something could happen" is different from "How dare they put that team there!" The reason the Chiefs are looked at the way they are is because they are that good. They're not being over-hyped. They were 14-1 last year with Mahomes, and they ran into a peaking team with pass rushers, at the moment they were missing both of their offensive tackles.

So, other than the Super Bowl jinx, there's absolutely no reason not to expect them to be back in the title game, for a 3rd consecutive year.

Also people don’t give the Bucs offense in that SB enough credit because Mahomes running for his life was the main story. Bucs came up with 0 points after 1st and goal at the 1 and then essentially stopped trying to score midway through the 3rd and still scored 31.

14-1…realistically there’s only one direction they can go. A 13-4 season might show their vulnerabilities but still might be good for the #1 seed, and even with a crap defense it’s still Mahomes vs. Allen/Mayfield/Jackson. I think they should remain favorites.

On a related note, the 7-team playoff field is really going to kill dynasties. Teams like the Chiefs will now have a heavy price to pay if they go into cruise control.

I hear you, though the NFL's always been funny with who has playoff success. On the one hand, you want to say "Better get the #1 seed!". On the other hand, a wild card team just won the Super Bowl.

And that offense will be getting an actual off season and a healthy AB, Brady, and Howard

Gotta give Peyton (and his mom) props for this one:

Last year, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady squared off in a one-day golf match, with Tiger Woods (Peyton’s partner) and Phil Mickelson (Brady’s partner). This year, it’s Brady and Aaron Rodgers with Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau, respectively.

But Peyton remains involved. Appearance on The Match: Prediction Show, Manning made an important observation regarding Brady’s seven career Super Bowl wins.

“If it wasn’t for my mother, Olivia Manning, he’d have 11 of ’em,” Peyton said of Brady.

Do you really expect them to go 16-1 this year, though? It is really hard to repeat the type of season they had even though on paper they look pretty good and obviously have Mahomes. I think their division will be tougher and of course the AFC as a whole improved especially the Browns and us too. I also think they have been pretty fortunate with injuries to the their top 3 - Mahomes, Hill, Kelce. I have to think that luck runs out too.

Who is your favorite to get to the Super bowl?

They don't need to go 16-1. We're talking about who should be favored to get to and/or win the Super Bowl. Until we see proof that some seismic change has happened since the end of the Super bowl, people need to accept that there is not a single AFC team in the Chiefs' class.

Sure but you are the one that cited their record last year so that is why I brought it up. I do think it will be difficult for them to get back because there are so many variables. They almost lost to the Browns last year because Mahomes got concussed. They didn't improve their defense. The AFC got better. This does not mean they won't get back, or they shouldn't be favored. They should but the odds are against them especially with the expanded regular season and only one bye.

I cited their record to show their dominance in the regular season last year, not to set any particular bar for this season. "If Mahomes gets injured" isn't really an argument for this. Remember that this post:

is the genesis of this particular discussion. And this:

So tell me where the hell is this confidence that the Chiefs are just gonna moonwalk into the Super Bowl again? On paper they aren’t any better roster rise than they were last season. Where did they upgrade?

is the main part. I think Vector is missing the upgrade to the OTs, but I was focused more on the first part of the quote, which seemed to ignore some obvious reasons for confidence, IMO.

Remember when a few too many fans were blaming Brady for Harry's growing pains. Well it looks like Brady wasn't the problem after all. Go figure.

Now who was the dumb dumb who picked this guy in the 1st round?

Brady the GM should find a way to get him on the Bucs, make him play TE, and see him get 600 yards and 4 TDs.

Since Tom signed with Tampa, the Bucs have won a Super Bowl at home, the Lightning have won two Stanley Cups, and the Rays have played in the World Series.

Yeah even a slight good Qb performance would have kept that game close, not to mention how Mahomes threw an obvious pick and then the refs claimed his momentum had been stopped so it didnt count which I have never seen from a QB throw in my life and will never see that called again. Teams study what works that other teams do. Atlanta who has an awful defense held KC under 20 last year and if not for a dropped int in the endzone win the game.
I recently re-watched the last SB and I was surprised at how many poor passes Mahomes threw. The talk at the time was how amazing Mahomes played without any time to throw, but even when he had time he was off target a lot. He seemed to be throwing the ball behind the receivers.
