OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

I recently re-watched the last SB and I was surprised at how many poor passes Mahomes threw. The talk at the time was how amazing Mahomes played without any time to throw, but even when he had time he was off target a lot. He seemed to be throwing the ball behind the receivers.
There were times he was rushed pretty good, but there were other times he would start running even when Pressure was not there, and a lot of throws he was in the clear when he made them and they were still off. I mean basically he was playing his style, run around until one of their track stars get open, the problem was, he was throwing into coverage a lot. If he was doing some 3 step drops and deliver, that would have went a long way, they never did, everything was a 7-10 step drop 15 yards back and then run around. Thats not how you play a pass rush. He was not on target, and its easy to say, oh the pass rush, but he has thrived off beating pass rush before. He has just not played good in the superbowls he has played in. Even in the niners superbowl, the difference was Tampa was moving the ball late and scored a lot and the niners didnt.

************.

The media is really unbelievable...lol...the guy has now played three full seasons.

Today's sports media is all about being woke and bulding up/tearing down players, built upon the foundation of "Best ever!" type conversations, regardless of actual merit. They need Mahomes to be what they're pimping him to be, because they no longer do journalism, so they need to be able to do the normal cycles.

Loomis esssentially confirms report Brady and New Orleans were looking like a match before Brees came back into the mix.

Florio takes dump on the story, as usual, by wildly speculating that Brady continued to negotiate/leverage with the Saints after Brees committed, which is totally unsupported by facts. A sense, huh? But no one has ever reported on that or even implied that. Hijacks the story and runs with a ridiculous take. Brady signed for $25M...not $40M.

So why was there a sense that Brady was considering the Saints, even after Brees had said he’d return to New Orleans? The explanation could be as simple as this. Don Yee represents both Brady and Saints coach Sean Payton. Once it became clear that Brady was bound for the Buccaneers, propping up the Saints as a potential destination would help leverage Tampa Bay to pay more money and/or make more concessions — such as free and full access to the team and its facilities for TB12 guru Alex Guerrero, pandemic notwithstanding.

If Brady was going to Tampa Bay anyway, why shouldn’t Payton have helped Brady make it as expensive as it could be for the Bucs to get him?

The Lightning are stacked enough to be one of those teams that win like 4 in a row. Nothings stopping that train.

Great story except for the story killing fact that he didn't ask for more. $25 million? That was a freaking bargain.

They won't be able to go $17+ million over the cap every year.

Yep…first drive, 3rd down near midfield, there was an open guy streaking downfield (Hardman?) and Mahomes missed a pretty easy 25-yard pass. He was pretty inaccurate throughout the first half.

What stands out to me is how poorly he played and also the lack of adjustments by the Chiefs. They had almost no designed short/curl routes against two very deep safeties. They also rarely used extra blockers. They might have put both Edwards-Helaire and Bell (they deactivated him) in the backfield in a pony formation and also used Hill exclusively on rub routes and quick crossers. It was bizarre that the entire game they kept sending 4 WRs (if you count Kelce) downfield.

Fun stat:

Mahomes Super Bowl passer ratings over 80: 0
Brady Super Bowl passer ratings over 100: 5

But LiTtlE gOaT or something.

CEH was running the ball well too. Brady would've kept checking to a run if he was being pressured like Patty

A good comparison game is the Bucs Saints playoff. The Saints played a very similar defense and took out Evans and Godwin. Brady worked the underneath in the second half and ran the ball. Why KC didn't do that, I don't know. One reason might have been the late TD at half. Being down 21-6 might have made them feel rushed and unable to run.

Only getting a FG out of the opening drive of the second half was also a killer because Brady came right down and made it 28-9. This is why it irks me when people only mention the Bucs defense. The Bucs offense scoring at will made the Chiefs one dimensional in that game. It's a defense's dream to get up 2 scores early and 3 scores in the middle of the third.

It's all part of the narrative of recent years, though. Diminish Brady's play in favor of Mahomes, Rodgers, Wilson and Watson. And, in this case, it's easy to do just by keeping analysis at surface level. But the game was basically won right here, with drives 3-6 (Drive 4 was the Chiefs' goal line stand):

Then, as you pointed out, the death blow was drive 7, after the Chiefs were forced to settle for that field goal.

Drive 4 would have ended in a touchdown if not for an awful drop in the end zone.
