This could get ugly fast! HSI (Homeland Security Investigations, ICE) had a wiretap on this guy's phone for at least a few years. Meaning that they have every bet made on tape. I wonder who put down the $5 million dollar bet on the Pats v Rams Superbowl. Imagine if it was Goff or Darnold, that win would then have to be vacated. What if it a Rams assistant coach? All 4 major Pro Sports leagues must be cringing at the thought of this! It wouldn't take much to match the voices on the phone to players.

I wonder which broadcaster had to re-mortgage his house to pay them off. Of course, how did the feds find out? One guy ratted them out because he didn't want to pay them the $6 million that he owed them!!

I have long said that getting into bed with sports gambling was a slippery slope for all sports leagues, this could really crumble a lot of careers!

Of course, I highly doubt anyone in the NFL, MLB, NBA, or NHL wants this investigated, so nothing will come of this. But this Ladies and Gentlemen, is why FTW never bets on sports. He will play 3 card poker in a casino for hours, but never bet a dime on sports, or horse racing. I used to love to go to Taunton to bet on the dogs, because dogs are dogs, no jockey, nothing to influence how they run, although I did have one dog who literally stopped to take a dump in the homestrech, while leading the race, costing me a trifecta!

But generally I agree - the more money involved in a sport, the more corrupt it is. College football and basketball long ago gave up any semblance of a level playing field, and that's just the tip of the iceberg that we can see.

the only historical equivalent I can think of team wise is the 1919 black sox scandal... while it is a tainted because of what Chicago did, MLB never vacated the title, and the Reds are still considered the 1919 Champions... so its highly unlikely that the Patriots title vs the Rams would be vacated... and since everyone already thinks all our titles are tainted, meh...

there are a lot of individual players who get caught up in it... and its never affected the team records on a pro level... college is a different beast... they would strip wins if the janitor didn't cover his nose when he sneezed

That didn’t happen and even if it did no title is being vacated.

The only thing that would vacate a title IMO is a cheating scandal with either hard proof or high degree of likelihood that it impacted the outcome of the Super Bowl. That 2001 walkthrough tape if it existed might have done it.

So, if we applied the same logic here, the Rams would (theoretically) have to vacate their Conference championship and lose their wins from that season, but the teams that beat them, including NE in the Super Bowl, keep those achievements.

Every single game has a point spread. It stands to reason that some of them are going to hit it perfectly. Many others, however, will not. For example, I don't remember NE getting 40 against the Bills....

It's worth noting, BTW, that there is a conflict in the rulebook: while this rule technically gives him the right to reverse a result or require a re-play, there's also a rule that explicitly prohibits the Commissioner or anyone other than the head referee of a game from declaring a forfeit.
