[Old 2020 thread] NFL Free Agency/Trade Rumors:

Must be fun times to be the agent for immature clowns like Ngakoue.
So wrong
Agent salivating that he will get an opportunity to renegotiate his behemoth’s contract and claim a % of new guaranteed $$$$.

What I think may have happened during the Gronk negotiations, BB told Arians that if they don't find a taker for Howard, Belichick would cough up a late rounder.

Could be. Or could be like when they drafted Gronk. BB had a trade with Detroit that he nixed when Gronk fell to him. BB might have his eye on someone and if he does not fall to NE, they will trade for Howard. Older free agents, like Charles Clay, who BB always liked, are still available too.

It's interesting to me that Logan Ryan is still a FA. Even Patricia hasn't called? They need CB help down there.

At this point most teams are waiting for the comp pick window to close.

Could they even have made a trade for him with the little cap room they have? I don't know the rules so just asking.

What date is that this year?
4 PM on the Monday after the draft now. That’s earlier than it had been under the old CBA.

I don't know any of the cap implications, but looking at this strictly through personnel-tinted glasses, it appears that the TE more likely to be on the move is the older Cameron Brate...Licht & Arians might decide to roll with the old vet Gronk, the young vet (& insurance) Howard, and one of the developmental guys (Auclair, Hudson, Leggett or McElroy)...They can always draft a TE also...

hearing trent williams to browns is gaining steam

For cap reasons, it is silly to speculate about signing anyone. This is why the Patriots
will probably trade Thuney for much less than he is worth to get much needed cash to
re-sign Ferentz and Newhouse.

Makes total sense.

Worst off-season in the last 20 years...at least...

get used to this...wtf man..burton for league min to colts who have 0 shot...**** man. lets hope for BB COY this year because we know he hasn't had a fair shot at it forever and maybe next year with massive cash we can restock. Oh...lets hope "stid" doesn't puke all over himself too.

A trade or extension of Thuney is NOT needed to sign free agents, especially low cost ones like Ferentz and Newhouse.

The patriots could announce a restructure of Mason ($3M) or Gilmore ($4.7M) or even cannon ($2.3M) at any time. Such a restructure doesn't change the compensation for a player, nor does it change the length of contract. The player does get some of his money earlier. I don't remember a player ever refusing, although sometimes the team kicks in a couple of hundred thousand for the favor.

So, what’s the downside to this and why don’t they do it more often?

Less roster flexibility and more dead money down the road. Most contracts nowadays have language included that enables the Pats to unilaterally restructure contracts. So most of the time it is not even "a favor" anymore.

more dead money down the road
That’s what I had assumed. Odd that it didn’t seem to be mentioned in the post that I responded to. As a matter of fact, the insinuation seems to be that nothing changes in regards to how long the team is on the hook, etc.
