I don't know if they are as close as you think. At least not yet. Let's see Zappe face a good defense first. He may not because the Bears are not a good defense and Jones could be back.
I want Mac back for that one. A softer opponent to get his timing back. If he returns against a strong defense and looks bad, this board and all NE media outlets will melt.
One thing a lot of folks mention is that Zappe only looks better than Mac at times because the OL is playing better - but I kinda question that. Is the OL actually pass-blocking better, or is Zappe just moving in the pocket much better than Mac was? I feel like I saw at least 4 plays today that would’ve been sure sacks for Mac, where Zappe instead at minimum threw the ball away, and at least once completely evaded the rush by stepping up or to the side and completing a pass.

One such play borderline gave me goosebumps because he had a rusher barreling down at him from the blind side that he absolutely could not see and he just effortlessly stepped forward at the perfect time, as if he has that QB “sixth sense” where he can feel the rushers without seeing them. I honestly couldn’t believe it and that was the moment that made me really put one foot on the Zappe hype train.
In 3 games, I've yet to see Zappe bring the ball down in front of his crotch and square his shoulders to the sidelines. He seems to glide in the pocket with his left shoulder always upfield, and with the ball always ready to be thrown.

I'm still big on Mac but this Zappe kid is making himself difficult to ignore or brush off.

Yup, I know exactly the play you’re talking about, Garrett was coming in off the blind side and Zappe just calmly stepped up right at that moment without even seeing him and completed the pass a moment later. Thought the same thing.

I hate saying this because it’s not a Brady / Bledsoe situation, but it was amazing how the OL was terrible under Bledsoe and then immediately played well under Brady. Mac‘s problems are different than Bledsoe’s were, who just stood there like a statue; Mac just seems to get a bit jittery and moves in exactly the wrong direction. Doesn’t happen all the time, but enough that it’s noticeable. The OL has definitely improved, no doubt, but I think Zappe has been making them look a little better than they are, versus Mac who didn’t.

I look forward to it playing out, and at the very least having not one but two young, inexpensive players able to lead an NFL teams. I also hope we can convert one to the 1st and (other 2nd day pick) that would make it a win-win for the other guy too. After all, they're both proven now.

hey how many Belichick-drafted QBs stating NFL games counts as saturation? I count 4 this weekend (JG, Brissett, Zappe, Brady). Seems like there's potential to hit 5 at some point soon...

I didn’t see this earlier, I found these answers from Bill interesting (from Kyed):

You said that. It's irrelevant. Always has been.
Nope

BB did not like Bledsoe. He was the 100 million dollar QB who backed up Brady.

Mac will not back up Zappe. BB is not going throw in the towel on his prize QB just like that. Harry stuck around NE for 3 years doing who knows what. The Pats will go back to the Mac.

Its typical BB answering a question with more questions.

Need a much larger sample. I felt like Mac was the only one that came to play in Buffalo last year. He was really fiery in that game. So many variables.
I agree but i can't get away from just how composed Zappe looks which isn't something i have ever thought about Mac.

BB wants MAC to feel pressure to excel. He believes that everyone should have to compete for their job to bring out the best. I suspect BB may have believed that Mac was getting a little too comfortable and not feeling pressure to perform in a results oriented business. Having Zappe put pressure on MAC can only be a good thing. Let's see if this drives MAC to improve his performance.

Johnny U

Johnny Z

Joking of course, but so far JZ looks like a promising NE QB. He has already outlasted Jimmy Baby.

Does Mac get an opportunity to win back or alternatively justify the loss of his job? That’s the big question atm.

It's only 1 game, but Zappe played very, very well today. IMO if he plays this well next week he is the starting QB. And he should be- because if he does it, he earned it.
