There were a few plays where Cooks beat his man with a double move, but brady was keyed in on Gronk or Amendola and simply didn't look cooks way

Cook caught a 54 yard throw, he had 88 yards receiving..had 2 DPIs including a key one in third quarter in the end zone that set up go ahead TD
I will agree with you that Cooks was obviously our best WR, especially when Amendola went down, but Brady was chucking a lot of balls up there out of desperation, too, so I can't really get behind the idea that Cooks necessarily looked great.

He made a nice grab on the long ball and showed his speed on the 15 yd crossing route. He's certainly got the ability to draw coverage. Let's just hope Tom doesn't start forcing it like he did Moss, because there aren't a lot of viable WR options at the moment. Losing Edelman, Mitchell, and Amendola have certainly changed things quite a bit.

While he's a great weapon with lots of potential, I think a lot of people just assumed that Cooks would immediately step in and have a flawless rapport with Brady. I don't think we'll see that for awhile.

I think a moment of thinking is in order, We really love the NE fans in NO because they are so gracious in defeat and so giving and smart, You know your football and taught us how to lose and win on one day in 2009, we adore you in NO.
Your team are champions but your fans are the same., and there's a pretty good chance we might lose this one.
I have a house in Virginia on a lake and would love to host any NE fans that want to make the trip. Just message me and I'll give you directions, pick you up at the airport and a room, no problem, I can't make it to NO this time, because of Government job meetings I have to be at. But I do know the fans of NO will greet you well so go to NO, or anyone who want to fish, bring their kids to my house in Virginia, it's fine and we can have fun. We and NE are brothers.

You are fun and brilliant fans and taught us a lot, your team is not the only champions. You help a lot of fans by the way NE fans set an example to act.

I thought it was one DPI and 2 defensive holding calls.
I thought it was one of each, but I'm not the best when it comes to remembering stressful situations. My mind starts to get distracted and I can't pay attention as closely as I normally do. What I need is a good old fashioned drinking habit, at least as it pertains to the games.

The QB3 trade to the Colts will start paying dividends next week. In the meantime, BB needs to figure out who can win in the slot/quick route areas, and he may have to look to RB for that answer.

Pretty bummed I spent superbowl ticket money for that as my first Pats home game

I'm thrilled with the Patriot place, and pregame experience

Everything I could have hoped for and more. But man the Pats looked like ass. Offense was legit for the first few drives, but nothing more ever really materialized and the defense was outmatched for most of the game

I couldn't believe I watched Alex Smith play the game of his life at Gillette

I think we should settle down on this kind of talk. Cooks and Brady have lots of work to do in order to get into the kind of rhythm that we're used to seeing. As I've said, part of Cooks' strength is wasted due to the loss of a viable slot receiver.

Cooks appeared to be double covered with safety help, so I'm not sure that he was always open last night, as you're suggesting. Pretty sure Tom, Josh, or Bill would've picked up on that. Also, exactly how many of these "quite a few DPI flags" did Cooks draw? Just curious.

I can't wait to watch the all 22 to see the game from a different angle.

But I think, and I'm just throwing this out there, they need to force defensive coverage away from either Hogan or Cooks instead of the other way around. If they were putting their #1 CB on Hogan and double covering Cooks they have to find a guy that can beat a #3 CB. Maybe they'll get more work from Burkhead or Lewis in that area.

Anyways just open thoughts. Once gamepass is open I'll post some screenshots to further the discussion.

The Defense is a whole other animal. I don't even know where to start with that.

Problem is people here were already saying use a RB in the slot once Edelman went down. You'd think that would have been a point of emphasis or they flat out don't have one that can work that way. Gotta be some smart, good slot, guy on some team somewhere that is being underutilized.

They played passive and when they didn't, they made plays. Giving up newely 10 yards per play is ridiculous. It's almost like they feared the KC speed and while normally the bend but don't break works, they broke tonight.

Also, I didn't like seeing DMac in coverage on Kelce or the TE's. I don't know why Chung wasn't stapled to Kelce all night long. I wonder if those long plays may have been prevented if DMac was playing high safety.

I think Lewis can create separation in that role. Burkhead possibly could but I haven't seen enough on him.

Main point being that if they can work a guy into that role the offense should be just fine.

And hopefully they'll score enough points to keep Patriotspy or whatever his name is from posting "40 year old weak armed" bull ****. haha

I think this team might have had too much smoke blown up its ass the past seventh months.

What they did last year was legendary and people are still talking about it. I've been watching a lot of NFL Network the past few days and reading other football websites and this team has been hyped more than any other Patriots team I can remember.

I wonder how much of that gets through to the players. Belichick usually keeps them humble but they still might be reading their own headlines. Also some of the new guys had some problems today, maybe they all thought they could just step in to the system and suddenly be Patriot-level. Hopefully they learned that's not the case. As BB said in the pregame clip where he visited his old high school, you have to earn it.

This team has to earn it all over again. 2016 is over and they just learned that the hard way. Hopefully they are quick learners.

Yea, while it's obviously not the reason for the loss, I thought all the pre-game highlights of SB 51 were so unnecessary, not to mention showing the 28-3 score throughout the stadium.

I'm also not a fan of having them wear those Super Bowl LI Champions patches when a bunch of the guys out there weren't even on that team.

The only time Peters was more than 1 yard separated from Hogan was when Hogan was in the huddle.

Peters is an elite corner, so that doesn't worry me so much. What does worry me is that we basically have 2.5 capable WRs. That was what killed us tonight: when the Chiefs put their best guys on Gronk and Hogan, we couldn't beat them anywhere else. Cooks did okay, so he can reasonably get a pass, but everyone else was nonthreatening. White and Lewis were mostly absent from the passing game, Burkhead had one nice play off the top of my head but little else. Where was Dwayne Allen? On the first play from scrimmage he was wide open and Brady missed him, then I think he got one target the rest of the game.

This is exactly the kind of game and role that I figured Malcolm Mitchell would thrive in, which is what makes losing him such a gut punch. Last year, he semi-consistently punished teams that overloaded on the other guys. Maybe Dorsett turns into that guy once he's more comfortable in the offense. Hard to say, and I'm certainly hoping for it, but in the mean time we may be in trouble if the defense doesn't shape up and we find ourselves needing to score 30+ to beat anyone.

That's a good question. I saw that a couple of times. I'll look for that too.

Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback in human history... but Father Time always wins.

Father Time will win eventually, but not now. There was no physical issue with Tom; the problem is, he's not yet comfortable with his new receiving corps and the glaring absence of the receiver he's always had the best rapport with. Tom has never needed the best athletes to win, but he HAS always needed sufficient time to study them before he fully trusts and commits to them.

Just saw this posted on a Dolphins forum: "Ahh. The Patriots will never know what 17-0 feels like".

We went 18-0 at one point. Smh. I hope this team punches the haters in the mouth. Give me 13-3 and HFA.

I think that is going to be quite the challenge in such a short period of time, but I certainly hope that you're correct. Perhaps he can help dictate coverage and open up certain areas for others.

Jeez, you must really like pain to be going on opposing team's messageboards, let alone a divisional rival.

I'm not a fan of the whole opening night atmosphere, and I doubt Belichick is, either. He grumbled about how the "circus would be in town" for the 2003 or 2004 opener and didn't seem too happy about it. At least we didn't look like fools wearing red clown noses. That would've sucked ass.
