Official 2022 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

Heard last night #Bucs QB Tom Brady will start the game but don’t be late if you plan to watch. He’s only supposed to go one series, best case scenario. Only change to that may be a three and out, but he won’t be in the game very long.

Let's see how the Bucs Oline holds up today. Line play is what you really look at during pre season. Tom and the receivers should be fine

I am really really surprised they haven’t moved to squire a league proven guard. Losing Jensen at center sucks but they had their in house successor drafted a year ago who they apparently love so fine. But the guard depth is scary.

So, how does it all shake out? From left to right: Smith, Goedeke, Hainsey, Mason and Wirfs. Leverett will back up at center and guard. Josh Wells can play either tackle position, and Walton, the former Seminole High School star, can swing between guard and tackle.

The loss of Jensen was a big one, no doubt. But the Bucs had planned for it long before Brady returned.

Why Bucs aren’t worried about their offensive line

From the same article:

Brady was gone from camp for personal reasons for 11 days, but in reality he missed about three practices.

Since he wasn’t going to play in the Dolphins or Titans games, he would not have participated in the walk-throughs the Fridays before those games.

You also have to factor in a natural day or two off for veteran maintenance.

What Brady missed was one joint practice with the Dolphins and two with the Titans.

In the meantime, he had built up some chemistry during the two-week install period of training camp with players such as wide receiver Julio Jones and tight end Kyle Rudolph.

They drafted Goedeke in the second round (first guard drafted after Strange, if I recall), traded for Mason, and have Hainsey from last year (as a tackle to center conversion). That gives them:

LT = same
LG = step down (though how much, and how much can the gap close, is what we'll see over the course of the season)
C = step down (But could it still be that Hainsey is a better pass blocker than Jensen? We'll find that out, too)
RG = step up
RT = same, but Wirfs should still be improving

So, they might be ok. I wouldn't be surprised if they take a look at some veterans, bother interior OL and tackles, and it's too bad that there seems to be no chance of a Marpet return, but it seems as if the Mason trade makes the starters at least sort of a lateral move from last year, and a possible upgrade by the end of the season, as Cappa was the weakest link in the OL last year, IMO.

Godwin isn’t playing tonight. Making good progress but not ready to play yet.

Yeah but Godwin plays to Brady strengths more.

The Oline looked fine Tom still has zip in his arm

Line should be fine still got elite talent there the only question mark was guard but who knows if Stinnie was gonna start.

JULIO

Bucs players not expected to play tonight, via @ScottSBucs : Chris Godwin, Russell Gage, Tristan Wirfs, Gio Bernard, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Keanu Neal, Logan Ryan, Zyon McCollum. Only eight held out tonight, after 33 and 25 in first two preseason games.

With Tristan Wirfs (oblique) held out tonight, Bucs have Josh Wells working as the starting right tackle.

Bucs open with three-WR look with Evans, Jones and Johnson, Brate at tight end, Fournette at running back.

Starting line tonight for Bucs, as expected, is (l-r) Donovan Smith, Luke Goedeke, Robert Hainsey, Shaq Mason and Josh Wells (Wirfs held out)

Worth noting that rookie linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi was on the field for opening kickoff return and kickoff coverage unit tonight.

Touchback on opening kick. Rookie safety Nolan Turner also on both special-teas units so far.

Bucs had Sean Murphy-Bunting starting at outside corner opposite Carlton Davis. Opened in nickel with Nolan Turner as one of the starting safeties.
