This has an opening post with good commentary and information, which we definitely recommend reading.

i liked that when he decided to actually run the ball, he ran the ball........but he def looked to move around in the pocket, stay behind the line, and still make the throws......this is something a lot of the pure "running QBs" don't do, they feel a little pressure and they get their rabbitt on......Maye didn't do this; when he felt the run was the best option, he tended to get north & south and made some good gains; but he looked to extend the play and make the throw first, and this was encouraging
First year at UNC, almost never did that, ran without looking up, ran after not seeing 1st or 2nd reads open.
He Made a concerted effort in off-season to get better at looking while scrambling and was so much better at it his second year. There was an interview with his coach or him at one point mentioning how he had set that as a goal to improve on going into year 2.
This is one of the things I point to when people say he regressed in year 2 because of stats.

You lost me there. Does that mean you didn't like him?
LOL. Now you lost me. I thought Maye was great. Felger and Mazz I can do without, and I rarely listen to them. It's all too easy to guess what they are going to say, so why bother to tune in? I think overall we have a really good set of journalists covering the team. Phil Perry, Callahan, Kyed, Tom E (however occasionally quirky and so on. I like Andy Hart. WEEI is a mixed bag. The new Jones/Keefe show is great, mostly because of Keefe but Jones is fine. Felger is just mailing it in these days, a lazy caricature of himself. Mazz is a bore. I love Zo as the color guy, but he pretty much mails it in on the radio show, which means we have to listen to Bertrand pretend to be a hardo. And so on.

Not at your post but at bedards opinion. You can't ask more from a rookie QB with an oline, running, defense in shambles .

He says he doesn’t grade on a curve. The other two just agreed. Stewart pushed back hard when they were talking about number of plus and minus plays.

Receivers Review

#1 Outside Receiver, where for art thou?!

Douglas-Best game of year, could have had a couple more catches if his number was called on a few plays. Seemed rejuvenated with Maye. Good YAC, good moves to get open, sneaky good at getting deep on scrambles, look for a scramble deep ball to DD in one of these games. Got a good inside receiver if this game is any indication.
Boutte-He was not open on the TD until the DB looked back for the ball and he got the separation. Speed is not his game, but he has good hands, it seems, and crafty at finding openings in the defense. Not going to be a #1 but good to see he maybe the #2 receiver in a good offense. Hope he can continue the positive play.
Polk-You got to catch the ball! He'd have 3 catches, same as Boutte without the drops. He was open less than Boutte but was open on some other plays when name not called. Him and Boutte are similar receivers except Boutte is showing better hands and better route savvy. Not giving up on Polk but as a WR you need to not drop the ball, unless you are Amari Cooper and then that is OK apparently. Disappointing but too early to give up on him.
Henry-As with every other game he plays like a good, solid veteran TE.
Hooper-Looks the part as a receiving TE but always seems to show as a better blocker than Receiver. Fine backup TE but not regularly separating or finding holes like Henry and did have the bad fumble, it happens.
Bourne-Meh, not seeing much from Bourne yet, seems a bit slow, looks big on the field, not sure if he's not 100% or just not part of the game plan much, underwhelmed. Will see if he gets better with more playing time. He needs to start showing more or you cut his 2025 salary and take 2.8 million dead cap vs 7.9 on the cap for a #4 receiver. You can add the $5 million to Higgins! Give him benefit of the doubt coming off injury, for now.
Baker-They need to see what Baker can do. DD can beat man coverage, so he will get doubled on third down by some team. Who else has shown they can regularly beat man, even in pre-season? Baker. I get the hands and attitude etc. but we are onto game 7, let's see where he is at.

Douglas, Boutte, Henry-3 guys showing as NFL players. Need to have Bourne, Polk or Baker to step up as the next guy. If not throw the bank at Tee Higgins.

A Good Tackle and another good receiver and I think we can have a very good offense. Think that's an off-season fix, unfortunately for this year, which is why I want to see Baker.

One added note, the Texans defense fastest defense I've seen Pats play, they can fly. Lots of speed on that defense. They were impressive with the team speed.

I gave up on all of them with all the Brady Belichick stuff. I listen to Zo and useless sometimes when exercising but most times they are annoying. Zo mails it in. I sometimes watch Bedard. I started to get interested in the new team and was energized by Drake. Starting to get that old feeling.

Drake Maye All-22 Review
I usually do the receivers and QB in the same post but there were so many more pass plays this week and really want to talk about Drake!
Will get the bad plays and couple of maybe not great plays out of the way.
-Interception, just an overthrow, when he misses it will be high, just how this type of thrower throws the ball, same as Herbert. Can work on some release mechanics in the off-season to minimize that more.
-Ball tipped on HH comeback route, no interference because tipped but Henry was held at top of route, delaying the comeback and the pass. Should have been a hold before the pass.
-He threw behind Hooper in a cross, maybe he was sitting Hooper down to not get crushed but think he just did no lead him properly. Was third down and was going to be hit as soon as caught so no different result than a punt but bad throw.
-Sack Fumble play. This is solely bad because he fumbles, he was on his 3rd or 4th read going from all the way right to all the way left and had a small window to Boutte on a comeback, hit as he tried to get it out.
-Had DD over the middle, clean pocket, led him just a bit too much. He had to lead him as CB was trailing and did not want him to undercut him but he led him too much.
-In 4th quarter had a throw to a rb out wide left about 10 yards and threw it too wide to be caught. Again, wanted to lead him away from the defender but was way too much.
-The pick on the batted swing pass. The Tackle is supposed to get the DE down, he gets him to put his hands down, but he recovers to get back vertical and deflect the pass. Seen this play go for picks the other way, don't love this play. It is designed for a quick throw so you want to line drive it, Maye could have adjusted to a more touch throw but would make receivers hold blocks longer than they want. When he started to throw looked like DE was going down, Maye should have given it more loft but honestly just a real good defensive play, happens.
-There was the throw a bit behind DD, and another a bit high. They got lots of yardage on these, yeah the crosser left some yards due to being behind him but if receiver gets 2 hands on the ball and positive yards not calling it bad, calling it could be better.

OK, LET'S GET TO THE GOOD!

-I found 1, yes 1 and only 1 bad read. He took a sack trying to move out of pocket when he had 2 receivers over middle open to dump to. Of course, there are always multiple decisions on some plays that would work and there were a few he had other options. For example, he had DD open on a crosser, threw the TD to Boutte instead. Time running out, wanted a shot play, first read, that's the right read and play and was a TD. The crosser was easier but now time is almost out, and you might have 1-2 plays max. Most QB's would take the crosser.
-I need to re-iterate the ability to go thru reads and see the field is already elite. I thought it was a very good talent that he possessed from college tape. I have not watched another QB on tape this year that was as high a success rate as Maye was in making the proper decision on who to throw to and when to run. It was impressive.
-Highlight some good to elite throws. First in 2nd quarter 1st and 10 at own 10, hits Boutte on an in-cut, from far hash, has a yard or 2 on DB but Maye just does a quick middle lookoff, then back to right and throws a bullet in perfect location.
-30 Seconds in half, TD drive, 2nd and 8 on own 18, first 2 reads covered, 3rd read middle covered, gets to 4th read all the way back on right, so scanned left to right, on far hash, getting hit, can't step into throw, hits DD, 22-yard gain with the YAC added. This is as Elite as you can get from a QB. Are there 10 QB's in the NFL that can make this play? Most absolutely could not and would not. 4 reads in 2.55 seconds once ball is in his hands. This play might be one of the best QB plays of the year by any QB. This ONE play tells you Drake Maye will be a top 5 QB in the NFL.
-He followed that with a good comeback throw to Polk that he dropped
-The TD bomb, he released it when Boutte was on the 28, caught when Boutte was on the 3, in stride. How many QB;'s make that play? The list is less than you think, Maye was the best college deep ball thrower I'd scouted in the last decade. That's an elite throw. To make that throw and the earlier play on the same drive is as good as it gets from a QB.
-Highlight 2 more great throws: First drive after DD crosser TD pass. This is the Boutte pass to the sidelines in between defenders. He had TE in the flat to same side, sees the zone defender CB move back towards Boutte, so pump fakes to TE, CB jumps up and he goes back to where CB would have been, drills pass from middle of hashes to Boutte 21 yards in the air, rapid release, my goodness it was a thing of beauty. A third absolute elite top 5 NFL talent QB play. Then last 4th down play of the game threw and out to DD, threw it on the break, the CB was underneath, but from far hash to sideline kept it out far enough where CB could not undercut. This throw is one only strong-arm QB's can make. This is a great tight window throw.

I think he was a little nervous to start but I think, Moreso, is he had a ton of adrenaline, overshooting a bit due to being a bit hyped. More calm in the second half.
One of the things that set Maye apart from Daniels and Williams on tape from college, and also today in the NFL, was you have many plays where you question the decision, where guys are open and they don't see them. I thought Maye was going to come in top 10 NFL in terms of processing, but he looks much better than that not having the horrible OC from UNC anymore.

I obvious loved Maye since he declared for the draft but I thought the tape of this game would show a mediocre performance. I was wrong. You can't get a sense of how elite some of his plays were until you watch tape. Should I worry about the picks, fumble and a couple missed throws? Since he did not do that regularly in college, I'll stick with not a long-term concern.

One interesting note: If you swapped the drop % in 2023 of Williams and Maye, Maye would have had 66.35% complete, Williams would have been at 64.97%. Yet Williams was talked about as extremely accurate and Maye as inaccurate, huh?

Excited for the future of the Pats! Just get him a healthy group of linemen and 1 more good receiver and we will put up 30 a game next year.

Will get to receivers in next Post. Polk probably not happy to hear that! LOL

I highly recommend watching this review also

This is a **** review. Maye sucks and he had 8 good decisions and 14 bad decisions. His foot work is horrible. Stop saying Maye did anything good. Get with the program.

What impressed me most with Boutte's catch was that he maintained his speed all the way to the catch point. He took that extra step in the end to get under the ball for an easier catch. Too many times in the past 5 years have we seen guys dive for that ball (Harry, Parker, Thornton, etc) and miss out on making a play while also getting hurt in the process.

Just wanna say how much I appreciate what you do here. And if Maye becomes a true bonafide stud, nobody has more right to tell any and all doubters to eat it.
It's easy to say a QB will bust, you'll end up being right 90% of the time. You on the other hand put your balls on the table and said he's a guaranteed sure thing from day 1. Just from your own college scouting. Amazing. I tip my hat to you.

Thx, appreciate it, I've always been into detailed analysis, worked as an accountant for my career and the fact I kind of go overboard on some of this analysis allowed me to retire at 51 due to my stock market skills.
I still have like a 5% chance of being wrong on Maye, but odds are heavily in my favor!
Honestly, I get more nervous when he's going to play now because I don't want to be wrong, not that I care if I am wrong for my own ego, nothing is 100% and no problem admitting I was wrong if the analyses changes, but finding a top QB is almost impossible and the idea of having another one after Brady makes me Kind of giddy with the idea we get 15 years of a top NFL QB. Just does not seem possible it could happen, but I think it's likely now.

Coming from a random lurker, your regular detailed analysis is filling a void that I've felt on the board since patfanken hasn't been regularly posting in a while. Great stuff - please keep it up

I vote no. Got to be stout up the middle first.

Understood; but you also have to find a way to have your best 5 OLmen on the field, especially for an inexperienced QB… And Dee/Trey Jacobs is in No way, shape or form one of our best 5.

It's a skill that Mac didn't have, for sure. In his first pro game, Maye looked completely comfortable moving around while looking downfield, and consistently made the right choice whether to run or pass.

Boutte has good lower body strength, he's solid. He bulled his way through all kinds of resistance with that last step. Very AJ Brown-ish.
