Having coaching staff at least mentally out the door to a college gig with recruiting, etc. does not help in the playoffs

This title is misleading. He's not staying with the Pats necessarily, just not leaving the Pats for Penn State.

And that is misleading also based on Schefter's tweet that says that O'Brien is still in the hunt for that job..

Pedigree counts. Schottenheimer hasn't dominated as a coordinator, but he hasn't had much to work with either.
I think the bad hires are the guys who dominate as coordinators with great players. I don't remember many of them turning out well, but I can name a ton who failed as HCs.

I could doing see that with a BOB who really does not have HC cred but why waste ANY time on Schotty? I wouldn't.
