And the 2nd 13 mill probably accelerates into the first year.So hypothetically, now the Pats sign Brady for 3/100, with $39m signing bonus, 1m 2020 salary, $30m 2021 and 2022 salaries. Cap charge is $14m in 2020. Brady’s elbow gets worse and he becomes noodle arm Manning in 2020. The team cuts him at the end of the season. They still have $13m cap charges in 2021 and in 2022 to deal with. You paid him 40m for one season.
Compare the results if instead you gave Brady 1 year, 40m guaranteed. In the former situation, the extra $26m in cap space is spent on other players in 2020. But most likely if Brady performs that poorly the $26m won’t result in an extra championship (Manning example himself notwithstanding). Now you’re stuck with $13m less cap the next two years for your team. In the latter situation, you still have no championship in 2020, but you have that extra $13m available the following 2 years.
