NFL Rumors: Tom Brady Won’t Take Hometown Discount To Stay With Patriots

So hypothetically, now the Pats sign Brady for 3/100, with $39m signing bonus, 1m 2020 salary, $30m 2021 and 2022 salaries. Cap charge is $14m in 2020. Brady’s elbow gets worse and he becomes noodle arm Manning in 2020. The team cuts him at the end of the season. They still have $13m cap charges in 2021 and in 2022 to deal with. You paid him 40m for one season.

Compare the results if instead you gave Brady 1 year, 40m guaranteed. In the former situation, the extra $26m in cap space is spent on other players in 2020. But most likely if Brady performs that poorly the $26m won’t result in an extra championship (Manning example himself notwithstanding). Now you’re stuck with $13m less cap the next two years for your team. In the latter situation, you still have no championship in 2020, but you have that extra $13m available the following 2 years.
And the 2nd 13 mill probably accelerates into the first year.

Exactly. But if it’s signing bonus you have to be a dlck and ask for it back. Why would brady even want to set up that situation?
No, you don't have to ask for it back. While a team is legally entitled to recover that money, they can just allow the player to keep it. I think in the case of Tom Brady, they'd let him keep it.

I'm not following. Explain? What if we got Brady and McCourty at a 4 year deal, big up front bonus etc, and the cap hit year1 and year2 are small. and If Brady retires in year3 or year4, is there a big cap hit in year 4? I didn't think so. Explain? Thanks !
Say you sign Brady to a 4 year contract worth a total of $120mil (AAV of $30mil), with $80mil guaranteed. One contract meeting those parameters would be one that pays him $1mil salary in 2020 and 2021 and $19mil salary in 2022 and 2023 and a $80mil signing bonus paid in 2020. I am not claiming this would be a wise contract for the Patriots to agree to.

That $80mil signing bonus will be amortized as $20mil/year. That makes the cap hits for each year:
2020: $1mil salary + $20mil amortized bonus = $21mil
2021: ditto, $21mil
2022: $19mil salary + $20mil amortized bonus = $39mil
2023: ditto, $39mil

If Brady retires/is cut after 2020, the 2021 cap hit will be $60mil (the amortized bonus for 2021, 2022, and 2023), with zero cap hit for 2022 and 2023
If Brady retires/is cut after 2021, the 2022 cap hit will be $40mil (the amortized bonus for 2022 and 2023), with zero cap hit for 2023
If Brady retires/is cut after 2022, the 2023 cap hit will be $20 mil (the amortized bonus for 2023), with zero cap hit for 2024

More former players think Brady is off to LA.

Which is why a large signing bonus makes less sense. It’s not a matter of the cash it’s the cap.
Example
3 yr 90 mill
If it’s 3 30 mill contracts if he retires after winning Sb 55 there is no hit for 2021
If it’s 40 mill Sb and salaries of 15,15,20 plating one year costs you 55 mill.

I think it’s gotten more liberal about being able to spread the dead money over 2 years now but I’m not clear on the details.

Yes, I understand how the cap works but I think the relationship between Brady and the Patriots is strong enough that we can safely assume all parties will act in good faith, whereas you are going out there assuming each side is trying to screw the other as much as possible. I don't believe Brady would take a 3 year deal with such a big signing bonus and then walk away after 1 year after winning the Super Bowl. He just wouldn't do that.

What former players? The mediots on ESPN? They don't know any more about any of this than any of us do.

Thanks so much.

OK. Was hoping retirement was treated differently than cutting someone. The cap hit is significant in the year after. So wait, did Gronk screw us a bit then by retiring, and we took a significant cap hit this past season?

Totally depends on the details of his contract and how many years were left on it when he retired. Anyone recall how long his contract was, what was left, and how much signing bonus & guaranteed money it had?

Edit: from googling, looks like there was a $2mil dead money hit.

No I am saying the opposite.
I am pointing out the drawbacks to such an approach as an indication of why it WONT happen.

It makes a lot of sense.

Marcellus Wiley and Tony Gonzalez are the latest.
Why would the greatest winner ever go to a franchise that can’t get out of its own way and start all over again with an organization that doesnt get it?
Because he has graceful WRs to lose with?

Let’s say it’s his choice to return to the Pats. After everything you’ve seen from him this season in terms of body language and his reaction to the young WR’s messing up, why would he want to return for another season with the same personnel? Are there any receivers that would be available for trade? And it’s not a guarantee that the Patriots would be able to get a bona fide WR for Brady to throw to. Brady is not going to return unless something changes first.

What is this assumption that it’s going to be the same personnel?

It’s going to be hard to trade for anybody unless you give up the first round pick.

Oh Jesus body language
The team that has won the division every season but 1 that he has played, has gone to the afccg 2 out of every 3 years, the Sb half the seasons, and won it 1/3 of the seasons is now a bumbling inept organization that he would want to abandon to go to a team that has won more than 9 games once in the last 10 years and hasnt sniffed a Sb in 25?

but just so we are clear, your belief is that after not getting a bye for the first time in 9 years, and losing in the WC round for the first time in 10 years and 2nd in 20, while having the best defense in the nfl, in a game where the opposing team blitzed one time and said take as long as you want because we know we can cover your receivers, is going to stand pat on offense and in the receiving corps?

Free agency, trade, draft picks, improvement by a rookie #1 pick who missed most of camp and half the season.
You do realize that teams address their weaknesses right?

by the way if Brady think the patriots blow and he would rather go to a loser franchise why did he point blank say he would like to come back?
