NFL Cancels Pro-Bowl

Get why it was cancelled, it's no big deal... Will say though, I want to go to see a pro bowl ... That and the canton game are the only two types of football games I haven't seen in person... Think it would be a fun Experience

I agree, they have tried different formats and different activities.. it is all part of the NFL marketing strategy. There has been a lot of "crap of that nature" in the past to try to generate interest..

Honestly, they need to just change it to a flag football game where guys can go have fun, not risk (less of a risk) getting hurt, etc. (the Robert Edwards incident notwithstanding). Have them get mic'd up and have it just be an fun interactive experience where maybe they also all get to walk around after it's over and sign some autographs.

I like the idea and maybe they can add some past HoFers to the game to have some more fun. Could probably even get some good advertising dollars by having the guys all where copperfit gloves and back supports .

Fans want to see a fun game where they can see some of their guys make some plays, hear them talk and it could even be a thing where coaches do some cool stuff with some trick plays and have it at least be entertaining. At least that way, star players won't avoid it to avoid injury and you'd have a chance to see some of the biggest names just out there having a good time. Fans will go if the players they want to see are there and it's a good experience. But it's not real football right now and it probably never will be, so it's time for the NFL to start coming up with a better way to at least make it an event people want to go to/watch.

I'm a different kind of sports fan. I'm a fan of the players' abilities and athleticism but I have no interest in hearing from them or getting an autograph. It's what happens on the field that counts to me.

Years ago my oldest confronted me on that and asked me if I'd want an autograph from Larry Bird. I told him no and if I ran into Bird I'd just want to shake his hand and thank him for his play as a member of the team I root for.

Many times, when I hear athletes speak, it turns me off. The best example of that is Kyree Irving, but there are plenty more.

In the late 80's, I took my wife to a Celtics game and we went early to experience the pregame shoot around up close. It was the year they had Artis Gilmore. He was standing under a basket doing an interview. We were about 20 feet away. She was amazed that a human being could be that big. I encouraged her to wander over and stand next to him, which she did, which made an even bigger impression. This is all it took to get her to watch Celtics games with me once in a while.

The NFL should have a traveling road show of football festivals where the stars come to a city for a long weekend, play a flag game, and create the rich fan contact you mention above. Things like win a lottery to try and cover your favorite WR, or you and a buddy try to complete a pass against your favorite DB. The players would benefit from building their marketing brand, especially those who have just become stars. They could make some paid appearances for their corporate sponsors while in each city. Support the local non profit causes, etc. Win/Win.

I hear ya'. On the other hand, having dinner with Jalen Brown, or Jabbar, or Rick Carlisle, would be pretty cool.

It was beach football. He was chasing down a pass thrown by Joe Theismann. IIRC, despite a stellar rookie season, he wasn’t even an actual pro-bowler that year, but was invited to participate in the other events.

He played again but was never more than a shell of what he had been before.
