NFL and NFLPA in talks to strip Goodell of discipline power

NFL, Players Association are closer to a deal stripping Roger Goodell of discipline power on.wsj.com/1UcmY4G via @WSJ

The NFLPA’s DeMaurice Smith is optimistic an agreement can be made; Sides have discussed using neutral arbitrators as hearing officers, sources say

No deal has been reached, significant obstacles remain, and any potential deal will not happen soon, people involved with the matter said. However, Smith said he remains optimistic about an agreement.

“We’ve been talking about changes to the personal conduct policy since October and have traded proposals,” said Smith, as he traveled to the Players Association’s annual meetings in Hawaii. “We looked at the league’s proposal for neutral arbitration. There is a common ground for us to get something done.”

Stop beating around the bush.... NO CONFIDENCE..... vote and be done with this fool.

the commish having diciplin control was never a problem before herr goodell.

Tyranny is never a "problem" until the tyrant does something wrong.

Indeed, when the word was first coined -- in ancient Greece -- it didn't have a bad connotation.

Still, experience has shown over the centuries that power tends to corrupt, and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.

Anyhow -- this raises the possibility that if Brady does lose this round of the appeal, there's a settlement that involves a rehearing before a truly neutral arbitrator.

The devil in such a deal would be what instructions the arbitrator would be given to govern his/her decision-making.

That's what confuses me. First, they can rule in favor of TB. Second, they can rule in favor of the NFL and remand it to Judge Berman. Or they can rule for the NFL without sending it to Berman which I don't understand because he has multiple other items he left to rule on.

In the end F Goodell. Painfully.

Had a lot of experience with the American Arbitration Association at one period of my life, prior to any proceeding before an arbitrator the parties are charged with framing the issue that they want answered.. and that question(s) is agreed upon by both sides.

yeah...I'll tell ya'...the only framing anything I want to see is a framing hammer embedded in this Goondell's skull.

Be a nice pats fan.. do not want the rest of the world to think poorly of us, oh wait a minute they already do..

Don't turn around, uh oh, Der Kommissar Godell's in town, uh oh..
Your in his eye and you'll know why the less you do the more Goodell will lie.

Seems like a no brainer for everyone involved. Would be a great bargaining chip for the NFL.

Exactly this. Getting rid of Goodell fixes the problem short term, and maybe even the intermediate term if the guy who replaces him is actually competent and fair. But what if he's another Goodell? Or what about the guy after him? Roger should go for many reasons, but the system needs to be fixed too or it's just going to happen again.

Wait...by even getting Goodell to talk about this haven't they just trapped him into agreeing he ISN'T a neutral arbiter like he claims to be?

Doesn't that help the PA in ongoing appeals the league have at all?

Of course it happens after Brady and the Patriots have been screwed one last time.

The changes being discussed only cover off the field violations. More smoke and mirrors by the NYJFL.

Got a little excited when I seen this post, I should have known they would keep their "screw over Brady and the Patriots plan" intact.
