Player Signing New Pats OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr

If he's a good run blocker and a so-so pass blocker, currently, he's good enough to be the starting RT. Mac will see any rushers coming from the right side much more easily, and Onwenu would be a help if he's the RG. If Onwenu is the starting RT then Wheatley is just good depth with long-term starter potential. Take over for Onwenu or Brown next year? Both tackles would be free agents in 2024 if Onwenu is the RT.
We'll see if he can unseat Sidy Sow, I don't think he will, but it's possible if he's good enough.

Based on his preseason tape, he's pretty good at both run and pass blocking.

This is a good depth move assuming he's not a mirage, the kid has played both left and right side.

Giving up on a 4th round RB after 1 year uggh. Let's hope this guy can contribute. It would not be a wasted pick.
RBs are a dime a dozen. Lots of talk this off season about how RB salaries are depressed should tell you that. OTs not like that, they’re scarce as hens teeth. Lots of teams in need of OT. That’s why this is a good trade, Pats have more RBs than they can keep and they traded one of the excess for a scarce OT prospect.

great move!

Yes. But my guess is LT. The move to RT occurred later.

Anderson all the sudden got a disease or something. I’m speculating Lyme. Who knows.

Then McDermott beat out Reiff…but still couldn’t pass block.

It turned into an “Oh, sh-t” moment.

Cuz Anderson can be LT and Trent Brown RT. That could be beautiful. And Sow is developed at OT for the year with Reiff ahead of him. But they quickly realize Reiff doesn’t have much left in the tank. About to turn 35. This ain’t rocket science, boys.
Reiff just got hurt

The trade means strong was gonna get cut. He didn't improve enough as a pass blocker, and NE must like Taylor and or Harris better.
And too many other RBs. They’re a dime a dozen these days.

Long expected and once again unnecessarily forced move. Instead of investing in OL on time . this is the third time in some four years they are trading for OL leftovers at the end of preseason giving away some useful capital.

Its balancing the depth move - from least important to most critical position - so of course its a good move.
It also has some upside for the future unlike Yassir Durant move.
Thanksdad 2.0 does look more promising but to expect this solves or significantly helps Pats OL issues now is just wishful thinking.

Anyone remember the little Italian joint run out of a house across the parling lot? Mama's home cooking!
I don't. There was a great italian rest. in Worcester named Tianos. Closed 20 years ago.

If the Pats are ever gonna be aggressive and move way up in the draft to get what they want like other teams do it’s a great time to do it and they can address a major need and not worry about it for years. See the 49ers three drafts ago!
FTFY

should we expect tackle eligible plays for Wheatley?

I noticed for most of the second quarter, Firkser was lining up beside Sow as an extra blocker at the edge.

Firkser was horrible blocking BTW. Maybe Wheatley can do this role better.

Deep OT class next draft with at least couple of blue chip prospects.
Thanks. But the same thing was said about this past draft class’s deep TE class. And Bill didn’t bite.

Aren’t Henry and Gesicki playing on the last year of their contract?

Firkser was horrible blocking BTW. Maybe Wheatley can do this role better.
He’s not got the size to be an in-line blocker. Sokol does. But Firkser as Captain Stone has written does everything else better.

Firkser is more of an H back like they probably imagined Dalton Keene was going to be, the Virginia Tech product we drafted in the third round in 2020.

Someone jumped on the diagnosis that DaBruinz, which he acknowledges is pure speculation, of a possible heart condition for Calvin Anderson.

This is not unreasonable as the anecdotes of heart-related maladies are becoming legion among seemingly healthy young people from the Covid jab.

If this proves to be true, a big if, Anderson might not be available for much if at all this season.

Clearly bringing in an athletic specimen like Wheatley with the appropriate length to play LT is absolutely essential.

Sidy Sow was brought in to be developed as a tackle, but this year as a rookie he needs to be essentially redshirted.*

And I think with McDermott not being unseated by Reiff at RT the staff realizes that Reiff is better suited as a guard or reserve tackle.

If McDermott or Reiff have to play LT, we may be screwed. If Stueber is there, I’ll be like that guy needing to sniff glue in the movie Airplane.

* Or at least that was probably the plan.
