I will stir the pot a pit

Cap increased is caused by revenues increase

what happens when the whole country, which is only real consumer of the sport, is in deflation?

Next year should be interesting
Nothing will happen since most of the NFL's revenues are already baked in.

Really?

That's cool. Also to be frank, deflation is not the word there. You guys are still in the opposite expectrum

This is why saying free agents will never come to New England is BS. Garrett wanted out of Cleveland. Cleveland may be one of the worst situations in the NFL and they are likely to never be a contender before Garrett retires or is cut because his value is not worth his contract as he gets older. He took the money to stay anyway.

Most NFL players look at this as a business. They want the rings, but they also want to be set up for life. Money talks.

$40M for a guy who turns 30 in December? $40M each or Garrett & Watson means that 27% of their cap is tied up in two players? That's about as dumb as you can get.

And how will Garrett entice any free agents to come to a team that has less than $10M in cap space?

They can have him for that much, It just makes it tougher for them financially.
I'm good with this.

They might come if NE offers above market deals
They have not done this

They have. And they will again. There are times they haven't. Other times they have. I am sure they will this free agency, but I am sure it won't be enough to make some (or a lot of) Pats fans happy. I expect them to get some top free agents this year and as soon as Monday.

What above market deals have they done in past 5 years?

The Watson trade and signing was dumb as dirt, no matter how you slice it.

But the Garrett signing is a different beast. While we don't know the details of this extension, we can safely guarantee Garrett's cap number is not going to be $40 million this year.

This deal isn't the horrible deal for the Browns people in here are making it out to be. People need to stop looking at real dollars and start looking at percentage of salary cap.

This is a 4 year extension, not a new deal. It takes him through 2030. The salary cap has been going up an average $24 million per year ever since the covid year. $300 million in 2026 is in the realm of possibility. The NFL is going to opt out of their current TV deals in 2029* and make an absolute fortune. The cap could be $400 million by the time this deal hits its final year.

* Hear me now and believe me later: Watching the NFL on TV in 2029 will look nothing like it does today. Enjoy it while ya go it.

Everyone just assumes the TV money will just keep going up at the rate it has over the past few seasons. I’m not so sure that’s a given.

Amazon paid billions for the rights to thursday night football, and apparently they are losing a lot of money to do so. They lost 1.6 billion alone in 2024. Amazon might be able to get away with that, but the other networks are forced to run a much tighter ship financially.

Why is that a problem? As long as the Browns obey the cap, what precisely is the problem here?

One can certainly argue the Browns are unwise in their spending but I mean from a structural standpoint. There’s nothing here that requires “fixing” the CBA.
A defensive player shouldn't make anywhere near QB money. Matt Stafford makes the same amount annually as him and Garrett is just below Josh Allen. It also has a ripple effect that many are overlooking where good teams won't be able to retain a good Edge player because they will want or exceed what Garret makes.

You're late to the conversation, but the real problem is mediocre players getting big contracts because "it's the market" are the reason it's gotten to the point where Garrett is getting $40M annually. Trey Flowers' contract started this nonsense in 2019.

Honestly until we have some good players this only benefits us, teams that need to manage cap on a relatively talented team will lose pieces, this is how the cap is meant to work. We might just see more balanced squads not retain Edge players for awhile until the market adjusts

The NFL is going to opt out of the current TV deals in 2029. And they ain't going to do it for less money.

Look at what NBA - a sport which is struggling - just got on their most recent deal. The NFL will increase proportionately, to the tune of billions of dollars.

It is getting out of hand, but how do you stop it?
You don’t, teams spend money for guys they want, and you hopefully draft smart and have guys on rookie contracts who can also play alongside them.

We’re so used to digging at the bottom of the bargain bin we’re not used to “overpaying”

When a non QB is making QB money, there’s clearly a problem the NFL needs to address.
There’s a salary cap, an easily manipulated salary cap but a salary cap. Every team needs to play by those rules:

You have to be very, very careful with the metrics because otherwise you might have players who are stat chasing at the expense of playing within the scheme. It’s a lot easier in the NBA where the rosters are a lot smaller and the stats tend to directly correspond to winning. The NFL is the ultimate team sport and many times it’s difficult to parse things apart.
This goes on in the NFL already. This is why WR's get pissed when they don't get the ball, RB gets carries vultured away from them. How many times have we seen a RB get their team all the way downfield only to have some backup come in and score the TD? That's potential money being taken away from the starter. Defensive players wants sacks and INT's.

You can't pay guys like Robert Hunt and Owenu the money they just received because "it's the market". They are not top OL and should be paid accordingly. Now when a good team has an elite OL, they are going to want to exceed that previous contract and that team may not be able to retain them because mediocre guys got overpaid.

That's your opinion, but that's not something that should be written into the CBA.

EDIT: This aged rather.... poorly.

Let's ignore the fact that you are comparing what QB's make today versus what Garrett will make 3 years from now....

If we go by average annual value of his extension, Myles Garrett is still behind 14 quarterbacks. At the end of last year, there were 14 other starting quarterbacks still on their rookie deals. So who are the veteran starting QBs making less money than Garrett? Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr? I can live with that even if, for some reason, it happens to bother you.
It also has a ripple effect that many are overlooking where good teams won't be able to retain a good Edge player because they will want or exceed what Garret makes.
This happens every single time some player sets a new record for most money. And it will continue to happen.

We get it. You think Garrett is overpaid. But you stated "there’s clearly a problem the NFL needs to address."

No. Just no. There is nothing the League can or should do to address anything that happened today with Garrett.
